Sent my negative feedback also, Apple have ruined my iPad as far as listening to podcasts is concerned, it's been turned into a complete nightmare.

Yup.

My iPad also doesn't seem to understand how to sync them anymore. Podcasts I've already listened to keep ending up back on the iPad even though I have "unheard only" checked.

I downloaded Downcast from the app store (universal app) and haven't looked back. For podcasts its pretty awesome.

There's actually quite a few podcatcher apps out there on the store, all of them $2, Downcast was the first and only one I tried so ymmv. Seriously though, the music app sucks hard at podcasts, esp compared to this app.

Lots of things I don't like about my iPad 2 with iOS 5.
As mentioned by others:
No Lyrics. Since it has a large screen you'd think this would be a better platform to have lyrics available.

Secondly, on my iPhones I can see 8 playlists (9 if you include the partial one available and touchable in the scroll) at a time.
On the iPad 2 I can only see 12 at a time, and whats worse its in that scattered album grid. If I can see 21 tracks in a playlist at one time, why can't I at least have the option of seeing 21 playlists at a time. Right now I've got 96 playlists and seeing a random album cover for a playlist makes it distracting to find the one I want.

Yeah, great shout re: Downcast. Couldn't give a monkeys about the ghastly default Music app now I have this. Should have got it aaages ago.

Get SoundHound.

Play music in music app, launch SoundHound, it sees what's playing in music app, brings in controls, and displays lyrics that even move with the music. It's far better.

Thanks for the tip. Does it continue to play songs within a playlist? And does it include ratings, including the ability to assign ratings?

For podcasts, it's ruined.

Can't change the speed (previously you could set it to 1/2, 1 or 2x)

Can't get new episodes (without manually finding it in the store, there's no longer am"get more episodes" button.

No 30s rewind (very nice to have for spoken word.

It won't even play the next episode, after an episode finishes, playback just stops. You have to manually pick the next show.

Doesn't show the number of new episodes or total episodes.

No lyric support (show notes are very nice to have in podcasts)

I could go on. I HATE the music app. I consume a lot of audio on my iPad and this app is terrible. I'd almost give up all the things I like about ios5 just to go back to the old app and get rid of new POS.

+1!

I really liked it when i first saw it, it seemed nice. But then, as I started to use it, I don't like that you can't pinch out to go back to the main screen. Apart from that, I cant seem to scroll through the track with scrubbing (quarter speed, half speed) which is a must for podcasts. Also i can't seem to find the info or lyrics or even chapters for podcasts! WTF happened?

The Music App has had to grow on me. For Album listening, it's ok. I like the full screen album art and scrolling song info, but miss lyrics. I'll have to try a podcast. I like to scan through those pretty quick at 2x speed, and will be disappointed if that doesn't work.

Except you have to start playing in the Music app.

That's a big negative against something that's supposed to be far better.

Something that is far better doesn't need an external action first.

I just downloaded Downcast.

I've only played around with it for a 10 or so minutes but it seems great (it seems great on its own, compared to the music app, it is the most amazing, fantastic app ever created).

Highlights so far:

- Easily download new episodes
- Easily find, download (or stream, awesome) podcasts (wireless sync in ios5 works but it isn't great)
- subscribe to podcasts from the app (never understood why I couldn't from ios devices)
- can see what episodes are new and unplaced (sad that I consider that a feature since app,e removed it from their app...)
- lyric/show notes support
- change speed between 0.5 and 3x
- quickly jump 15 or 30s backwards or 30s or 2 min forward
- WAY faster to find new podcasts, iTunes store is hella slow, I could find and be downloading a new show in the time I launched and went to the podcast section of iTunes store.
- intuitive easy to use UI

Thats my list of awesome things in Downcast that I've noticed in 10 minutes of using Downcast. I don't listen to music on my iPad, and with this app, I'll likely never open the music app again.

My only complaint is the interface may be bordering cluttered. I think it's good, and intuitive, but it's a bit cluttered.

$1.99 is a steal. I listen to a lot of podcasts and my iPad was largely ruined with its 5 and the music app.

Geez, you'd think with all this praise I would have made the app or was getting paid to sell it. I just honestly think its great and has restored a ton of functionality after months with a crippled music app.

A couple more issues, sorry if these were posted already.

* No chapter support in audiobooks
* Podcasts don't continue on to the next one, have to hit play after each one (same goes for audiobooks that are in multiple files)
* Podcasts don't show the date any more (and podcasts only show in a tiny window so long titles are cut off even though tons of space around the edge of the screen is sitting there empty)

Also:
* It doesn't display graphical content of audiobooks anymore.
Apple said this version cuts the cord, and now we are getting hanged with.
I don't mind they changed the GUI, but removing functionality is really lame.
Either fix it, or make a separate app for it!

Worth quoting because I totally agree. I like this bit;

"(it seems great on its own, compared to the music app, it is the most amazing, fantastic app ever created). "

....encapsulates my thoughts exactly. It utterly smokes the music app from ios4, and compared to the music app from ios5...wow, Apple should go and stand in the corner, red faced, and recite must do better, must do better until the iPad 6 arrives.

Bit late to the party as I've only updated to iOS 5, but ya the music app is absolutely terrible. I really dislike the directon that apple have been going of late as regards their softwares appearance. This new fascination with recreating old physical objects in a electronic form seems both bizarre and totally redundant to me.

I wonder....

Apple deliberately scales down their app to a basic music player so people need to buy from the app store? Or is this a total rebuild of the application and this is just like a Beta version?

It seems odd what they have done to the music player.

IOS 5 and iTunes Match feel very much like beta. Especially the two in combination. I just don't get how a company that gained much of its popularity from an mp3 player can get the music portion of things so wrong.

I agree!

I agree! Why did they ruin it?!? I miss each of the things on your list every time I listen to a podcast. How do I get the old Music back?

Probably the single most annoying thing about my iPad. I could actually deal with the other issues you've listed, but this one is pretty unforgiveable.

I simply cannot understand what Apple were up to when they screwed around with the iPad music app quite as much as they did. The whole thing feels so unfinished. Yet I've seen no acknowledgement from them re the features they've removed.
