It's all about understanding business models. The Nexus, at best case scenario, is being sold at break even, and worst case, at a loss. Google makes money when you use the device, or more specifically Google services, to target ads at you to increase its advertising revenue. Google's customers are advertisers and you are the product.
Apple's devices all have a healthy profit margin attached to them because that's their MO - to make money off of selling hardware. In return, you are the customer, not advertisers. So you're not inundated with advertising.
