I'm going to try and wait until when I get my new iPhone so there's even more excitement haha.

I hope I can resist.

I tried that with 3.0 and my switch from my iPod Touch to the iPhone 3GS.
I couldn't do it.

I wonder what the iphone 4 retail packaging will look like. Ive seen the small picture of a box for the iphone 4 on the apple site but im not too sure that it will actually look like that.

I would have guessed it would be final.

Anyone holding off on iOS4 until they get iPhone 4 so it feels even newer? I haven't decided yet.

I thought about that, but it’s probably better to update now so that you can transfer all your apps and settings from a backup (assuming that you can restore an iPhone 3G backup to an iPhone 4).

Anyone know if this is the case?

I've found 4.0 actually runs a ton better on my 3g than 3.0 did. Application opening and closing animations are smooth, there's no lag when scrolling through menus, things open quicker. Strangely enough I did have a bit of slowdown for 1 or 2 days, but it seemed to disappear. I've been running 4.0 now since the GM was released and it's made my 3g snappy enough again to make me a happy owner until the iPhone 4 comes out.

wow im glad to hear this...my 3G is barely usable....and I was hoping to have a new phone this week. But of course my luck strikes out and white isnt available. So hopefully 4.0 makes my 3G usable till white comes out.

What will iOS 4 be like on my 2nd gen iPod Touch? I know it won't have multi tasking, but will I still be able to lock the screen orientation? How about a home screen background picture? And what else won't work on it that's a bigger feature of iOS? I know folders should work, but is that it?

I don't understand Apple's logic in releasing it at a time where most everyone in America is already awake. In doing so they cause everyone to flood the servers all at once. If they were to release it at, say, 4am Eastern, you'd get smaller groups of people flooding the servers as they woke up and realized it was released.
I would assume they are using Akamai to host the files so they shouldn't have any download bottlenecks.

Exactly what I am doing. No sense in spoiling some of the fun by updating my 3G only 3 days before I get the iPhone 4.

the gold master is the gold master. release candidates are used for fine tuning, unless there's a show stopper bug that was somehow missed they won't change the gold master one bit (literally) as it would require another round of qa/beta testing.

But we have to remember that the last Developer seeded build of iOS was "GM RC" so this build was a possible release candidate as it wasn't just Gold Master. I still think some polishing has been done to the final copy as there where a few little foibles with the RC build. And the ability for some custom SMS tones would be nice!! :D

exactly

one time someone i know found a lost MacBook. after no one claimed it he asked me to help him out. being paranoid i monitored the network traffic while updating the software and it was getting all the updates from akamai

I have an iPod touch 2nd gen, and iOS 4. It does NOT come with multitasking or the background home screen options, but still does have folders, screen orientation lock, etc. I now jailbroke it to enable the multitasking and everything and i have to say that it was a good decision to leave out multitasking because it sucks my battery life dead; used to be about 4.5 hours, now down to 2.5 at the most.

Just noticed when syncing my iPhone 3gs that the picture of the iPhone is a 3gs with the iOS 4.0. You can see by the fact the background on the main screen is custom not black.

It's been like that since iTunes 9.2 came out. At least that's when I noticed it.. I've been running iOS 4 ever since.

Help!!

I live on the east coast. When can it get the update? on itunes it shows the iphone with backgrounds and folders but under that where it says check for update it says everything is up to date. HELP!!

From http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/ios4-software-update.html
Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking, custom wallpaper, and Bluetooth keyboard support are available only with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).

No portrait lock either, that is a part of the multitasking UI, though I don't know why they couldn't just display that one portion of the multitasking UI for audio controls and portrait locks, on 2G iPod touches and iPhone 3G.

It will not be nearly as big of an update for iPod touch 2G or iPhone 3G users, but since its now free for iPod touch users, I would still update.
