Not really. If you never knew about MacRumors, you wouldn't are. Apple said iOS 4.2 will be released in November. We still have 19 days of November left. Its only November 11 (my birthday) The white iPhone 4 was suppose to ship in July, then delayed to the end of this year, then delayed to spring on 2011. If Apple releases iOS 4.2 on November 30, 2010, they would still be on time.

All very true and worth remembering. Happy Birthday, btw.

I think Apple delayed the release to give the jail breaking community a little more time to get the untethered jailbreak ready :)

Why didn't I see this coming, finally caved in & ran out this morning, purchased a 16 GB wifi 3Gs just because of iOS 4.2. Oh well, guess I'll have to wait and see.

I have gotten like 7 or 8 updates for apps today and all that has changed is support for 4.2......Could this rumor be false hopefully and apple is pushing out the app updates?!!?!

it is frustrating for this very reason, the jailbreaker teams will not release anything until apple does, just in case they make a last minute change. i couldn't care less about airprint, if that is in fact the hold up, i just want 4.2 cydia. i don't see why chpwn couldn't just release it as an update to work with redsn0w...

So does anyone know if this means that multitasking and picture background will come to iphone 3G?(even without A4 processor)

HUGE disappointment. I hope they got it wrong just this once, I want to unlock my phone on baseband 5.14 already :-/

It makes sense for Apple to wait a week for 4.2, the default setting for Macs to check for updates is once a week. That means at minimum a wait of 7 days will ensure that the vast majority has gotten the message about the update.

So basically iOS 4.2 and iTunes 10.1 will be released next Wednesday, the AppleTV update will follow 24-48 hours after that.

Sorry, that doesn't follow. The iOS update is based on plugging in your iOS device, not on Software Update.

Besides, if it was based on Software Update, from a server perspective, you'd rather have the people who are gung-ho and checking for the update every thirty seconds out of the way before the regular people start trying to download it.

Either way, your argument doesn't make sense.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

How bout giving us a unified iOS forum or sub-forum for iOS discussion MR.

You need both iTunes 10.1 and OSX 10.6.5 to fully utilise iOS4.2. So waiting a week after general release makes perfect sense to ensure a widespread number of machines will have been updated.

i would guess tomorrow

All of my apps just released updates for 4.2

that usually means an OS update is coming very soon.

I'm with you there. I'm picking mine up tomorrow. I haven't been following iPad stuff at all. Had no idea they weren't on the same iOS as my iP4. Oh, well. I'm still going to pick one up tomorrow. :D

Yes, but iTunes has it's own internal check for updates. If iTunes 10.1 came out tomorrow, along with iOS 4.2, when you launched iTunes to sync your iOS device you'd be informed. Further, at that point, if you clicked to update iTunes, it would launch Software Update, which, in turn, would inform you if you hadn't yet updated to OS X 10.6.5.

I still say that the delay doesn't necessarily follow from a software update argument.

I just hope the jailbreak is out the same day as the update. There's some apps that i need and the jailbreak is necessary. But im sure its been ready to go for a while now, just waiting for the official release

Eh, the 16th isn't so bad. When I heard iOS 4.2 was out "in November", I was thinking that is Apple speak for November 28th or so. The 16th would be a pleasant surprise.

It depends hw often then people sync their devices, my iPad is synced at most once a week, mostly as each backup takes so long I don't bother doing it more frequently (and just as slow).

This is annoying.

The iPad SHOULD have shipped with iOS 4.x. Since getting my iPhone 4, I've used my iPad less and less and less because of the lack of multi-tasking and non-working EQ.

And even though I have no use for them, the iPad should have debuted with dual cameras and "FaceTime". But Apple kept that for the iPhone 4 to drive its sales and for a second generation iPad, leaving those of us who bought the original iPad out in the cold without features that it should have had from the start.
