What about the hardware justifies this ? I paid for my 3GS same as any iPhone 4 owner. Greed is all it is.

Are you really surprised by this development? If you are (I am suspect you aren't), you're naive. Apple proves us over and over they are greedy bastards. This is nothing new.

But, I have an iPhone 4 and I'll gladly take my new FMiP service. And you know what, in 6 months or so, the iPhone 5 will be announced and it will have features my current iPhone 4 can technically do, but will not be allowed due to Apple's greed. That's fine. And in February, iPad 2 will come out and all sorts of bitching will occur within the group of people who bought the current iPad at friggin TJMaxx for $399 this coming week. It's just a way of life if you chose to buy Apple products.

Quit buying old technology? The 3GS was sold *this year* as Apple's top of the line, newest phone.

Introduced June 8th, 2009.

Every time you buy something like this you have to weigh the possibility of something coming out fairly quickly that changes fundamental capabilities.

windows phone? lol yeah right. has anyone heard anything about that device? Doesnt matter it will flop

It's going to take off! Just like the Zune di-Oh... Wait...

----------

I, for one, am excited about 4.2. It's been a while since I stepped out of the dark ages and got a new Apple Device. My iPhone 4 has been great, and I'm looking forward to trying out Find My iPhone, the new Text tones, Find My iPhone, AirPrint, AirPlay, and whatever else gets thrown in.

----------

People in this thread are too greedy and selfish. MY 3GS DOESN'T GET THIS... MY IPHONE 4 DOESN'T GET THAT...

You people should be so lucky!!!

How many other companies even bother to push out major phone updates at all? Not only should most of you consider yourselves lucky to get 4.2, you should be lucky Apple even gave you iOS 4 in the first place.

----------

There are bigger things to cry over, sad selfish kids. Gimme this now, gimme that tomorrow... Appreciate what you have and what you get. Some people are lucky to have whole families this Christmas, and yet this thread is full of people whining about their iPhone's feature list.

Preachy, but true.

I'm not dumping on the people excited (note spelling) about 4.2.1. I AM EXCITED about 4.2.1...just not so excited about everyone bashing Apple for giving away something for free that most people wouldn't use, anyway.

Ah Sorry Darling didnt mean to upset :) .. my Bad

Another reason I'm mad at having a family plan and not being the primary member. Not only didn't I qualify for an early upgrade, even though I bought my 3GS on the 3GS release day, but now I'm being withheld on OS features because I didn't want to shell out $400 for the iPhone 4. This sucks. Good reason to stay away from the family plans. At least I'll qualify for an upgrade in February.

Or, you could relax and look at it from a more realistic perspective. All these features you are being withheld (which is what, one lousy feature??) you will get when you upgrade in February. What's the big deal? It's not like they are going to take away features.

Man, I really don't understand how some of you actually feel these are valid arguments.

here another thought, for people always yelling about fragmentation on android, everytime apple has put something out lately, there is always a caveat.

ONly for this or that, blah blah.

Off all the things they limit, this is the most baffling. What limitations does FMI have that makes it so, when it is free, it cannot work on older hardware?

Who says it doesn't? I've got a 3G and FMi has worked from the day I bought it. The better question is, what proof is there that FMi isn't free on older models? The inclusion list hardly said anything about being an exclusive list.

All this bellyaching and I bet 99% of you wouldn't even use Find My iPhone. Do you lose your phone often? Do you really expect to find it using FMi?

I pay for MobileMe and I never did see the point of Find My iPhone.

Ditto to all the homeowners who own firearms for home defense. 99% will never have a home intruder to shoot. But having that shotgun really puts my heart to rest knowing that I can protect my family it we end up being in that 1%.

Actually, I posted 1 comment about it and then told another poster why I voted negative. It's the constant insinuations by both SnowLeopard2008 and pmz that have kept me in this conversation. If either of them had not called me a moaner and made ridiculous claims as to how this was good, I would have dropped the issue on page 2.

Does something about your iphone not work as originally and currently advertised? No? Yeah, you're a moaner. Par for the course.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

New find my iPhone app is available.

Just to clarify?

I've been using 4.2gm (not 4.2.1) will my itunes tell me to update?

