I was getting 7.5 hours since the update came out. Then a few days ago I let the battery run dead, and fully charged. I've got 9 hours of usage 3 days in a row!
No funny cheating business either like listening to music for 4 hours. This is ACTUAL usuage! Talking, texting, browsing, using apps.
Brightness on 70%. Wifi on always, Bluetooth off, push off.
4S on at&t.

I'm shocked!

*edit*

Btw, I was getting 6 hours usage before 5.1 came out!

Even worst tonight , little whatsapp and tapatalk:

Battery on IOS 5.0.1 to 5.1

I recently bought an iPhone 4S in February. I have for a long time checked these forums on MacRumors, before the release of the 4 to be precise. I didnt purchase the iPhone 4S on launch to see what people had to say. I've recently now purchased one in February 2012 which came with IOS 5.0.1. I have to say from my experiences i was not unhappy with the battery performance in which i achieved a day standby and 6 hours usage. Which consisted of txting, whatsapp, phone calls of which also included facetime, browsing and heavy gaming. Havent even sync any music over yet. I took the plunge and updated to 5.1, i made sure my battery was at 100% before updating, then i unplugged from itunes and turned my phone completely off and back on. In the first run through i achieved using the same types of usage, 1 day and 8hrs of standby and 7 hours usage. Already an improvement i then have ran the battery right down till it turns off to calibrate the battery. This has worked great for me and has gave me significant improvements. I am obviously new to the update so dont have days of results, but for whoever is updating i would follow those steps, which many have also suggested. People who have had poor results i wonder if they have turned the device on and off and then run it right down. Hope this was helpful. Cheers...

I uploaded to 5.1 but haven't let the batter go under 40% since. In fact, I haven't since I got my 4S a few weeks ago. I notice too it drains faster now. So should I let the batter run down to 0% and do a full charge? Is this a recommended practice? I've read some posts which say the battery life has gotten better but I want to make sure it's not hurting my 4S.

I've got the 4s on 5.0. Saturday about 10pm I charged it to 100%, closed all the apps in the dock and these are my results so far. I have had location services and wifi on the entire time and bluetooth off. Used it normally for a weekend and did not close any apps since just after charging. I did let it run completely dead Friday. I think I'm getting pretty good life after reading what other people get and I'm a little afraid to update on the chance the people that claim there's are getting worse are accurate.

Would be nice if someone did a more scientific test than "I used to get x hours now I get y hours.

My battery life has improved after the upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1. This is not a scientific test, but similar use.

I initially thought my battery life was worse, but after two cycles of letting the phone run down until it shuts itself off, followed by charging to 100%, I am finding I am pleased with the 5.1 update. My battery life is better.

My battery life was pretty good with 5.1. 7 hours of usage and 1 day 6 hours standby. But now it's gotten a lot worse and it charges a lot faster now... like 10 percent in 5 mins. Is that a sign of a bad battery?

Mine charges fast too.

This is with a clean install of 5.1 and setting it up as a new phone. This was nearly 100% wifi usage and mostly web browsing and twitter/FB.

I don't post much, but this issue is affecting me now. I've never had a problem with my iPhone's battery life. I've been one of those people whos mostly lucky to be unaffected by them. I used to use my phone and was able to go about 2 days of minimal usage (checking email, a few short phone conversations, no gaming/internet usage to speak of normally)

However, after the iOS 5.1 update, my battery life has gone to crap. I plugged my phone in last night and when I took the phone off the charger at 7am to when I got to work at 8am the battery life had dropped 5% just sitting in my pocket for an hour. Previously I would never move more than 1% or so in that time.

I don't know if the iOS 5.1 update has turned some features back on that I had off, but I'm not one of the ones who got better battery life with the update.

iPhone 4 16gb.

Here's mine. 75% on WiFi, various calls and texts, etc. Clean 5.1 install. Just did my first cycle.

Ok 1 how did you get a fancy Verizon logo on the top? 2 your phone has been plugged in since last charge :)

Well, I'm Jailbroken, and have Zeppelin installed with the carrier logo add-on. Second, that screenshot was taken just after the phone rebooted from dead, so it would be accurate. :)

Same here! Charges very fast then goes back down quickly. Should I take it to an apple store?

Exactly the same issue here, on an iphone 4S 32gb.

I've tried everything I can think of, in terms of turning off all location services, hard reseting, etc... but nothing helps.

iOS 5.1 did alter some settings. I have restrictions enabled. Update set location service display icon off yet I still see it when gps is accessed as I set it to on in 5.0
I don't want to flick it on/off so what's displayed matches what's happening as my battery is good. Following the - If it works don't fix it - model.

So yea stuff got changed/reset

iPhone 4 (2 years old), clean 5.1 install.

3G on 24/7
Wi-Fi on 27/7
Bluetooth headphones were connected for the whole usage time
30mins 3G Skype video chat, 30mins audio
Couple phone calls

I have Google Latitude set to update my location automatically. It doesn't use the GPS constantly. I've always had it on and before 5.1 it didn't affect my battery life in any major way, and I don't think it is now.

Was that paper airplane icon visible in 5.0.1?

It seems to all of us that you do have things running that are utilizing your battery. Its not reasonable to perch on the "did not happen in 5.0.1" so it must be 5.1.

If you want to know for sure. Restore your phone to 5.1, setup as a new device and dont retore from a backup. Run for a couple of days. If your battery life is automagically better then you know its your configuration or settings.
