iOS 4.2 Now Available

Airplay

If you have an Airport Express or AtV then Airplay is excellent.

I have an Airport Express and so far i have been able to stream from my ip4 directly to it using internet radio apps, you tube, ipod, podcasts. Next step is to buy an Apple TV and link up to music system and tv in living room and then move the airport express to the kitchen where i already have an internet radio plugged into some speakers. Airplay is a huge addition.

Not at all. The orientation switch is a major point for me. I value the hardware switch more than folders (confusing, I just forget whether everything is on my iPod touch), a unified mailbox (nice but I can manage without) and fake multitasking.

Is 4.2 containing a new baseband for iphone 4 ? If yes, what is it ?

I use the Audio version of Airplay all the time now - streaming Spotify content to my music system is awesome :)
 
Tones, I emailed apple..

I have the 3GS, the iphone 4 is a little out of my price range at the moment, I didn't get new tones with my phone when I updated it.

So I emailed apple saying that it wasn't right to start treating older iphone users like they are obsolete in something as simple as new text messaging tones. The iphone 4 already does so much more than mine and I do want to get it when I can but for them to not at least give us new tones but still give us the option to assign a tone to a specific contact is ridiculous. I have a hundred numbers in my phone, as most of us do, so how fun is it to only get to spread 6 tones to a hundred contacts?

Any situation where you have video which you just want on the big screen with zero hassle. Easier to just "flick" the video onto the screen rather than "ok, I've got it on my iP*, now either everyone huddle around the little screen or give me a few minutes while I try getting it on my ATV..."

Likewise for taking stuff to someone else's TV (their home, conference room, etc.): just take the ATV, plug it in, play from iP*. Maybe not that much different, but easier to take a phone & "puck" & 2 cables instead of bigger adapters/power-supplies/laptop/etc. (Still waiting for direct iPad-to-HDMI cable though, along with iPad-to-VGA/composite/component which works regardless of app.)
 
Find My iPhone Down?

I'm a paying MobileMe user that just updated to 4.2.1.
When I attempt to log into my Find My iPhone page, it just refreshes the same "please re-enter your password" page, as opposed to finding my iPhone.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Residual of Apple's servers getting ravaged?
 
Just finished updating 2 apple tvs, 2 iphone3gs, 2 ipod touches and an ipad. lost ipod content on one of the iphones but just re-synced and it reappeared without any problem.

Initial impression is: Airplay will change how we do things around the house and will save us money on electricity... (using iphone/ipod with apple tv for music instead of running the apple tv, receiver, and 58inch (energy sucker) plasma while running on the treadmill)

Are you talking about a movie rentals? If so, after running into this issue in the past, I try to avoid renting movies on my iPhone or iPad. If you do, it is stuck on that device. If you rent it on your computer first, you can move it around however you want and it only takes a few minutes to do so. It will also usually download much faster on your computer.

If you're talking about other content you own, isn't this content already on your Mac? Either way, I can't imagine this is a common scenario for most people, and again, I don't think this was ever touted as a capability of Airplay.

Can someone confirm if you can stream movie rentals from a device to an Apple TV over Airplay?

Can you use airplay and stream pandora? We use remote app to play whole home via iTunes, can this now be done w/ apps like pandora?

Yep. Sitting on the couch, browsing the 'net on my iPad. I come across a video I want my girlfriend to check out. Couple of clicks and it's up on my TV. That's one reason AirPlay is cool.
 
What a boring update for everyone who doesnt have an ipad. They included some of the most annoying text tones known to man and never updated the ringtones. I just want an little click as a text tone not a "Hey **** look at me! My phone is receiving a text!"

Apple should really think update there dictionary to include peoples own words too. fed up with the iPhone changing my words to what it thinks knows best. If I want to swear then Im a big boy I can decide to swear I dont need SJ programming his phones to stop people doing it.

Anyone else not impressed by this mickey mouse update?

Issue with multitasking is it's such a broad term few people realize what they're asking for ... or insulting.

It's not "fake" multitasking when you understand what the app really needs to function as a well-behaved participant, rather than the "any cycles you can grab" free-for-all which most "multitasking" is.
 
Disappointed with airplay

For now im really disappointed with airplay. Yes im able to get the audio to stream over from my iphone/ipad from any app (pandora, wunder radio etc.) But The only thing i can get the video to stream over from is the stock video app on the ipad and the dedicated youtube app. All other apps, tedtalks, PBS, hulu plus, netflix etc, ONLY STREAMS THE AUDIO.

So then I got to thinking maybe the apps will require updates. But then i tried streaming videos from various websites using safari which seems really useful, and again it only streams audio. DID THEY NOT BUILD THIS INTO SAFARI? If youtube, stock videos synced from itunes, and photos are the only things it lets you beam to your TV, the video aspect of airplay is USELESS. Guess we'll have to wait and see if they let developers use this.

I received the verification email after about 20 min, verified it, and on my iPhone4, it still says that my MobileMe account is not verfied. Overloaded servers perhaps?
