Agree. Music app for iOS 5 is horrible on the iPad.

Extremely difficult to select a playlist.

I agree. Listening to Podcasts just became immensely more difficult. Finding the latest issue... And how the heck do you subscribe on the iPad?

All in all I am completely underwhelmed with this extremely unsatisfactory app,
:(

Seriously, it's such a ridiculous step backwards that I can't figure out what the iOS team was thinking.

1) It looks ridiculous. Going away from the design aesthetic of iTunes or other native applications for a kind of faux old-time radio look? Really?

2) If you have a lot of playlists, look out. The huge images for each playlist aren't a problem per se, but they shouldn't be the default. I've got dozens of playlists on my iPad, and under OS4, it was easy to surf through them to decide what I wanted. There was a side column with the playlists, and the contents of whichever one you had selected showed up in the main pane. Now, when you select a playlist, it zooms into that list's contents... which makes it much harder to compare playlists quickly.

3) If you like to create new playlists, that just got more difficult, as well. On the iPhone and under iOS4, when adding songs to a playlist, you could use existing playlists to make it easier to find stuff. The iOS5 iPad Music app does not let you do so (although the iPhone one does).

4) There is no visual difference between playlists and playlist folders.

5) Seriously, isn't it about time we get some sort options and the like when viewing playlists or songs? Or how about having a list mode when viewing by artist or album? It's like whoever used this app only tested it with a hundred songs at a time. Those of us who keep thousands of songs on our iPad and like to use them for on the fly playlists are better off using iPhones. That's sad.
I actually sort of like it and I have 2500 songs on it but I also don't use playlists.

Totally agree!
Why didn't they use the GUI from the Remote app to make the Music app look more like our Mac (PC) iTunes?

and I'd also like to see CoverFlow on it.

Maybe it's confusing to users that iTunes isn't a music app on iOS but only a store.

Maybe they should have called "Music" or "iPod" just "iTunes" in the first place instead of separating but I see why they didn't. I agree, it's a bit of a mess.

Strange. I listen to my podcasts on my iPhone, and all of these features are present on iOS5 on the iPhone. Is the iPad different?

Very.

On my iPhone I haven't lost any of the functionality I used to have with the "iPod" app. The only real difference is that I have an awkwardly named and ugly iconed iPod app called "Music" (and don't get me started on how "Music" is actually a misnomer since people have podcasts, books, etc in addition to music in their audio libraries).

On my iPad 2, the "Music" app won't let me rewind 30 seconds (HUGELY valuable when listening to technical or science-heavy material), view Podcast information (literally the "program guide" for the podcast), or jump between chapters in audiobooks. What's worse, I can't change the menu of "Music" on the iPad like I used to (and like I still can on the iPhone). Every time I want to listen to a book or podcast, I'm forced to go to "more" and then select from there. Quite possibly the worst layout possible if you're like me and use the iPad to listen to a lot of podcasts and audiobooks.

Yeah, I have to agree. It seems so half-baked.

I listen to decent amount of music, and I rely heavily on playlists. I don't mind the new interface, it just doesn't work right. When I first saw it, I assumed it would work like photos, where you could "spread" the album covers out, but no. You can swipe over a COUPLE of the albums, not even all that are in the playlist.

Main gripe, and this may be for a small minority of us, is that lyrics are gone. I spent a good deal of time getting the lyrics into my files, and every now and then I like to read along. Not anymore. For no real reason. The iPhone still lets me do it iOS5. Weird.

I don't mind the control bar look. It's fine. Nothing wrong with the old one, though.

You scared the utter **** out of me. Luckily those things don't seem to be true in my case. I still have all those things.

The OP is referring the iOS 5 Music.app on the iPad. It's completely different than the slightly updated iPhone Music.app.

I love the new look. Google image search "Braun radio" and scroll down. You'll see the exact inspiration for the music app. Apple has been influenced a lot by Braun. I like the look. I don't want a shrunk down iTunes.

I agree about the missing functionality, ie the podcast stuff. I hate the missing 30 second thing. Weird to take features out.

It looks and feels "unfinished". Like Apple ran out of time and just threw it together. Seriously though, it doesn't have the polish of an Apple App. It's clunky and not intuitive.

