iOS 5.1 bricked iPad 1

So I downloaded iOS 5.1 and tried to install it on my original recipe iPad... after iTunes forced it to restart, it's just been sitting there with the Apple logo on the screen and an empty progress bar. No movement on progress bar for the past 10 minutes, and the iTunes readout shows all of my data on my iPad as just "other" even though it claims the iPad is up to date and 5.1 is installed.

Wondering if I'll need to restore it and try again... meh.

Quick question:

So now my iPhone 4S technically says 4G on status bar and AT&T made it very clear that they would throttle 3G phones at 3gigs and 4G phones at 5gigs. So does anyone have a clue if I have 5.1 now am I 4G at 5gigs or what? If anyone knows yes or no. Please tell me. I'm sure AT&T will figure a way out of saying yes it's 5gigs they will find some loophole

mine did that for about 20 minutes, just wait it out.

Relieved...

My 3GS did the update with the progress bar stuck at 0% for 30 minutes... I was relieved and I heard the bling that meant it was booted up...

"updated att netword indicator"

Is it a 4g icon!??? What!?

I distinctly remember from the iPhone 4S Apple saying that they were not going to market their HSPA+ as 4G because it would be disingenuous marketing. What ever happened to this stance? Perhaps they haven't sold as many 4S's as they would have liked by this time of year?

My download and install button is not highlighted. Does that mean that there is too many downloads going on right now?

Are you on wifi?

Hey all

So far there has been a lot Of info thrown around. I'm wondering if someone can definitively say if their 4S has the 3G toggle to manuly switch from 3G to 2G/EDGE. I'm on Rogers in Canada and ive only seen someone in the Netherlands who has the switch. Thanks for the help and it would also be great if someone could say if it's possible to not have the camera slider when the device is at the lock screen. Thanks again!

I saw a post in other thread confirming Rogers has the switch on 4S with 5.1.

Seems to be an At&t only issue. Complain to them because the carrier can also leave the switch out.

Because AT&T are scumbags and kept whining to have this changed to distinguish HSDPA from HSDPA+? Not that it matters since you're probably still gonna get similar speeds. :confused:

I cannot wait to leave AT&T for Verizon when the LTE iPhone is released. Aside for service issues, AT&T should be spanked by the FCC for the recent b.s. with their customers. Vote with your dollars. I would love to see t-Mobile become a bigger player as the only other GSM carrier in the states, and am glad AT&T didn't acquire them. Competition is better for everyone.

Siri for the original iPhone 4 would have been a nice addition.

Believe it or not, Siri was intended for the iPhone 4 as the LTE iPhone was on schedule for a release last year with the 4S as a backup. It was benched due to battery issues with the LTE/GSM/et al combo Broadcom chip. The next iPhone will be an even bigger deal than the iPad and 4S release (at least from what I've seen). The LTE alone will allow for simultaneous voice and data, paving the way for people who use that feature to move to Verizon.

Genius Mixes still not showing up

I'm an iTunes Match subscriber. I've completed the iOS 5.1 update on both my iPad2 and iPhone 4S and I still don't see where the Genius Mixes are available? A little help for a pal?

pointless update in my opinion :roll eyes:

best to wait for the next major one...!

Lol, why would you wait for the next major update. Then between now and then say if there is 2 or 3 more small updates then you would have to update them all indivudaley. :)

I have to wonder if the 4G indicator just replaced the 3G regardless if it is HSPA+ connection or not. I updated to 5.1 and went just outside my house and it says 4G. I ran a speed test and got only around a pathetically slow .5 MBps (same as I did before around my house). Not that I was expecting any speed increase after the software update, since it all depends on the cell tower you are connected to, but it is very misleading for them to just make everything say 4G now if that is what they are doing.
I believe you are right. Below is my test using iPad 2 and iPhone 4S

iPad 2 - shows 3G
PING = 119 ms
DOWNLOAD = 3.48 Mbps
UPLOAD = 0.94 Mbps

iPhone 4S - shows 4G
PING = 192 ms
DOWNLOAD = 3.05 Mbps
UPLOAD = 0.91 Mbps

I ran multiple tests and got similar results

Have patience, it takes awhile.

Great, Siri not updated for the UK, Find my friends still showing km instead of miles and the auto time setting running GPS all the time bug not fixed. :mad:

No go

i'm just glad i can update right from my device now

I've been trying for 2 hours to get the update and all I get is a message that "there is an error checking for an update...cancel or try again" Glad you can update because I can't.

Unbelievable. 5.1 OS versions later and we STILL can't delete ANY pic from our phones, only ones taken with the camera. STILL can't choose a "check all" option when editing email messages -- forced to select each message individually to delete/move/copy, etc. STILL can't add attachments directly to a message while in the mail app. And now comes the latest farce from them in the form of YET ANOTHER incremental update to a product and calling it new instead of introducing fresh, innovative features. I'm fed up.

What the hell was all that "we're finally allowing you to cut the cord" crap about when they introduced 5.0 if I'm STILL having to connect to my computer for anything?!!!!!!!

They've got one more chance with me in the next iPhone. I've tried my damnedest to be loyal since 2007 only for them to try to screw me outta my money by releasing these half-baked updates to both the hardware AND software in order to boost their profits and reputation. I can't possibly be the only one who clearly sees what they're doing...am I?

The competition's way too stiff at this point. This ain't 2007 anymore when they truly were revolutionizing things. More often than not with EVERYTHING they do these days they're just playing catch-up to what Android has already done, especially on the software side of things. And coming soon, with the new cameras and related software on the HTC ONE-series phones, once again they'll be lagging behind in the feature department.

Not only did I not upgrade to 4S, I'm surely not buying this "new IPad" just for a bump in screen resolution. And it's thicker and heavier! It seems trivial but if there's any tell-tale indicator of where this company is going after Steve's death that would be it. When in their history up to his demise did a new product come in that wasn't thinner and lighter?? Spare me the crap about the radios necessitating the extra bulk. Excuses, excuses. I'm so done if they release another 3.5" phone in the next update. I truly hate Android but just to demonstrate my frustrations with Apple I will switch so help me god. Are you coming with me?

You make some good points, but you do you really think each subsequent release will be thinner and lighter? Were you expecting an iSheet?

Have they fixed the bug that prevented you from setting Due Dates in Reminders? (At the moment you can only do it by setting a reminder, and then creating an alert in Calendar in iCloud, which prompts a Due Date to appear in Reminders.)

Hmmm, reset after update and my 4s now says "no sim". The sim works in my old nokia phone, and a vodafone sim works in the iphone.
I'm on virgin mobile uk, using an unlocked iphone 4s.

I had the same issue with Beta 3 installed.
OTA doesn't seem to be working in the beta build.
I had to manually update.

how did you update? I'm not seeing a GM to download on the developer site... does it give an option when plugged in to iTunes?

----------

Same here. It was there on the last 5.1 BETA Release I was on.

how did you update from the beta? I'm not seeing anything on the developer site, or OTA

hmm. i just hit update in the settings app, and let it do it's thing and i went on to do other things. i just checked and it's done updating!

Yeah, who needs bug fixes?

I wish it fixed some bugs. Both iTunes and iOS still have the 2 bugs present since the last major update. Smart playlists and "waiting for items to copy" sync problems.

Was hoping they'd fix them for this version. Guess we'll be waiting till September now.
