Dropboz only offers 2GB, MM does up to 20GB. It's also got website hosting, Mail, Calendar and Contacts. And a photo uploading feature. Dropbox is also very finicky and I was very frustrated when using it although it was pretty awesome for being free.

...

I use Dropbox and Google services (Gmail, Documents, etc.) on a daily basis. They are very smoothly implemented and I have never had any problems with them. Never.

And the opinions about MM are not all sparkling. Here is one poor one, from a Mac-biased Website:

http://www.cultofmac.com/unreliable-mobileme-remains-a-hobby-for-apple-opinion/67059

I'm no biased to one platform.

Sorry, I had to quote you there, SnowLeopard2008, but that's funny.

Sorry, it wasn't an argument. Just a gripe. BTW, if I did qualify, I could be facetiming with your mom (right now).

And this quote RIGHT HERE is a perfect example of my earlier post about Apple releasing this during a holiday week when kids are out of school. When it rains, it pours.

And how did you setup mobileme account on ip4? Mobileme website is down for me and there is no related app either.

Get the FMi app. An update has just come out. It directs you to go to mail/contacts and events under settings and you set up a free account :D You may need to have 4.2 though.

LOL are you serious? You just compared protecting your family to a freaking cell phone? Good grief, no wonder the priorities of the world are so screwed up.

You answer me this: you go to the movies and lose your iPhone. Someone picks it up. You go and use Find My iPhone to do what? Find it's location? Beg the person to give it back to you (which obviously is a stretch seeing my above statement about priorities).

I'll ask again: Find My iPhone is going to do what for you?? You are better off buying insurance on your phone than using some damn app so you can see it on a map.

I'm sorry, should I have used cellphone insurance as an example of buying things that only 1% of the population gets to use?

It's not just to recover the lost phone. It also offers the option to remote wipe it so the thieves don't get your personal info. IMHO that's more important than recovering the device.

Sorry I picked you out, but let's all read together from Apple's web page:

You can create a free Find My iPhone account on any iPhone 4, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation) running iOS 4.2. Once you create an account on a qualifying device, use your Apple ID and password to enable Find My iPhone on your other devices running iOS 4.2. Find My iPhone is not available in all countries.

This means you only need a friend with an iPhone 4, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation). You borrow the device for 5 min, set up the account, then you can use your device or a computer to find your 3GS. You can even go to an Apple store and do this.

But better yet, UPGRADE FREE!!!! Here's how!!

Furthermore, if you have a 3G or a 3GS, you are probably eligible for an upgrade. SELL your phone on Craigslist, and get an iPhone 4. I sold my 32GB for $360 CASH, and bought the 4 for $299 plus tax, which came to $360.14 (and I even got a free case! 2 actually, long story). So if you can afford a couple of bucks, you can upgrade for basically free!

Yes, you have to extend your contract, but I'm currently in Italy, and the iPhone 4 goes for $923 for the 16GB, and $1091 for the 32GB, and this is with a contract! (Go to www.apple.com/it, and multiply Euros by 1.4). It is partially for the high European prices that it is EASY and FAST to get a buyer that will pay MORE than you paid for your iPhone.

I was eligible after one year on the 3GS for a full upgrade (spend $100 a month or more with ATT and you can upgrade after 12 months), but I'm only extending my contract ONE year. If I didn't upgrade, I'd still have to keep it for one more year.

Even if you have an old 3G, 8 gig, you can sell these for about $200, and get the $199 iPhone 4! :D

One last point, if your 3G gets stolen, you won't be using Find my iPhone on that device, or any other app, for that matter! You would do this on a computer. But you would want to borrow a 4 to set yourself up BEFORE your device gets stolen.

Common sense coming from Italy.

I'm proud. :D

You also have to have a first name that starts with S, Go to college at a public university, own a hybrid, Be born between Nov 21 and Nov 22nd 1980. You must have a Job, be close to an apple store and recognize Steve Jobs as your higher power.

Then and only then, can you get features on your old iOS device.

/Sarcasm, how many more hoops should be go through?

But you can set the password lock to do the same thing, can you not? They either guess 10 times and it wipes or they have to restore. Either way they don't get your info.

Ditto to all the homeowners who own firearms for home defense. 99% will never have a home intruder to shoot. But having that shotgun really puts my heart to rest knowing that I can protect my family it we end up being in that 1%.

Don't mean to derail the thread, but statistically speaking you're far more likely to be killed or have a family member killed by that gun than kill an intruder with it. It's a risk, as a parent, I choose not to take. I own guns, but I don't keep them in my house, stored in a secure location nowhere near my house. The intruders will have to just meet their demise at the end of a bat.

I know you won't believe this, but Find My iPhone has already led to the arrest of an uncountable number of thieves and the recovery not only of the phones themselves, but hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stolen goods since the program began. FMi lets you track the location of a stolen/missing phone and if the person who picked it up is honest, gets your phone back to you quickly and easily. If that person is dishonest, it gets them arrested. Simple as that.

Ah cool, thanks. So not to beat it to death, but you're saying if I understand correctly, that FMi will work via Wi-Fi just not as accurately without the GPS?

That would be good enough for me. Would be kinda nice to be able to have a chance of relocating a $700 device should it grow legs! ;)

How is this actually possible? If the Wifi ipad doesn't have GPS how can it possibly be tracked with my find my phone?

Just the "Stop Being A Child" hoop.

You upgrade, you get updates, you don't upgrade, you choose to live with what you have. Live with it. Not ONCE did I whine about what my iPhone 2G was missing before I got my iPhone 4, because I CHOSE to keep the old iPhone.

Look at it like this, while I was waiting on an iPhone 4, you had a 3GS. Did I come sobbing to your feet? No. Now it's the iPhone 4's turn. Come back to me when the iPhone 5 is out, and I'll tell you how little I care about what I'm missing.

Did you die this morning? No? Why aren't you thankful? This upgrade isn't the end of the world.

Are we getting the update or not.... Jesus!!!!...

What's taking so long Steve?....

How about the fact that it's not 1:00PM EST? Maybe that's it?

Maybe because it's 12:12PM EST? Maybe that?

HUH!

How is this actually possible? If the Wifi ipad doesn't have GPS how can it possibly be tracked with my find my phone?

The same way your location is found without a GPS chip on an iOS device - the coordinates get triangulated to within a few yards, and you have a general area. Not as great as a GPS, but that's how it works.

Apple, On time?! Never!

Have a little patience, everyone. I just hope to get it downloaded before the servers are flooded.
