Nonsense (Unless it's changed in 7.1)
Goto to Settings>iTunes & App Store and turn off auto updates, even turn on cellular downloads if u wish (upto 100MB I believe).
Do your research... Auto-update != Auto-download. There is NO setting to disable auto-downloading of sw updates!

Seriously?

Apple needs an OS update to support their own media streaming app?

Wow Apple is looking pretty bad these days. Why do they want people to upgrade so badly? I'm still on 6, and I'd use android before I ever switched to 7.

I would assume that if there is an actual requirement, it is the difference in how it is streamed. I don't know if there is any particular built-in developer shortcut to live streaming in iOS (because I haven't looked) but it could be that sort of thing.

Then again, it could be .apk's equivalent of a .plist saying "10.9 or higher" (if it doesn't already do this) in which Gruber wouldn't be lying as 7.1 would technically be required, unless you manage to bypass the requirements of running/installing the app app your phone that is.

Why do they want people to upgrade so badly?

Because this is an Apple-centric website and people are interested in the progression of the products.

Also, people assume updates will fix [insert real problem here], [insert imagined problem here], lower their cholesterol, and improve the toasting ability of their toaster.

Are you implying that it won't? I'm done with Apple if my toaster doesn't stop burning my toast after I update my phone.

yet they release a brand new OS every year with a brand new phone.

not unreasonable to expect updates to current os within the year then is it?
And it seems like that's what we are getting.

Its wonderful that apple want to show off to the cool kids with a new app but it would be nice if they fixed all the horrendous faults of the horrible ios7 like the incredibly horrific battery life. Please bring back Scott Forestall!!! Io7 is a horrible, horrible, horrible update...did I mention that it just really stinks.

Grumbling in CA.
Well, see why things are like when 7.1 comes out.

Phhpft, what's wrong with that ? 7.1 beta 5 runs better than older OSes on my iPad 2 and 5s.

If the app needs 7.1, it's probably using some new features there.

7.1 is actually a pretty serious improvement over 7.0, and having the performance and appearance improvements of 7.1 with the SSL fix from 7.0.6 would be really nice.

$20 bucks says we don't see the update tomorrow. Not trying to be a pessimist, but the more we want it the less likely it is to come out. So let's all pretend we don't care so it'll come out tomorrow... I mean, I could care less. I'm completely and 100% satisfied with iOS 7.0.6 on my iPad Air. It works great with 0 Safari problems!

Funny that iOS 7 is probably the most highly anticipated iOS release (at least since the App Store in 2.0), and 7.1 is probably the most highly anticipated bug fix update. I really hope it sorts out the crash/respring issue, along with a few other assorted glitchy behaviors that I've been dealing with since June.

Honestly I'm just glad that the page indicator dots on the bottom of the home screen will be centered again. That was just sloppy!

Honestly, I'd be okay with iOS Safari crashing every once and a while, as long as they fix my issue of matched iTunes Match songs skipping forward and going silent at random times...

The support community discussion on this is almost two years old and beyond 8 pages long now, and still no solution.

iOS 7 has got to be the biggest disappointment for me in my use of apple products. Which is too bad because a lot of ios apps are written better than android that and siri is better at commands even though she's a lot slower than google now. They ruined the look, ruined the notifications pull down and made some other things like calendar and reminders kind of clumsy and sounds like its buggy with the re-springs.

I thought Ive replacing Forstall was going to be great. Boy was I wrong. Hopefully there are big changes for iPhone 6 and ios 8.

I don't mean this as trolling as I own apple products and love them but the iphone and ios 7 are slipping. Still very good but I think pure android run phones have nudged ahead functionality wise and cost half the price.

I still have a soft spot for the iPhone. I remember buying the 1st gen and jailbreaking it the first night so I could use it on my network. I really hope they get it back on track but I'm not having a ton of faith with Ive at the help. He needs to stick to industrial design of the products.

the Music App STILL sucks...

the call screens got worse and the new designs is HIDEOUS...

iOS 7.1 still crashes a lot..

iOS 7.1 still needs a lot of work imo.

Only good thing? Faster animations.

Not sure on what device you are testing it but on my iPhone 5, iOS7 b5 runs smooth as a butter!!

Finally

My iPad air crashes on 7.0.6 with 3 tabs open in safari and Game Center crashes on start up every time.

It's all about understanding business models. The Nexus, at best case scenario, is being sold at break even, and worst case, at a loss. Google makes money when you use the device, or more specifically Google services, to target ads at you to increase its advertising revenue. Google's customers are advertisers and you are the product.

Apple's devices all have a healthy profit margin attached to them because that's their MO - to make money off of selling hardware. In return, you are the customer, not advertisers. So you're not inundated with advertising.

Pick your "poison."

I'm tired of this excuse of why an iphone is better. None of my google apps on my nexus have ads. Apple doesn't have adds?? Really? iad, itunes radio?

I don't have anymore ads than an iphone user does. Apps that are built for both platforms will have ads are paid version.

But you've probably never used a nexus phone and if you have you should know its not filled adds. It's just a really functional phone that costs half the price.

I loved having an iphone for years and definitely miss certain things but both phones have pros and cons but there are more pros for the nexus right now and the cons for it (easier syncing with itunes and not as good at voice commands like playing music) are more a mild inconvenience. Plus once I finally get around to setting up double twist air sync it should solve one of the problems. Oh and I miss the mailbox app. lol

That's just one facet though. Detailed user information is highly valuable to advertisers because it leads to higher conversions. That means Google can charge more and get more repeat business.

And Android is the perfect vehicle for Google to learn everything about its users. In fact, Eric Schmidt has been quoted as saying that Google knows so much about its users that they know what the user is going to do even before the user does.

Google can't get that level of detail from iDevice users unless they're using Google's services for everything.

So we get targeted advertising that we might actually be interested in? I rather those kind of ads that stuff I'm not interested in. Apple has your info as well you don't think they are at least sharing it with someone like the government you are naive. Deny all they want.

This is a day and age where user info is simply out there. I'm guessing most iphone users use some google service, or social media so there info is out there. It just is.

So basically, the Nexus 5 introduced no real innovations and is sold at near cost because Google will make it up by selling your information to the highest bidder, and that impresses you?

The iphone has been real innovative since the iphone 4? The finger print would have been good as a security function with NFC purchases but that didn't happen.

Nexus is simply just more functional at this point. The way the notifications and notification drop down work alone make it better than he iphone. I never realized how important that was until apple released that awkward three tab thing.

I was a die hard iPhone user and hated the early androids that I used briefly. The Nexus 5 perfect or better in every way but over all its a better smart phone than the current iphone.
