Some of these changes look nice, but I'm not keen on the new 'Call' icon beneath the keypad. An updated 'Slide to Answer' is also welcome, but the current design looks a bit awkward and bulky. Otherwise I'm looking forward to 7.1, especially the iOS 6 layout in Calendar.

I just hope they revert the contacts layout back to iOS 6, and make the Music App icon less harsh on the eyes in beta 4.

Edit: Also, fix Notification Centre already!
whats broken in notification center?

whats broken in notification center?

The hour by hour Calendar list in NC sucks. It should simply show me what I have on that day, rather than showing a page of empty space. I also have the same issue with Stocks, which should use far less screen real estate. Finally, if I scroll to the bottom to the tomorrow section, it tells me that I have 2 events scheduled for tomorrow. Great! But what are they??? I therefore have to open up the Calendar to find out.

iOS 6 excelled at providing the user with at-a-glance information, so it's a shame to see it all be thrown in the trash.

I hope my post doesn't come off snarky. I have no issue with your question, just Notification Centre.

while the tomorrow preview hasn't really been improved, you can simply get a list of today's events now instead of the window of a few hours, so at least that part has been worked on.

Just installed beta.

Keyboard looks great.
Phone animation is cool and the round call button isn't as bad as I pictured it to be.
Animations are much faster.

Someone reported there was no lag when activating search from the home screen - I'm using a 4S and the lag is still very much there. It's also noticeable when activating control centre / notifications.. Frames are dropping.

Slide to turn off really looks out of place. The cancel button sadly makes me think of Facebook chat..

Roll on beta 4.

Thanks for the reply. I'm happy to hear they've included a list view, I thought that was only for the Calendar app. NC is still a massive leap backwards compared to iOS 6, but at least they recognise their mistakes. I just hope that iOS 7's NC is at the same standard as iOS 6 before they announce the next version at WWDC. Many people with iPhone 4's will hold on to their phones for a few more years, so it's important that Apple gets it right instead of abandoning them with a half-baked NC.

This would be perfect! Can't believe they haven't thought of that in over 7 years.

They probably have, but choose not to for aesthetic reasons. (As practical as it would be, lower case letters would give the keyboard a rather uneven look)

The visual changes are Great but did they fix any of the bugs?

My iMap email is still messed up and the App Store crashes all the time on my iPad.

Agreed 100%. Additionally:
  • Splitting information into multiple screens means you can never get everything in a single, quick glance.
  • Weather is a huge leap backwards, from a row of icons + temperatures for an entire 5-day forecast, to only today's weather in a very verbose paragraph of words. I have nothing against reading  but the iOS 6 weather display in NC conveyed far more information in far less time.
It boggles the mind that someone at Apple thought this was an improvement!

iOS 7.1

We've taken everything you've loved about iOS 7 and might it lighter. Made it brighter. This changes everything.

While I personally can't/won't judge a product before I have tried it (not saying that you haven't tried 7.1) you touch on something very important: Apple's communication.

Apple really needs to cut down on the superlatives. Save them for when they ring at least some truth. Everything about Apple, the products and the numbers aren't amazing, incredible, profound or changes everything. And most certainly never when they are spoken in relation to an incremental update compared to the previous incremental update.

It is tiring.
And it makes the truly amazing stuff less amazing.

One thing I noticed (may not be new) is that the sliders in the control center panel now slide a little when you let go "mid-change".... If that makes sense. Eg when you take your finger off they don't just stop dead, they keep going a little.
Happens to both the volume and brightness sliders.

Sorry for the rubbish explanation :p

basically the way they did it so far in 7.1 is that the view you select in the calendar app also applies to notification center, so you can have one or the other depending on what you select in the calendar app.

Whether 7 sucks or not is an individual thing. So, you don't like the flat look - plainly obvious.

Flat iOS is here to stay for a while, so you can like or it whine. Your choice.

And you haven't noticed that trends are very much rotational, especially in computing.

Correct.
I'm not young at all, but I like the flat concept very much.
Btw I think 7.1b3 is something like an "early beta" design wise.
They are trying different things , I'm not expecting all of them to be in the final 7.1

Sorry but the new slide to answer, slide to power off and the in-call screens are all extremely hideous. What's with that lone circle to call/end call right in the center as a tiny hitpoint?

i completely agree with you! And what the heck is going on with the phone app. It was so stylish before, now the overall look is ruined by those circular buttons, there is no simetry. Before beta 3 everything was perfect if you ask me. The only thing I was hoping for was they turn the option to make the font ultra light everywhere like it was on 7.0 beta 1. And if you ask me 7.0 beta 1 was the best looking iOS ever.

Isn't that a little... skeumorphic? ;)

lol considering they're not 3 dimensional at all, no, not really. it doesn't look like a keyboard, but it's really not hard to work out. each to their own though i guess

i think the animation when you answer a call is cute, how the button rolls to the middle, and i like the fading down as you slide the power button

Hopefully there's more to 7.1 than this, because these changes seem like something that could have been done over the course of two days, maybe three. As a 7.0.5 update this would be great (except for that tiny call button). But 7.1?? Meh...

EDIT: I take it all back. All of it. I just noticed right under the part about the call button that you can now choose to disable the parallax effect when selecting a wallpaper. This is the best iOS 7 update EVER.

Would be interesting if the capital letters on the keys changed to lowercase letters when toggling the "Shift" key. Then people wouldn't have to check the mode of said Shift key.

Also, if you use multiple language keyboards, instead of just a world icon on the language button, they should have the first three letters of the language so that you don't have to guess what language you are in. Also something they should have done years ago.

i'm loving this decision. the smaller button on the call app would help with mis-touch on the button.

I like it, less text more symbols. You grasp it much quicker.

I think they need to go back to more symbols, buttons in all honesty. My accuracy with iOS 7 since it's been all text labels has been poor compared to iOS 6 and that's frustrating me no end. Needing to hit things twice or three times more than ever with iOS 7, it really slows your usage of the OS.

I don't know whether that's general responsiveness of the OS itself or simply the fact that text labels are interpreted wrong positionally by my eye.

When my iPhone 5 was on iOS 6 it was truly a JOY to use.

finally... the Parallex can be turned off...

Its just seemed strange to tilt a device and see the wallpaper move.... cool and also confusing... Its supposed to be a static picture, it was in the past...

So, this is a good thing.

Apple also keeps changing keyboards/keys..

It already cheeses my off when I KNOW i come across an iOS6 app, because the keyboard is iOS6 keyboard, but then you see iOS 7 keyboard everywhere else..

Why Apple never forced all developers wanting to make their app compatible with iOS7 to use the new keyboard, i'll never know... Maybe a coding issue ? But Apple has a knack of "making it work"... In this case, they failed, giving developers to choose..

There was once a day I could have said "Apple is consistent" , This is no longer the case, as they drift further out to sea.

Looks like allot of complains over the icons, so its good to see some shades have been done. As for the "Phone.app" i go via Voip app anyway, as i use data all the time now. :) for cheaper calls, s i'm not that fussed.

The smaller dial button is easier to miss in less convenient situations and when using the iPhone one-handed, and the new keyboard look makes it look like Shift is pressed (highlighted). I don't use to complain, but this time I think some changes are sketchy, and I question why they were even made. Was there a problem with a dial button that was easy to hit?

Anyway, I think the Messages etc launchpad icons are improvements since I felt they were among those who were sticking out a bit, with a too glaring color scheme (I mean glaring even for the strong palette in iOS 7).
