i downloaded the update at the beginning of this thread, if i option click on update and select the download, will it go through just like a update? will i keep all info currently on the phone? or is it better to go with the restore click option? or do they do the same thing?? just trying to 1) convince myself to update a 3G 2) which way to go about doing it!

I takes the language from your system settings and/or your iTunes account to switch languages, I have my system in English but I have iTunes accounts in the USA, UK and Spain, sometimes the US & UK stores shows up in Spanish if I have a Spanish keyboard chosen on my system. :D

Thanks for the explanation. It's weird because up until today, the iTunes store on my computer always showed up in English, and as far as I can remember, the same for the Apps and iTunes store on my iPhone. I know for a fact that the stores weren't in Spanish; I would have noticed that since I don't speak it as well as French or English.

I'm not sure why the store wouldn't be in French for me, since that is my primary language on my computer and is the language my phone has always been in. I can only guess that since it's a US iTunes account, that it doesn't have French as an option. Spanish is ranked higher on my list of preferred languages in my System Preferences, so it must pick that over English. It's just odd that it chose today to start doing so, which made me think they may have changed how the display language is determined.

Anyone else having issues with iOS 4 on the 3G? Mine keeps crashing randomly and reboots. I didnt start from a backup on this update so I know old data isn't an issue. Glad my iPhone 4 comes thursday...

What are the pros and cons of turning off cellular data? Ok I figured it out.

I succeeded in getting os 4 on my 3GS. The backup was going on 2 hours, so I canceled it, rebooted my computer, then restarted the install, then fell asleep during the backup. Next thing I see is the firmware updating then phone reboot and success. The one thing that disappoints me is not being able to create albums in photos without using iPhoto. Other than that, I guess I'll take it for a test drive and see how it goes.

I don't remember seeing that screen when I did my upgrade on my 3GS ( I stepped away from the computer and didn't watch the install) but when it was done all my music, podcasts, pictures etc... were on the phone as they were before the update.

My update is going ridiculously slow, (I'm approaching 3 1/2 hours) so I have time to see stuff like this.

Thanks for your answer though. :) At this rate, I'm estimating at least another hour before I can find out for myself...

My iTouch always showed full strength wireless anywhere in my house. Now, after the update, it varies while in my hand, just 6 feet from the access point!!

WTF!

If this persists, I'll give up the folders and iBooks in an INSTANT if I can revert.

I noticed the weak wireless signal after upgrading my 2nd gen ipod touch to 4.0 as well.

oh good lord

I started right after downloading at 1305 EST.

It sat on 'Backing Up...' and did not move, so I stopped it & restarted it, then stopped and resynced without updating to iOS 4. Finally, I decided to let it run and started the update for a third time at 1351.

At 1617 EST it began restoring from backup, iOS 4 installed (!)

'Restoring iPhone applications...' at 1634

iPhone comes alive at 1637, the above mentioned 'Restoring...' continues.

'Restoring music and videos...' commences at 1655 :p

Finally finished at 1755!! :D

1st gen iPod Touch owner here. I'm Sad now :(

In other news I'm glad I waited to upgrade (4th gen). I can understand not having support for 1st gen at all and things like multitasking not being supported on earlier models (think processor speed, ram, etc.) but the no custom wallpaper on 2nd gen is a little odd to me (probably justified).

That's strange. I am running Windows 7 (64bit). I have a 32GB iPhone 3GS that maybe had 450MB free. I had run a backup or two over the past few days. When I did the upgrade at around 1:30PM EST today the whole process maybe took 30 minutes or so.

I synced my 3G and then performed an additional backup (right-click iPhone and select Backup) before checking for updates. I started the update and the "Backing up iPhone" process took about 10 minutes for me.

AdamA9 and hawkeye411 thanks for your comments, yeah i did do that hawkeye and its been 4 hours i excepted hour or half not not this long can i speed it up because i cant use my 3GS at all!!

Two things.

1) Did you finish downloading the update?

2) Did you complete the backup?

Wtf?!

I started this blasted update on a 3G almost 6hrs ago. It hadn't budged from about 8% until a freakin AP notification came through. I stopped the backup because I didn't know if the notification had screwed things up so I put it in airplane mode. WTF?! This @#$%$ so-called update that really offers little for us 3G users has stolen the better part of my day and NO phone use? REALLY?!!! WTF Apple? Is this your way of forcing us to upgrade or something? Now I'm back to square one. This really blows.

got the download listed at the beginning of this thread done. I'm ready to leave work and go home. Internet is down at the house, do I need to be online for the rest of the update procedure or am I ok to go on home and do the install since I already have the 4.0 download??

I am sure it is just atmospheric conditions affecting your WIFI and today being update day everyone is waiting for errors :D I have had no issues with wifi or 3G and have been using iOS4 for a few weeks, I get full service even with the Time capsule at 20% power... check again tomorrow :p

I've been on "Backing up iPhone" for over an hour - 3G 16gig with 3 gigs free.

What gives?

My 3G 16 Gig with 2.6 Gigs free took WELL over an hour (Going on hour 6 right now) It does eventually get past the Backup state. Mine is still currently 'Restoring iPhone applications...' Looks like it does a complete wipe, installation of iOS 4, then restore from backup. Even after my restore from backup completed it continued on with more 'restorations'. Going on 3 reboots of my phone so far

Yes, it blows. My 3G iPhone took just as long (and still going). It will eventually get past the Backup state. I also canceled my 1st attempt to put mine in Airplane mode to prevent any interruptions.

I backup pretty regularly too and I had about 350mb available on my 16GB 3G. From what I read though, most 3G users are pretty long waits.

3G owners getted F'd again.

Not only does our update and restore take over 6 hours. We can't even use custom backgrounds for the home screen! Looks like Folders is all we get.

I'm not TOO disappointed though. My wife is getting this one. I'll be picking up my 32GB iPhone 4 on Thursday :D

fwiw

Also... fwiw: I too did a full back-up and sync this morning in anticipation of the update. Made no difference at all. At this point I just hope it's done by midnight or so since I'm leaving town in the AM. :(

WHERE IS FACES AND EVENTS in photos????? missing features!!
Has anyone noticed that FACES AND EVENTS are not in the iOS4 upgrade today as it was in the beta versions?

Looks like Apple pulled these features from the final version compared to the beta version.

any have FACES and EVENTS in photos?

Faces, places and events are all in Gold Master which is an identical build to today's release, or are you referring to beta 4 and not GM?
