I just wait for MacRumors to post an update when the software release and then try to go and get it. With my busy work schedule, waiting by the old MacBook Pro is not an option. Usually that means I can't get it until a few hours later but that's good enough for me. :) In fact if all of you could kindly wait until after 5:00 pm EST to start your downloads I would greatly appreciate the extra time to access apple's servers. (ha ha).

Anybody know if the iOS 4 version coming out is going to be different than the Developer version that was released during WWDC?

I hope so because my girlfriend's 3Gs constantly reset while on a call after I installed iOS4. I had to downgrade back to OS3 :(

Well 18:00 UK time is 03:00 Oz time so I will be updating at 5:15AM tomorrow when I get up :( At least I have the train journey to work to play with it...

That's the downside of living in the future! :)

And here i was, hoping they would release it as soon as it was 21 Jun everywhere!

That would make more sense and prevent excess server load.

I work for Orange and we've just got a email from Apple saying that, like last year, the new software will be released at 18:00 UK Time

I don't understand Apple's logic in releasing it at a time where most everyone in America is already awake. In doing so they cause everyone to flood the servers all at once. If they were to release it at, say, 4am Eastern, you'd get smaller groups of people flooding the servers as they woke up and realized it was released.

you sure? from what ive found the only apps that didnt background were the ones not updated to GM4.0

The only apps that background are VOIP apps, music players, apps that are temporarily doing something in the background (like uploading files), GPS apps and I think there's one or two other types.

Other apps always close and the apps bar just acts like a quick task switcher for those.

It's like Apple is asking for server problems the way they are doing it...

I'm going to try and wait until when I get my new iPhone so there's even more excitement haha.

I hope I can resist.

Just noticed when syncing my iPhone 3gs that the picture of the iPhone is a 3gs with the iOS 4.0. You can see by the fact the background on the main screen is custom not black.

And when I sync my 3G, it shows the folders and the new dock, but the background is black...looks like the 3G really isn't getting wallpapers :( While I understand the no-multitasking and the no video recording on the 3G, there is no good reason why the 3G can't have custom wallpapers.

I think I'll wait until tomorrow to upgrade, just in case other 3G owners report problems.

so because this is a thread about the iOS4, I have a question about updating!

so when I update will I lose all my textmessaging and personal settings:confused:! this doesn't sound that important but I have alot of messages I want to keep on my phone and because I can't back it up?

so small story short! will I lose everything i customized on my Iphone

There is: Apple's bank balance ;)

If you jailbroke your phone, you will need to restore, and will therefore lose all your settings and messages. If your iPhone isn't jailbroken, just hit update in iTunes when it's released and there will be no problem.

No, everything on your iPhone is backed up every time you connect to iTunes. The new software uses the previous back up to install from.

Actually, we're currently on GMT+1.
a.k.a. BST ;)

I would have thought they'd stagger the release, so each time zone gets it at the same specified time, would prevent server congestion and those getting it first wouldn't get it that much earlier than the last timezone to get it.

There is a good reason. The screen you're looking at is being refreshed many times every second. Drawing a black screen with some icons on it takes up less system resources than drawing a colourful one. It may not seem like a lot but the 3G has half the RAM as the 3GS which has half the ram as the iPhone4. Every little bit counts.

I'm running iOS4 on my 3G and it sure could use turning some stuff off.

I wonder what the iphone 4 retail packaging will look like. Ive seen the small picture of a box for the iphone 4 on the apple site but im not too sure that it will actually look like that.

Why can't you back it up?
