Like a lot of other readers pointed out, the youtube mobile site on iphone is much better functionality wise than the built in app. You can for example view HD content through the web app on 3G while you can not do that (minus jailbreak) through the native youtube app.

On a related note: Why hasn't Apple bought Vimeo yet? Or a similar company? It seems almost too obvious. They could corner the market on mobile phone uploads if they offered a few interesting, innovative features. (Live streaming + recording on an online server just a press a way in your pocket, perhaps?)

This won't affect people wanting to use Youtube but it must be a big loss for Google and Youtube as pre insatlled apps like this must do very well. People buying Ipods, Ipads and so on probably discover this app.

However at the same time you wonder where Apple is heading with the Google maps being removed and this one. However it's good Facebook is being added.

One frustrating thing about the IOS and apps is I have a few old apps which don't work anymore as the developer has given up support for them.

iOS 6 Beta 4 Removes Dedicated YouTube App

Is this real life?
Let's get this straight...

The original MacRumors post has an update that includes an official statement from Apple acknowledging the app removal, plus there are 255+ comments to the thread, many which confirm the disappearance of the YouTube iOS app and yet you are still wondering if this is real life?

Really?

Good!

Don't even care if they come out with an App Store version or not, the mobile site works perfect. The app was brutal!! I'm surprised it too Apple this long to take it off the iPhone. Never used the app, the m.YouTube worked 100X better.

Plus the icon was ugly.

One thing I liked about the Youtube app on the iPad is that you could read and scroll the comments section while the video was playing in the top left corner.

I hope that the native Google YT app will have this feature, though I suspect it won't since the YT website (both mobile and desktop) doesn't.

This: http://youtube-global.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01/holy-nyans-60-hours-per-minute-and-4.html and http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2012/07/31/youtube-200-million/ are all you really need to know to realise why it isn't worth Apple's time or money to get anywhere near involved with that.

Epic facepalm -_-

Honestly, I don't get the loyalty to YouTube. It's just a video hosting service, as long as it works well and people can get to it, why does it matter if it's YouTube or Vimeo or something else entirely?

Not an "opinion" but a fact. Google went from partner to competitor with Android.

You seem as devoted to Google as anyone here is devoted to Apple.

Yes, I'm sure no one will ever be able to best Google in search. Ever.

Google went from ONLY partner to Partner AND Competitor.

I am technology agnostic - best tool for the job

And yes - one day perhaps - but it's going to take a long time for someone to catch up/beat google at search.

I don't really get all nerdy technical here.... but.... Flash is a container and H.264 is a codec.

Technically correct, but too much of a summary. That Flash container contained something other than Apple's recommended H.264 encoded video (some variant of Sorensen Spark FLV) which is why Youtube went on a mission to convert to H.264.

i think this change is definitely a good one if google releases the app soon. And if its anything like the native nexus 7 app id be happy. but doing this now isn't really that crucial of a move. i understand its a licensing issue but its just a developer beta so hopefully the app is out before ios 6 launches

Great, when will they get rid of the rest of the useless undeletable stuff, like Reminders, Notes, Calendar, worst of all Newsstand (since it can't be dumped in a folder)?

The uselessness of these items is debatable. There are some folks that love them.

----------

So...when are they going to allow us to remove the rest of the pre-installed apps that are never used, like Newstand?

Many folks do use it. That said I would agree that perhaps it should be optional even if that means you might lose some features .

Or at least have it invisible until you download an app that uses newsstand. Perhaps same for game center. Until you have at least one applicable app they are pointless

That would defeat the point of having them, though. They partially act as ways for devs and publishers to advertise their stuff.

I'd love for a toggle switch to hide select built in apps and newsstand, though.

No Biggie

Not sure what the fuss is about; the app was dated and the mobile version of access is better and a new app is coming from Google. Bye, bye Youtube app, long live new Youtube app.

Personally I'm a pretty heavy youtube user, and I've always used the Youtube App vs the mobile website.. Maybe not the biggest deal, but I've always preferred Apple's Youtube App interface vs the Mobile site..

Yes, I didn't use the app often, but it was very nice the times I did.

This is a stupid move which forces me not to upgrade my phone. If Google releases an improved Youtube app in the app store then I'll be totally fine.
