Actually looks like they decided to do a total remake of the coding and turned out having to release it before they got to add all the existing features.

Am I the only one here hating ios5 on the iPad 1?

My iPad resembles more an XP machine than an IOS device, it's that slow! Takes ages to switch between apps, some will take 5 or 6 seconds to load (looking at you huffingtonpost), webpages are taking close to 10 seconds or more and the music app is useless for me. It's crashed randomly multiple times when I try to rate and switch back to album view, all I get is a black image no matter what I click. I have to go to the home screen and kill it then restart it to have the same thing again. Not to mention the track cutting when I type a message.

Worst update ever.

So far, my Gen 1 iPad seems not to have slowed.

Wow, what a let down. I was looking forward to iOS5, but haven't taken advantage of any of its features yet....I'm still amazed by the step back the iPod App, (I'll start calling it Music, when I have one single music track on my iPad), for podcasts its a serious let down.

I would prefer to choose if I wanted to play a single or multiple podcasts. I would also like to have an indication as to which podcasts I have listened to, (yes I listen to so many I can forget where I am sometimes  )

Although I don't like it exactly, the way that the audio and video are kept apart means that I'm not jumping from iPod to Video app, because I watched a video podcast. I used to quit out of the Video app and go back to the iPod, (I much preferred the list view of the video podcasts, rather than thumbnails).

Of course I can live with the player the way it is, but I actually got used to :apple: adding to the experience, (even tiny steps), not creating silly problems. - Maybe I haven't been around here long enough, :p

I love it though. The new interface looks simple, I wouldn't love to be able to drag and drop my music into a playlist though.

Hate the album artwork browsing, especially of Playlists.

Hate the inability to pick a single artist and shuffle all their songs. (Choosing Artist> "The Beatles" brings up their songs sorted by album; the "Shuffle" option is gone, and picking a song then pressing shuffle only plays songs from that album.

Plus, it's so freaking laggy.

I don't have an iPad, just an iPhone 4.

Am I missing something? The music app looks basically the same to me. I'm a little annoyed they broke Music and Videos into separate apps, but I rarely watch videos on my phone anyway except for the occasional YouTube when I'm stuck at an airport or something.

For podcasts, it's ruined.

Can't change the speed (previously you could set it to 1/2, 1 or 2x)

Can't get new episodes (without manually finding it in the store, there's no longer am"get more episodes" button.

No 30s rewind (very nice to have for spoken word.

It won't even play the next episode, after an episode finishes, playback just stops. You have to manually pick the next show.

Doesn't show the number of new episodes or total episodes.

No lyric support (show notes are very nice to have in podcasts)

I could go on. I HATE the music app. I consume a lot of audio on my iPad and this app is terrible. I'd almost give up all the things I like about ios5 just to go back to the old app and get rid of new POS.

I am hoping its an oversight and these will return soon.

Still can't get used to it after a week. Personally for me apple missed the mark. Hopefully in future 5.x releases they refine it and it does become more user friendly along with restoring some lost functionality. If not I guess I'll be listening to a lot more Pandora for the next year!

The iPhone app is largely the same as it ever was.

The iPad app is an utter travesty. Anyone saying they like it (functionally - design is another matter) must barely use it beyond pressing play.

If it was just interface changes, you'd get used to it after a week. If it was just a more complicated or different way to do X, you'd get used to it after a week. When they take out features and break an app, that's not something you can really get used to.

And I use the words features lightly, agin, it's not like these are major "back of the box" features we're talking about, it's basic functionality.

I honestly find myself using my iPad less now, because of the music app. Again, I listen to a lot of audio, and with such a terrible user experience on my iPad, it makes more sense to get out my laptop for whatever I'm doing (before ios5, the iPad had largely replaced my laptop for everything except work).

I noticed the smart playlist sort order from iTunes is out of wack on my iPad 1 with iOS5. This is all ok on my iPhone 4.

But looking at this thread I only found the tip of the iceberg!

Steve would turn in his grave...

I'm giving it a thumbs down too. It's very disappointing, especially since I used to love how the iPad handled my music and podcasts. I like some of the other aspects of iOS 5 like being able to switch between apps by swiping with 4 fingers, but if I'd known the Music app would be this bad I might have waited to upgrade since I expect them to fix some of these problems at some point.

Then I'm not upgrading. I'll stay with iOS 4 for a bit longer.

Good post op, while not exactly rubbish it leaves a lot to be desired the new interface, I second most comments here and I want to add what's worth the faux wood margins taking up the screen? Uggghhhh

Oh and guys and gals, please post feedback to apple, they read it, but they don't read the fora.

I too am an avid podcast listener, and specifically for podcasts, as others have said, the new interface is plain rubbish, as someone said they were not done with the coding and did not include the features required, what a shame...Indeed Steve should be turning in his grave, god bless his soul.

Well the iPhone app is almost the same… They didn't help themselves though from not putting their dirty hands on that too.. They changed the cover flow album stroke. Every time you tap on an album an awful white stroke line comes around it and it is missing the lower part.. How amateurish is that…

BTW I can't believe that they approved the current Music app for the iPad on iOS5. I believe that the UI design team of Apple is doing weed a long time.. Where the hell is the tradition and culture of Steve jobs . A tradition of curved lines and elegant shades and bezels on UI elements… The new UI designers are immature stupid opportunists.. I hope in the end the whole iOS not to look like a version of Android.. Shame on them.. God I am so angry...

BTW, to the idiots that designed the music app to look like an old radio. Here is a suggestion on UI design of the mail app in the future iOS6:

I don't know about anything else, but when I connect it to my iTunes Match collection (over 20K songs), it runs like **** on my original iPad. If nothing else, they need to update their library management.

Not that iTunes on a computer is much better with my collection - the amount of metadata they store in the unwieldy XML file needs to be trimmed down for speed.

Couldn't disagree more with you. In my opinion the iOS 4 music app was a complete failure, while the iOS 5 upgrade is everything I hoped for. It looks ten times nicer than the last one, which looked so premature with the side bar taking way to much space in portrait.

However the most important fix they did was removing the auto-full-screen disaster from the previous version. It was like every time you picked a song from an album, the went to this horrible mode where the album cover occupied the whole screen. You have a giant screen, and the ability to look at so much music at once, and then you fill the whole screen with an album cover that doesn't even have the resolution to look good. In iOS 5 this is gone, which is the key reason why the new app is so much better than the last one.

I agree with this.
You can no longer see which podcasts have (or have not been listened to). To get the new ones you have to do another search again in the itunes store - before it would list the new ones available from within the podcasts list. In many ways I wish I had not upgraded to IOS5 as the functionality of the previous version was better.

Sucks for podcasts on iPad. It does look unfinished.

Standard volume indicator in the center of the screen does not display when changing the volume either.

The artist browser looks good, but totally not functional. At least give us an option or have it triggered in landscape. I like the old text based list so I can scan quickly and find the artist I am looking for.