Oh and the FMi app has been updated to allow anyone to use it:D

Sorry, it wasn't an argument. Just a gripe. BTW, if I did qualify, I could be facetiming with your mom (right now).

Who says it doesn't? I've got a 3G and FMi has worked from the day I bought it. The better question is, what proof is there that FMi isn't free on older models? The inclusion list hardly said anything about being an exclusive list.

*The free Find My iPhone feature is available for iPhone 4, iPad or new iPod touch (4th generation).

What OS features do you think you're being excluded from? FMi? Are you absolutely certain you ARE being excluded?

Sheesh! People are so impatient! Get a life, dude!

Just set up a mobile me account for free on the ip4 and find my iphone works :D

The mobile me website is down for the moment but it seems to be working fine!

And how did you setup mobileme account on ip4? Mobileme website is down for me and there is no related app either.

Stop whining! You can have it, several ways! UPGRADE FREE!!

So, If my Iphone 3GS gets stolen, Apple wants me to buy a 4G rather than just help me locate it?

That does kinda sting a bit...

Sorry I picked you out, but let's all read together from Apple's web page:

You can create a free Find My iPhone account on any iPhone 4, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation) running iOS 4.2. Once you create an account on a qualifying device, use your Apple ID and password to enable Find My iPhone on your other devices running iOS 4.2. Find My iPhone is not available in all countries.

This means you only need a friend with an iPhone 4, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation). You borrow the device for 5 min, set up the account, then you can use your device or a computer to use Find My iPhone. You can even go to an Apple store and do this.

But better yet, UPGRADE FREE!!!! Here's how!!

If you have a 3G or a 3GS, you are probably eligible for an upgrade. SELL your phone on Craigslist, and get an iPhone 4. I sold my 32GB for $360 CASH, and bought the 4 for $299 plus tax, which came to $360.14 (and I even got a free case! 2 actually, long story). So if you can afford a couple of bucks, you can upgrade for basically free!

Yes, you have to extend your contract, but I'm currently in Italy, and the iPhone 4 goes for $923 for the 16GB, and $1091 for the 32GB, and this is with a contract! (Go to www.apple.com/it, and multiply Euros by 1.4). It is partially for the high European prices that it is EASY and FAST to get a buyer that will pay MORE than you paid for your iPhone.

I was eligible after one year on the 3GS for a full upgrade (spend $100 a month or more with ATT and you can upgrade after 12 months), but I'm only extending my contract ONE year. If I didn't upgrade, I'd still have to keep it for one more year.

Even if you have an old 3G, 8 gig, you can sell these for about $200, and get the $199 iPhone 4! :D

One last point, if your 3GS gets stolen, you won't be using Find My iPhone on that device, or any other app, for that matter! You would do this on a computer. But you would want to borrow a 4 to set yourself up BEFORE your device gets stolen.

LOL are you serious? You just compared protecting your family to a freaking cell phone? Good grief, no wonder the priorities of the world are so screwed up.

You answer me this: you go to the movies and lose your iPhone. Someone picks it up. You go and use Find My iPhone to do what? Find it's location? Beg the person to give it back to you (which obviously is a stretch seeing my above statement about priorities).

I'll ask again: Find My iPhone is going to do what for you?? You are better off buying insurance on your phone than using some damn app so you can see it on a map.

Yes!

I pay for MobileMe and I never did see the point of Find My iPhone.

I have used it several times. The last time, my daughter's fell out of her pocket near a friend's house, and it was found on the street by somebody. I used FMi to track the phone to a bar across town, and played the warning sounds while walking though the bar. I recovered it. That was worth the paid MM family plan, right there.

Also, my girlfriend dropped hers out of her purse a couple times over the years. We were able to recover it both times, no problem.

Yay! Side grump:

The whole point of getting my elderly mother an iPad, was that it supposedly would be a nice choice for people like her who've never owned a computer. Unfortunately that also means she cannot get the update on her own.

I hope that one day Apple comes into the 2010s and makes updates available over the air. Having to tether to another computer is ridiculous, and is a reason why Android devices can make more sense for many people around the world.

I am sympathetic and in the same situation. Today the choice is an iPad with this wart or an Android device. IMO the iPad's benefits far outweigh this nit. Also, won't an Apple store update a device? Yes, it requires a visit.