Have to agree, the new app is bad. It is poorly laid out.
The overall UI is too oddball from the rest of the apps
The top looks cluttered in the middle
The search bar is on the bottom which ignores all other apps putting the search on the top
The repeat and shuffle buttons are difficult to tell when on
Go to delete a playlist but change your mind, and you have to switch to another screen to cancel
The orange seek line is different than everything else and looks out of place
The time bar should be longer to easily pick the right spot on longer tracks
There is a distracting flash when going to the next track on album view (when the album changes)
When switching between only full screen album art and seeing the controls, the album art moves slightly
While making this list, I got a bug that made the majority of the screen black. I had to force quit the app to get it back. Then I noticed the playlist was organized differently. There is NO way to set the playlist back unless I sync to a computer.
No option to change view from tiles to list on artists and albums
Lots of wasted space
I'm sure I can find more…

Ipad Music App

I agree the music app is BAD. I should have never upgraded. All my podcast now play at 1/2 speed - I use to play at 2x. I am very unhappy with this upgrade.

Am I the only one having trouble with song playback on iOS 5?

easily 90 percent of my synced music will not run on my iPad 2 or iPhone 3Gs.. Im hoping this gets fixed as my 4s is to be delivered this week.

major thumbs down apple, pick it up.

What Deschain said earlier is spot on. The iPad iOS5 music app is atrocious for podcasts.
It's such a step backwards I honestly wonder if they forgot to put these things in.

It's all the stranger since the iPhone app is largely unchanged and keeps all the functions.

Are those all still in the iPhone version?

Yup. No loss of functionality with the iPhone, just on the iPad. Strangest software design choices I've seen from Apple since they decided to make "Ping."

playlists?

can someone please explain to me how I am supposed to use playlists on this monstrosity??
I used to be able to click on the music app, scroll through my playlists and select a song...

Now I go to playlists and tap on one and it just automaticlly plays the first song on the playlist.. obviously this is NOT what i want.. in order to actually see the songs in the playlist I have to:

1.open music app
2. tap playlists
3. tap on the playlist --> some random song just starts playing
4. press pause to stop this random son
5. click on the album art next to the play button
6. tap the scren to bring up controls
7. tap the bottom right list
8. THEN I can select a song from the playlist

AM I missing something here?? It can't be THAT difficult...

In addition to all the above listed problems it baffles me, with all that beautiful screen real estate, why the play controls are so small! I doubt my parents could even read the playback info at the top of the screen! This app is just absolutely stupid. Whoever the designers were should be fired. Or better, their supervisors...

IOS 5 Music App won't show videos!

The ios 5 upgrade removed the ability to actually play music videos (video & music). Now it only plays music from the music videos, no movie function. I called Apple support and they confirmed that iOS 5 upgrade "down graded & removed the feature" for the iPad, iPhone and apple tv. This is a real mess as the video function does not allow my hundreds of music videos to be sorted by type, artist, album or play list; it only lists them all in alphabetical order.

I hope the outcry will stir Apple into action, if they aren't already. It's not as if we're asking for the world, merely basic functions that appeared previously.

It is absolutely mystifying how this ever got through testing.

I just sent this to Apple

Problems with the iPad “Music” app.

No longer plays the video on music videos.
No longer a way to change the playback speed in podcasts.
No more 30 second rewind button in podcasts.
No longer a list of total podcast episodes or new episodes.
No longer lists podcast episode dates!
No longer a way to “get more episodes” in podcasts.
No longer has an indication of podcasts already viewed.
No longer has a way to individually rate songs.
No longer has a list view for playlists, artists, albums or podcasts. This is a huge problem with a large library. At least give us an option!
Tiny playback window at the top in what must be about 4pt type, and this on a device with a huge amount of screen real estate.
High speed scanning with your finger on playback is much more difficult due to the small size of the field.
TINY little red line indicator for the playback progress bar.
Lyrics are now missing, even though they are available on iPhone and iPod touch.
Airplay controls for active/inactive change from white to very very light grey, nearly indistinguishable. Same thing with shuffle indicator in the “now playing” screen. This is inconsistent with the navigation screen, on which shuffle is white / black.
Bug: twice now, when switching from album to podcast, half the screen goes dark, locks up, requiring a hard reboot.
Audio books player no longer supports chapters!

Who wrote this application?!! More importantly, who in management guided and approved it? What a mess.

One last thing, on photo stream, PLEASE give us a way to delete individual photos on the originating device!

----------

In playlist list view there is no way to group the list by artist or song or album. (Am I right in remembering that the old iPad music app did that?)
