Short Name feature (first name and last initial)

I currently use iOS 7 beta 4 on my iPhone 4S. Has anyone noticed when you go to your messages and look at the contact you're texting, that you'll see their first name, but only see the first letter of their last name?

I'm pretty sure you have the option to modify this behavior by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > [Scroll all the way down to the Contacts section] Short Name > and moving the Short Name slider to the Off position (slide it to the left). Or at least that's the way it works for me.

Accesibility

there's a bug fixes in accessibility. the volume up and down now in-the-grid not like the previous betas where the icon is kinda messed up. and also they're renamed it from "Volume Up/Down" to "Decrease/Increase Volume"

Music

there's improvements on music app. when you select artist and play any song,it will play all the songs from the same artist, not like previous betas where they're limited to the album from the artist even we're on the artist tab.

when you go to Artist tab,you can play all the songs from all the albums of the artist you're playing. unlike the previous beta which you can only play from the same album even you're in Artist tab.
and also the pointer on the line runs smoother than before. and now when you clicked shuffle,it'll be boxed when you clicked in,unlike the previous beta that only bolding the words

Can someone test to see if you can choose whether or not you want to see "first name last initial" or the entire name? That's the only thing I'm not excited about.

Looks like the magnifying glass in the search bar in iTunes Store and App Store is gone. Also, tap to focus in Camera now shows a yellow square instead of a blue one.

Yep, just noticed that too.

The update to the messages app show the first name and the first initial of the last name.

In my contacts, I have:
Eric Wood
Eric Williams

If the messages app reduces the name of both to "Eric W" how am I supposed to tell who I am talking to easily. I think this update needs to be reverted, like "NOW" because that is going to cause a lot of issues.

Pretty sure you can turn the "Short Names" setting off. It's under settings>mail, contacts, calendars> under contacts, SHORT NAME....

Best improvement is fixing the bug that was preventing me from receiving calls from my wife. Wait...maybe that's not good...

Hmm, the WiFi icon is slightly obscured.
'AT&T M-Cell' is one of the longer carrier names (mine just says '3'). That and the wider signal meter - not much space left on that side.

- Indeed. That isn't very elegant. I use 3 (Three) as well and I always find it strange looking when I see such a long carrier name on people's phones, but the icons overlapping is definitely not okay.

Interesting thing about 3/Three. In the UK the carrier is known as Three and has the website three.co.uk, but in Denmark they are known as 3 and has the website 3.dk.
Neither 3.co.uk nor tre.dk ('tre' is 'three' in Danish) exist...

So, still horrible icons, still soul-less interface, still cheap transition effects.

Apple fan since 1986, thinking of leaving the platform...

I like very much the new flatter, minimalistic design. I always thought the iOS design was a little bit over-saturated with gradients, shadows, reflections, etc.

Now it's over-saturated with neon colours instead...

Pointless comment.

Pointless quote.

My goodness but that is some seriously ugly screenage.

Very Microsoft-like.

Swiping away notifications is "new" for iOS? Good grief...

I am sure Windows Phone had this feature for the past ten years at least

----------

In the notification centre, the notifications has got a new close button (like in iOS6).
Mails has got a new flagged section under the VIPs
You can scroll up/down in the Calendar Monthly view (I am not sure whether this was already in beta 3 or not)

I'm glad that the quick access button for the camera survived. Was a bit worried about. One of the best iOS features for photographers who need to be quick.

I did a comparison with a modern Android device (Galaxy S4) yesterday and the Samsung needed three times longer to get the camera ready for shooting (from standby to shoot).

Siri actually seems almost useful now.

And the voice is much, much more natural and less robotic than before. Still not there yet, but big improvements are finally happening.

I am not sure about this one, I didn't see it in ios 7 beta 3 - when you access maps (Apple Maps) when you zoom in/out it now has an indicator at the top, I gather it's like an indicator on how high it's above from the location you are searching on.

It is black and white in color and appears on the top left.

Note it fades in and out.

Oh, boy, where do I start?

That's a scale. You know, maps have a scale. Rulers have a scale.

Also, how does a marker that is perpendicular to your view help determine the height of the perspective?

I'm going to have to hold back here just in case that was not a serious post. Because, if it's serious, you're missing a life skill right there.
