It works the same way as on the iPhone. The sounds of new mails and push messages didn't play and also in games there is no sound if you activated the mute switch. But there is still sound when you listen to music or watch a video.

I think a mute switch only make sense, if there is facetime available on the iPad.

And there it is. Now it makes sense.

Honestly though with that sort of implementation I find the switch to be completely useless and stupid.

Now I'd like the orientation button back after realizing this. :(

I know the description said that AirPrint will work over a printer shared on a wireless network - but only recently did it say that it needed a mac on osx 10.x.x (whatever the new release is)

Is anyone able to confirm that it WILL NOT work on a PC sharing a printer?

It won't work on one today.

I expect a future update to Bonjour will bring the function to the PC world.

Yes. You can google something like "ios 4.2 ipad udid registration." Then look for a developer who seems reputable and is asking no more than $10 (I saw one for $6) and who accepts the money via paypal. You send the dev your UDID and your payment, they add you to their developer account (each dev is allowed up to 100 iDevices, I believe). Then they'll usually provide you a way to download the 4.2 software and instructions.

However, it is super easy. Sync your iPad fist, which you can do as 4.2 is downloading. Then once it has downloaded you alt+click restore and this allows you to choose the file from which you are restoring. Select the 4.2 software and then iTunes will verify your UDID with Apple (this is why you need to pay a dev to add you to their account and not just torrent a copy).

Once 4.2 has installed then just restore from the backup you made or set it up as a new iPad, whichever. Tada, it's that simple.

Hi Chris,

Took your advice and found one for $6. Just received notification that I'm good to go. However, the instructions say "Set it up as a new iPad. DO NOT restore from back Jo!". I'm confused. If I don't restore from back up will I not lose everything? I'm worried that if I try to restore I will mess things up.

Anyone?

Thanks so much!

After you restore, you'll have the option to restore from backup on 4.2. That's what I did.

I restored from a 3.2.2 backup I made 30 minutes before updating the firmware and my iPad works fine -- all of my files, data, gamesaves are still there. Generally it's a good idea on betas to do a new one, but since this is my only iPad, i have to use it for work as well as test on it. I needed my restore file :)

It's definitely a solid build. I had some wifi issues like not being able to scan for hidden wifi networks, but all other issues so far have been because the app isn't properly updated. I really appreciate being a developer right now. :)

multi-tasking controls

I don't have iOS4.2, and I'm wondering about the multi-tasking controls, namely double clicking the home button to select from the various open programs. Is there an option to leave the program selection option slider in view? Perhaps an option to use multi-finger swiping to bring up the multi-tasking slider?

Reason I ask is because I'm a little (perhaps a little irrationally) paranoid about the repeated use of the home button that might make it wear out and damage faster. Thanks!

AirPlay will only send audio to Airport Express, not an Apple TV. This really sucks for those of us who use our Apple TVs to stream audio. I can understand not being able to stream video from an iPad to an Apple TV first gen, but they are simply limiting functionality that already exists in iTunes, creating an experience that is disjointed. For what, another $100 of my money? A$$holes.

That's the only way to do it, and to be honest, you're worrying too much. I've seen a friends original iPhone that still works and his home button feels just as good as my iPhone 4's. Don't worry about a thing

Nice to know! Thanks! :)
I still think a software method of switching applications for multitasking would be nice.

Have found it pretty reliable (although apps seem slower) until today.

I've launched up the 'Epic Citidel' a few times and that runs pretty good but I've found that afterwards the device seems very sluggish.

Now Settings is crashing on me and iBooks is very laggy - even after a reboot.

Something I noticed (or missed) -- I can't see my 3G usage any more when I go to Settings --> Cellular Data. Hmm... I keep my 3G off unless I actually need it, so I won't go over my 250mb, but I can't actually see or change my usage plan. Aah the joy of beta. :) I'm sure it'll be back in the next build.

Everything else works beautifully. Fast, smooth, no crashes.

I see this also. Tried both the update and then later the restore and still can't see the button. Nothing about this in the release notes. I wonder why some say they can see the button.

Is it me or is battery life reduced? Seems to be depleting faster than before, though it could be a false observation

It's been out for a day when you wrote this post. How could you jump to such a conclusion? Battery is fine for me so far on 4.2 beta1.

Actually it "seems" like it's draining a little faster to me also. But it's hard to be certain yet.

So the orientation lock is the new mute. Yet the old 2-second-hold mute is still there?

Ingenious.

I am not sure if this is an issue only with 4.2, but if I click on an email address is Safari and it opens Mail, when I type I can't see what I'm typing. The text is there, I just can't see it. Mail works fine if I open Mail, then start a new message.

Gave 4.2 three tries. After the third try, I couldn't restore back to 3.2.2 soon enough.

--The Early Edition crashes on launch. Disappointed because this is a daily app for me. Any other RSS readers crashing for people?

--In Safari, sometimes drop-down menus/fields like the "Search this Thread" in these forums don't show up or only show a small portion when clicked on.

Otherwise, still a pretty stable beta.

Was able to get my UDID verified for $7 from someone on eBay, pretty effortless.

Installing 4.2 now...will be losing the jailbreak but that's ok for now, all I really used it for was some multitasking and SBSettings for brightness control. I'm anxious to try something new as 3.2 and jailbreak have become kind of stale.

I know many people across forums and eBay that are accepting money to validate your UDID to allow you to installed the 4.2 beta on your iPad, but this is the first beta of many to come.

Are you going to be able to download future betas, or is the $7 for a one time thing?

One thing I've noticed is that in iPod my album tracks appear in a random order when I'm viewing in album mode. When I select a track and go to the 'now playing' screen the tracks are in numerical order but continue to follow the out of order track listings. No, shuffle is not on. Anyone else seeing this?

The only other niggle I have is that sometimes when I close an App I want it to close. Everything goes to the multi tasking bar, and of course you can close it from there, but I wish there was an option to close stuff simply from the App itself.

All in all it's quick, I like how it now shows me how many tabs are open in safari, how birthday events now sync to calendar without having to mess about with subscriptions and being able to wirelessly print is a most welcome addition. :D

The UDID registration is good for 1 year according to the eBay auction.
