AirPlay, AirPrint, Folders, Multitasking???

Upgraded here in Canada to 4.2.1 on iPad & iPhone 3G

Received Game Center, Mail merge on iPad, already existed on iPhone previous OS

No sign of AirPrint, AirPlay, Multitasking, Folders.

Anyone having similar issues?

Same here.

Seems I just killed both my iPad and iPhone..

Sorry to hear it. :(

Do not be a guinea pig for Apple's oft-lame QA. In the future, let fanboy lemmings go off the cliff first.

How long does it take to check the comments here before taking the plunge? 5 seconds?

I am in Canada as-well, yet I have all the features. Even though I have Airprint, my printer is completely useless to the iPad, which is very dissapointing,

After a few restarts of the update I got it to download in 7 minutes here in Japan.

Btw, where do I click to do text searches in Safari web pages? I thought this was supposed to be new in 4.2?

No problems for the five devices I updated. And if you count the folks having problems that graciously reported them to this forum compared to the number of upgrades today then you'll agree things are going well. You should turn the FUD down from 11.

When inside the browser, you know where you enter quick google searches? Kinda like a spotlight search? Enter the word in there and there will be an option at the bottom of the search to search the web pages.

Note to self

Got a new voice memos app in the utilities folder on iPhone 4 update. Everything works flawlessly just as before only a tad faster. :apple:TV had to power cycle after the update to get settings back.

iPad owners seem to be slowing down as expected with only 256MB RAM. Got out of mine in anticipation of the coming slowness. Waiting patiently for next gen iPad.

The smart money wins again with IOS 4.2.

Actually, my iPad hasn't had any delays at all. I would think it would be slower, but it's fast if anything. Maybe my iPad is truely magical :)

Thanks.

It's not new. It's only the blue icon that's new. It replaced the red microphone icon. This update is frikkin' awesome!

The new iPhone Search is wicked!! I bought Latitudie a while ago and it worked well, but it was much more involved to use it than Apple's own service PLUS it wasn't transparent. Apple's service is SO much better and native for us Apple users. Awesome.

Hopefully we'll get free MobileMe soon.

That icon for the voice memos app looks horrible now. Not that I ever used the memo app, I think it looks very generic and almost like a place holder or something. Not what I would expect as a replacement.

Don't understand it but whatever.

Oh, still not custom SMS tones. Yet again. The "new" ones are a joke. I sure as crap don't want to listen to those every time I get a new txt. Talk about annoying! Who comes up with this junk? Hire me - I will give the people what they REALLY WANT!

Especially considering Android is the Windows of the phone world. I was saying that long before Woz, by the way.

And before you say that Windows is the Windows of the phone world -- I'm talking about marketshare as it relates to quality.

Windows 7 mobile can suck without marketshare, but Android will end up sucking as a RESULT of its marketshare.

Don't get me wrong, if Apple had 90% marketshare in the PC market, Mac OS would suck, too.

Have you actually used a Windows 7 phone?

Ok, so I double tap and it brings up the apps running (kinda like Task Finder in Windows)....fine. But if I swipe to the left it brings up the iPod app and the volume controls. What the hell? What's the point? Why just have that one app when you do one action. I don't get it, it's not intuitive (so do the volume controls just work for the iPod app or for other apps?), and it's HORRIBLE interface design.

Someone please enlighten me as to what the point of this 'screen' is.

Its so you can quickly get to your music controls from anywhere, and while within other apps. It's not limited to the iPod music app, if you are running Pandora for example, the Pandora icon would appear instead of the ipod one, so it actually changes depending on which audio app you are currently running.

The featuresyou mention aren't enabled for the iPhone 3G.

How is that confusing? The answer is: no, it isn't.

^^^^^ I'm glad they changed it to match the iPhone's OS. I'd rather have a mute toggle. How hard is it to find the orientation lock icon?

Don't worry, you'll get used to it.

