Legality aside, you should be able to download (if you can find it) and install the GM with no problems. The GM is the same as the public release, so your first update will be the 6.1 release.

Yes, but would this still require you to be a registered dev?

To get the update you would have to be a registered developer.

There is a very easy way around UDID checks, which doesn't involve jailbreaking or hacking. It's a loophole I thought Apple would have closed after beta 1, but has remained open through all betas. It'd be against the rules to post how to on here, but Google is your friend.

Ah, that was part of my original question, which I thought had been answered.

I read previously that when iOS 5 GM came out both developers & non-developers were able to load that without issue (providing you could find the relevant file on the web) as it is effectively the public build in terms of content. In other words, Apple removed the UDID restriction/developer registration.

As mentioned above, the device would then be subsequently upgraded as normal once the 6.1 release was made available.

For all previous GMs, there has been no need to do anything special (register as a dev, give your UDID, jailbreak, etc.) to install it on an iPhone. I've installed each of the GMs from 3.0 on my iPhones with no trouble whatsoever, and simply updated to the x.01 or x.1 when available.

OTOH, I've never installed any of the other betas, nor would I; I'm not a developer, and I only use/keep one iPhone at a time. I need it to work consistently, so I wait for the GM, but I am too impatient to wait until it's released to the general public. :p

Nice one . . . your last sentence describes me perfectly.

Thank you for confirming what I believed I'd read about previous GM builds & the removal of restrictions (seeing as they are effectively the public releases).

I suspect I will be scouting around for a link on the 12th then . . .

Seems like they added smart banners for more websites! (My bad if the picture's blurry or cannot be seen)

Actually Apple has enabled the smart banners in iOS 6 and it is up to the developer of the site to add it. Apple doesn't add them. At least that is how I understood it to work.

This. Although I would add that I'm assuming (as in the past) iTunes will require an update as well.

Ok thank you. Now, as stated by the poster above you, would you need a new version of iTunes?

No because Apple hasn't released a beta of a new version. The latest version of iTunes supports the iOS 6 betas and presumably the GM. If Apple were to release a new version of iTunes at the event, you might need it for the GM. Remember, the GM has never required you to be a developer in the past, nor have any of the iOS 6 betas. All you'll have to do is shift + update (or restore) then choose the GM IPSW.

I think the GM will call for a new version of iTunes. I think with the iOS 5 betas there was a corresponding new version of iTunes, but not so far with iOS 6.

Either way, wherever you're getting your iOS 6 GM from without being a developer, there is likely a way to get the iTunes version, if needed. But you can't discuss that here.

Ah, I hadn't realized that was different this time around.
Duly noted.

Thank you for the info. I’m not so much worried about getting the beta version or the GM. I was just curious about whether the iTunes beta (if released) will be required for the GM. If the final version is released 7 days after the GM, I’ll probably end up waiting for it.

It might be strategic to actually download the GM in advance and install.

Though Apple seems to be learning from past years, you don't want to get stuck in the rush of the server slam when the iOS 6 update goes live to the public.

That is true – and that is why I run the process when I go to bed such that by morning it is complete.

So here's my question, when does apple relay the aspect ratio to the app developers? Don't they need to know the screen real estate ahead of time so their apps don't look retarded?

That info will be made available Wednesday, and they have a 9 day lead to get things together.

But the general consensus is that the PPI won't change, so they only possible thing that would need changing would be to add support for screen length dependence. That means that most screens would just scroll more/be longer.

Plus, iOS 6 SDK has support for resolution independence in that it auto scales based on the screen size. So if your app is already compatible with the iOS 6 SDK, then it should be 90% ready for the new iPhone, is my understanding.

Sept 12.

The new iPhone won't be in consumer hands for 9-10 days after that, probably the 21st.

Early adopters always suffer a bit as everything falls into place. Within a few weeks, the majority of apps worth having will be updated. By Thanksgiving, if not sooner, any lag in app updates will be long forgotten.

battery life

Has anyone noticed that in beta 4 the battery is really good,I mean,I charged my iphone at 2 PM in the afternoon and by now at 2.30 AM the battery is 99%,this is insane,I played song for 45 minutes,I played games for 10 minutes, the iphone was conected to wifi this hole time and the battery is just 99%,by the way I have a 16 gig iphone 4 nonjailbroken with 10 gb free.
