iOS4 runs fine on my 3G. The longest part was deciding which app should go into what folder & what to call said folder.

I did a backup before I upgraded to iOS4 so it was much faster than some people who did a backup during the upgrade.

I think that's the secret. I plan on doing the backup before i upgrade my gf's 3G tomorrow.

lol... took me a while to decide what app goes in what folder and what they should be labeled.. OCD :)

Okay... Thanks, I guess I really look like a dumb ass now. LOL I hate icons, whats wrong with text saying that.. LOL. It looked like a refresh button for the ipod or something??
Anyway thanks.

You're welcome. I'm just glad you weren't a 3G owner weeping bitter tears....

Wait. I'm a first gen iPhone owner! If you want a laugh, list all the features iOS4 and iPhone 4 support now compared to the first gen! Don't forget stuff from previous updates like:

Voice control
MMS
Compass
Video recording

Not to mention all the shiny stuff!

I did a backup before installing iOS 4 as well, and the upgrade took no time at all. So I tend to think the "pre-install backup" is a good plan.

I also downloaded the IPSW directly and used Shift+Update in iTunes to install it, for whatever that's worth.

Does anyone know how to enable Custom Dictionary on iOS 4?
I've tried to enable multiple languages, but it doesn't seem to help me, and I would kill for this feature?

Just tap it until you have orientation you want. Tap again to change orientation.

Love ios4 seems blazing fast compared to OS 3 at least on my 3GS

Yay Apple, when is my 64 G coming? :)

I just put it on my 3GS. Very impressed. Folders are great, speed is just as good as before, everything is working as it should. Excellent. :)

I've been looking for that feature for over a week now, and apparently it was disabled in one of the earlier developer betas. Sad... :(

I grouped all of my frequently used apps into a folder, put it at the most left side on the dock, name it "Start." You know, for nostalgia sake. :D

That's pretty sad for a phone that's only 2 years old.

The whole "Apples last longer" mindset no longer reflects reality.

The current set of managers running Apple realize that forced obsolesence is much more profitable than delivering long term value to customers. It's much better for the stock value to fill the toxic waste facilities with last year's model of an Igadget than it is to provide updates.

It's not only Apple - the rest of the smartphones and not-so-smart-phones are the same. You get what you get when you buy them - you should not expect that you can improve your feature set with future upgrades.

*sigh*

On the 3G, after you've upgraded, it will be sluggish and running like ****. Reset the phone, by holding the lock/home button until it restarts. It should run fine after that.

Birthday Calendar Colour

Anyone knows how to change the colour of the birthday calendar? Or a work-around?

I can't establish any more a background image for the lock screen (iPhone 3G—I know there are no bg images for home screens of older devices). It worked very well with 3.1.3. Seems to be a bug. I can choose it, and the software confirms, but the image won't show up. I know it's a minor problem but annoying anyway.

On the other side: My iPhone 3G seems to be snappier, no joke. Needed update time all together: 5.5 hours, no joke as well.

whats the deal with the folders...Surley you can put more icons in them. I have tons of games and would like them all to fit in gaming folder. Any ideas how to fit them all in

It's not really forced obsolescence with the rate the mobile computing world is exploding right now, and it's not like an iPhone purchased last year or the year before preforms any worse than it used to and for the most part (except for hardware specific features) all iPhone and iPod touches can run the majority of the same applications.

Restoring iPhone music and videos? The last updates have always erased my music. I believe this is why the backup took so long. In the past I don't think music was ever backed up.

Folders just do not work for me in practice - just makes apps even harder to find and open. Stuff gets buried and you forget you even have it.

iPhone needs to take a clue from Android's app management - just keep them all tidily alphabetized, and let the user qualify whether an app is important enough to get a spot on a home screen...

Mutitasking seems to work very well though, even though the MT-enabled apps are trickling in. Doesnt seem to be affecting battery life much. I think the 'managed' background processing model is actually a much better idea then just whoring out system time to whatever process wants it.

I don't like the task switching animations though, just as I dont like the animations when closing/opening apps. It gets done alot so dont delay it for eye candy.

iphone 3G

for the people who plan on keeping their iphone 3G and updating to iOS4, beware! When I upgraded all of my pictures that I took with my digital camara became very blurry on the phone. I have not tried to remove them, and then re-sync them to the phone which might resolve the problem but I figured I would throw it out there as a caution to those that don't plan on getting a 3Gs or iphone 4.

I read this at the beginning of the thread before I updated so decided to remove my photos first. I'm still waiting for my music to restore I'll let you know when I re-sync my photos.