You could always wait until the entire world isn't downloading it at the same time......

/just sayin'

Well how hard is it to hold the volume down button for an extra second to mute the device? Just sayin..

The mute switch don't make much sense on the iPad, the rotation switch helped a lot when watching movies or using certain apps.
Atleast a setting to change the function would have been nice.

you gotta update to the newest itunes before updating the iPhone.... may be annoying for people who have capped internet :(

Not only that. fter having upgraded the family iMac to iTunes 10 i seriously would not want to do that with my personal computer, as for me personally iTunes 9=>10 was a big step in the bad direction.

I read somewhere (can't remember and a quick google doesn't help) Apple was disappointed by the adoption speed of iTunes 10 (after the launch surge). I guess this is their attempt at forcing adoption.

We'll see how long I hold out.

EDIT:
I remember there wer rumors of iOS4.2 possibly bringing speed improvements, especially to users of older iPhones 2G and 3G. Can anyone verify this? I'm asking because my old iPhone 3G was inherited by my wife (I had to wipe it and install iOS 4.1) and she's complaining about it's sluggishness (I can verify it's slower then when I was running iOS 3.1.3 on it).

Ipad Screen lock orientation dislike

Just dislike one thing the orientation button is now the mute button.
It was faster easier to lock your screen. I don't think we need the mute you can just hold the vol down and it's muted not like This is a phone and you need to but it on mute. Apple if you read this make the lock button the way it was. Thanks

I know right just hold it down nope they bring it back on next update

Some nice features in the calendar app too, invites is handy and now being able to change the calendar for an appointment directly is so helpful. And birthday cLendar syncs now too!! :D

I surely did that..:)

But, you know, when it comes to something so eagerly anticipated as this update (I was craving for multitasking and folders on the iPad) jumping straight away could not be helped, so I thought :Nah, cant't be SO bad......and took the plunge...:D

The result-it took me almost all night to sort the things out-the downloads for both iPad and iPhone went OK albeit sloooooow but when it came to extracting the update, this was where the fun begun-I kept getting all kind a messages from "Could not connect to Apple server" to "Please reinstall iTunes"...jeeez..

Both devices went to recovery and iTunes would not even recognize them when i tried to plug them in.
I restarted the PC, connected again the iPad and made a recovery from the backups.
Interestingly, when this recovery was complete (abt 2 hours later) the 4.2.1 was installed..:)

Same procedure for the iPhone and now seems all is up and runing, even figured out how to get the FaceTime back-switched it off a couple of times, then back on, and on the 4th or 5th attempt it was on..:D

Will do my best to keep myself from trying to update next time when the whole world and its mother is doing the same thing...

I posted this in the other 4.2 thread, but since this is the bigger one and the same question is being asked, thought it was probably a good idea to post here too in case it is indeed correct:

For all those people who are can't find how to Airplay video shot with the iPhone to the ATV, here is an excerpt from a review posted by TiPB.com, linked to from daringfireball.net a few weeks ago:

"What is surprising, however, is that there’s no AirPlay button in the Photo app when it’s playing movies. Since quickly recording a home movie and beaming it to our TV is one of the features we love most, that’s a bit of an annoyance. However, you can double click the Home Button and double swipe left to get to the second widget bar, then hit the AirPlay button there. A hassle but hopefully a workable one."

Original link: http://www.tipb.com/2010/11/07/ios-4...h-walkthrough/

Hopefully this feature is still available in the 4.2 release and this is therefore a useful second post.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to work, all the second widget bar gives you is volume controllers for attached airplay devices, no option to select a destination to watch your filmreel movies.

My iPhone took 10 mins from plugging in the usb lead to unplugging it again after it had updated.

My wife's iPad, on the other hand, was a nightmare. Installation stalled, so I had to restore the iPad, the restore process stalled and I had to hard reset the iPad 5 or so times before it came back to life. Then not everything synced across properly.
