Ah cool, thanks. So not to beat it to death, but you're saying if I understand correctly, that FMi will work via Wi-Fi just not as accurately without the GPS?

That would be good enough for me. Would be kinda nice to be able to have a chance of relocating a $700 device should it grow legs! ;)

off topic-
scary things about tech- using a $20 nokia phone, i phoned a friend (to an iphone4) sitting next to me the other day, he checked origin location and found the call being traced about 10 meters from our current location!

eish :D no hiding anywhere

Yay! Side grump:

The whole point of getting my elderly mother an iPad, was that it supposedly would be a nice choice for people like her who've never owned a computer. Unfortunately that also means she cannot get the update on her own.

I hope that one day Apple comes into the 2010s and makes updates available over the air. Having to tether to another computer is ridiculous, and is a reason why Android devices can make more sense for many people around the world.

It has been made quite well known that the iPad is not designed to be a standalone device.

Actually, I posted 1 comment about it and then told another poster why I voted negative. It's the constant insinuations by both SnowLeopard2008 and pmz that have kept me in this conversation. If either of them had not called me a moaner and made ridiculous claims as to how this was good, I would have dropped the issue on page 2.

I just have a hard time tolerating the "Apple does no wrong" party line. You should see my ignore list... SnowLeopard2008 is getting on there right now, I still have to monitor pmz on a few subjects before he qualifies.

When have I crossed that line? There are plenty of things I disagree with Apple on. But then again, I have something to disagree with from almost every company. I just tolerate some of them because nothing is perfect. I don't like Apple using Foxconn to manufacture their products because I know what the workers feel everyday and their working conditions. But if I didn't use Foxconn manufactured products, there'd be little I can use.

Whatever. I really don't care about being on your ignore list. I personally disagree with many people but I like to hear their opinions rather than kind of censuring them out. Not everybody agrees with you or me. Learn to accept that. Hope you read this before you ignored me and can put aside our differences.

So, If my Iphone 3GS gets stolen, Apple wants me to buy a 4G rather than just help me locate it?

That does kinda sting a bit...

Golly willikers, whiners!

This is the day that iPad owners have been awaiting for months, and discussion & celebration is getting derailed by whiny snits complaining another older-generation product doesn't get a bonus service free. Chill!

Yay for iPads finally getting features iPhone 3Gs have had practically since there were iPads!

The 3GS does everything it was advertised to do and more. Quit buying old technology and expecting the latest and greatest features.

You're not buying old technology if you bought the 3GS when there was no iPhone 4. The thing is that the 3GS is capable of Find My iPhone so there's no reason not to include it, but I trust Apple had their reasons.

Well im waiting for it and i dont even have an iOS Device yet :p ... waiting to get my brand new 16GB Wifi iPad this week :) ... Cant wait to get hold of it ..

What about the hardware justifies this ? I paid for my 3GS same as any iPhone 4 owner. Greed is all it is.

Finally, someone who hit the nail on the head. It is greed. It's them trying to get us to buy a new phone when a 3G and 3GS works perfectly fine (and is more durable).

Someone else wrote about their concerns about the software reliability. I'm in that boat too. I've seen ZERO features reported that make me think this is worth upgrading to. They only recently fixed the horrible sluggishness that nearly ruined my 3G because it wasn't optimized. My apps work now. Thanks but no thanks on the upgrade.

You can now log in using your iTunes Store Account or create a new free "mobile me" account from the device. Previously that was disabled in the beta builds.

Is it not available in the UK yet? I keep getting the "This version of the iPhone software (4.1) is the current version." message :(

I have iTunes version 10.1 and I'm using an iPhone 3G...

Any help?
