Apple, On time?! Never!

Have a little patience, everyone. I just hope to get it downloaded before the servers are flooded.

On time? They are on time. Is it 1:00PM EST yet? No.

They're right on schedule for the day.

Maybe I should also have included those that don't know common time zones. It worries me. :p

Agreed, same here. The fact that people can't take the time to do the math, or worse, the fact that some don't even know how is a bit disturbing.

I know you won't believe this, but Find My iPhone has already led to the arrest of an uncountable number of thieves and the recovery not only of the phones themselves, but hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stolen goods since the program began. FMi lets you track the location of a stolen/missing phone and if the person who picked it up is honest, gets your phone back to you quickly and easily. If that person is dishonest, it gets them arrested. Simple as that.

People forget that not all phones that are lost are actually stolen. I've used it to track down where I've left my phone, or to confirm that it's lost somewhere in my house. It can also be useful for a parent to keep tabs on their kids, privacy debate for another time.

No, I'm sorry, I don't believe it. A few people like the guy earlier may have had luck with it but I refuse to believe iPhones are falling out all over the place to lead in an 'uncountable number of thieves and thousands of dollars in goods'.

Damn, if only Floyd Mayweather's girlfriend had Find My iPhone, huh?

Looking through the comments, it always amazes me how many people got to declare how much they hate Apple and hate free things, or it's just not good enough. UGH!

Don't count on it. Target times are only target times, and Macworld isn't Apple.

Likely Apple (I figure they're still using Akamai?) is likely bringing a lot of servers online to handle this. That's a lot of device updates in one day.

Finally, something.

So the Find My iPhone update is now available if you check the updater in the App Store on your iOS device.

Also, the MobileMe Website is updated with the new look, and it seems to be working fine.

I'm going through the steps of getting up to date and trying it out as we speak. Er, as I type.

How can you be sick of waiting for something that isn't even scheduled for release for another 40 minutes??

WiFi triangulation. My iPad is freakishly accurate and that's without a sim in it so it could use GPS.

That's interesting. For wifi triangulation to work ( on the iPads without GPS) there would have had to been an area sweep of all the different wifi signals and then using record of all that date it would calculate, accurately it seems, your location relative to the other wifi signals.

I know Google did wifi sweeps and got a lot of stick for it, but the data they collected is the basis for how wifi triangulation works.

The question then is do Apple have that same kind of data? And then also would the FMI/triangulation feature work at all on a wifi ipad in areas where there's not a lot of wi-fi data to use?

Anyone know how long it might take to update? I've got to leave for the airport around 10:30 PST...

Is it 6pm or 7? The US just reset their clocks a couple weeks ago from daylight savings. I don't know if the UK did/does the same? It is about half past 9 in Cupertino now. Still another half hour left if the rumors hold true.

I knew some people wouldn't, but in all honesty, how many police reports do you read? How many newspapers do you follow that mention something like, "Burglar arrested when tracked by a stolen iPhone's find feature. Burglar was found in possession of thousands of dollars worth of stolen goods." Where I live, I have access to news from three major cities and numerous communities within a 75-mile radius. News reports of this sort appear surprisingly regularly since Apple first made the FMi feature available. And this doesn't even mention how thieves have been caught by having their picture taken on a stolen MacBook laptop computer. Of course, this tends to show the stupidity of the thief more than any real capability of the police. If the thief is going to give his location away or let his picture be taken, that's his own fault.

Oh, and even some cameras are able to do this as well. All it takes is a Wi-Fi card in the memory slot.

I'll ask again: Find My iPhone is going to do what for you??

My wife and I use it quite a lot. She can see how close I am on the way home from work. I also use it to see where she's at running errands (or left the book club meeting) while I'm watching the kids so I know how much I have to drink to keep my sanity. Also, one day I saw she was at the pet store so I called her and had her buy some snails. I guess you can say we use it more for fun and we hope to never *have* to locate our phones.
