I plugged my phone back into the computer, launced iTunes and clicked sync, it didn't actually copy any new music over (as this isn't the computer that I sync with) and after that, clicking on my ipod app said "rebuiding database". after about 3 mintues my content showed on my iphone (3GS)

I'm having the same exact issue... What the heck Apple?! I can play all my songs on my iPhone through iTunes but on my phone itself, it says I have no content...

What a boring update for everyone who doesnt have an ipad... Anyone else not impressed by this mickey mouse update?

I hear you. I tested AirPrint (just for fun) but had to download an OS X App to make it work with my old printer. It does work, and I can see that it might be useful.

There are a few other minor improvements, and obviously bug-fixes and security fixes; although this is a useful update, it lacks 'WOW' factor :D

Lame

Not a single useful feature for my iPad in this overhyped update. What happened to orientation lock? How do I activate it now?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

As a whole 4.2.1 makes the phone feel a lot tighter than it previously did. The OS isn't displaying any lags at all anymore, before it would hang here and there but it wasn't that perceptable.

It feels like iOS is really starting to come together as a full fledged operative system with the same solid feel that OSX has when you're using it.

Initially my iPhone displayed 'no content' but then I pressed the sync button and everything reappeared without syncing.

There's even one app from when it was jailbroken still there.

Currently, the only videos that will play via AirPlay from my ip4 to my Apple TV are youtube and itunes video. For Safari video, or video from within apps, I can only get audio to play through aTV. Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone got any other video to play through AirPlay? Netflix will stream audio only, and Hulu Plus appears to be entirely non-airplay compatible.

Yea as i said in a slightly earlier post, you can only beam video that has been synced from itunes, from the photos app, or the youtube app. Making it useless for now. Why did they not implement it in safari? Seems to me to be the most useful place to put it. Reading the news....there is a embedded video.....beam it to TV....watch it....back to the ipad to finish reading the article....

AirPlay Does Not Support Camera Roll Videos

I was extremely excited about AirPlay that I gathered the entire family around the TV and turned on the AppleTV. I was about to show them how a video I just recorded on my iPhone could not be streamed live only to be met with disappointment.

AirPlay does not support iPhone 4 Camera Roll videos...seriously? I then tried AirVideo and it also doesn't support that. So I have to connect my iPhone 4 to my iMac, sync it to iTunes, then sync it back to my iPhone in order for it work? Wouldn't it then just be easier to play it from my computer thus ruining the entire purpose of AirPlay. C'mon Steve Jobs how could you overlook this.

C R A P update. Still HD video Stutters, Still subtitles don't work, still lots of metadata missing, still no folders on folders for movies and tv shows and freaking playlists. What the hell did this update do ? Airplay ? well thats a very over hyped feature.

Cant stream iphone4 movies to appletv via AirPlay. YouTube streaming works fine. Anyone experience with this?

If I start viewing on my phone and want to beam it back to my computer without having to load it from scratch on the Mac... Make sense?

Yes if the video is in itunes or the ipod app.

Have you actually done this yourself or are you just assuming it to be the case? With rentals you're dealing with DRM, so I'm curious if I have a rental on my iPhone if I can go over to a friend's house and stream that rental to their Apple TV.

To all the people who are having the no content problem in the iPod app, there are many posts above explaining how to fix this. Connect your iDevice to iTunes on your computer, then within the computer's iTunes (not the app on your phone), either play a song on the iPhone or add/delete a single song from it.

I called my wife in to show off and found the same thing. You can Airplay photos but not videos that you have taken with the iPhone itself. This makes no sense to me.

Seriously? Though I don't have an iPad, I do recall multi-tasking being a great addition to iPhone OS.

What happened to orientation lock? How do I activate it now?

Double-click the Home button to show the App switcher, then swipe left to bring up extra controls -- including screen orientation.

As far as I can decipher, the "big deal" was aligning all iDevices under the same iOS version.
Meh.

iPhone rocks even more now

This is mostly BS. It's true that Apple has added a few of the features that people jailbreak for, though it took them years after the release of the iPhone to do so. However there are still too many useful programs and extensions that are only available by jailbreaking to justify your snarky and condescending list. Here are a few good reasons for jailbreaking other than pirating software.

  1. FolderEnhancer: removes the 12 item limit of folders. For myself and a lot of others, the 12 item limit is completely lame, since it's very common to have more than 12 apps that you'd like to put in one category.
  2. SBSettings: gives you quick access to many settings and functions. Apple finally added a couple of these as of 4.2 -- brightness and rotation lock -- but there are still many other settings which it's useful to have quick access to.
  3. QuickScroll: Provides draggable scrollbars everywhere there is a list that can be scrolled. No more swiping multiple times to get through a long list where the developer didn't think to add scrollbars.

  1. I fully agree, i just cant be without SBSettings, i tend to turn on/off my BT/WLAN allot and having access to the fast switches is so nice.
I tend to buy all my appz but i just cant be without this simple app.

I have always missed the scrollbar since long pages are so damn annoying when you reload and you want to get far down so thanks allot for the tips on QuickScroll.

I see another great feature in 4.2 which is the search for text. I really miss this as well when browsing. iOS is getting better and better.

The last thing i would love to have is iTunes sync with iTunes, sadly the existing solutions have some limits and i would love to get this from Apple, here's one hoping we get it in the next patch :)

ps. iPhone simply is the best device i have ever owned even if it can be so much greater if Apple wast so strict with their term of use or regulations, anyway i just love my iPhone :D

Send him an email, and mention Safari and the remote app at the same time ;).

It only streams video sunced from itunes, the youtube app, or the photos app....nothing else works! Hoping app updates will change this otherwise im pissed.

On my iPhone 4 i have many new SMS tones, but on my girlfriends 3GS she just has the standard tones. Both updated to 4.2.1

Is this a new feature of the 3GS? Less tones than iPhone 4?

Speaking of which, is it still only possible to lock the screen in portrait orientation, even on the iPad using the new iOS version?

Find My Iphone setup

Anyone having trouble setting up Find My iPhone as per this?

I get to the point where I enter my Apple ID and password and it says "User name or password is incorrect". Typed it correctly a whole bunch of times and no go. Weird.

EDIT: Jeez, as soon as I post this it worked fine on the eleventh try.
