I'm going to guess it appears when you have a certain number of artists. I have only a few currently and it doesn't have it.

I agree. For me no letters in artist view when accessing music stored on the iphone, but if I turn show all music on through iTunes Match then the letters appear.
It seems like it does depend on the number of different artists.

This has been hands down the least amount of excitement I have had for an OS. Both mobile and desktop.

Mavericks has a few small interesting features. Nothing earth shattering. Sure, I will upgrade but the upgrade feels even weaker then ML.

iOS 7 is just dull. Great features, lots of very needed features but man is the UI awful. Dull, boring and lifeless. For the first time ever, I have considered skipping an iOS upgrade. It is the first time ever that I hated an Apple interface this badly.

The look of the current iOS, to me, is beyond stale. It needed to be freshened up and I feel iOS 7 does that. I am a fan of white space and a very clean and balance and symmetrical look. iOS is right up my design ally.

In my honest opinion, the reception to iOS7 is going to be a lot like Apple's Maps in iOS6.

The process has gone in a similar way; a big reveal with very mixed initial reaction. Lots of developer grumbling about all kinds of things about the new design and APIs. Apple hasn't really responded to the complaints and although there have been improvements so far it's not really enough.

While it's been in beta (and under NDA), these issues haven't really surfaced. Based on what I can see, I think there's going to be a lot of negative reaction once it hits proper.

There's also little in the way of standout features besides the new design. Apple haven't really used the opportunity of remaking all of their Apps to add innovative new functionality.

I'm predicting a backlash against your post... how extremely pessimistic.

I'll personally give you an Android device just to make you a non-Apple user.

After using an iPhone 5, and seeing a very high amount of larger sized Android phones. I tell ya, I am really starting to want a larger device. Maybe a little smaller then the Samsung galaxy s4 but wider then the iPhone 5.

I have been seeing a trend of friends dumping iOS in favor of Android for this reason and the ability to customize. I really don't need the ability to change the theme, but why on earth doesn't iOS have an intents system yet ?! Maybe I want to post the picture I am viewing in something other then messages, facebook, twitter or email ? I want to use a "read later" service that ties in with Chrome since that is what I use on the desktop.

I really enjoy the security of the walled garden, but its a little bit too restrictive on interactive with other apps. Apple needs to loosen the death grip a bit.

iOS doesn't need to be #1, but it needs to be competitive and innovative.

easing the learning curve for the masses. At this point it's no longer needed imo.

Usability and accessibility. By having real world correlations it made it easier for people to adapt and learn to use computers.

Compare the original Mac OS to DOS. Which system was easier for most people?

He and Forstall just went to far with it. Some of it is great and invites you to use the app. 'iBooks' is perfect in my opinion. Other times, like 'Find my Friends' is just annoying. There's a delicate balance.

^^^THAT!

I hope its not the last beta, I still have major issues with syncing music.

I compress my tracks to 128kbps and when I do that, sync never completes. My last attempt I aborted after 17 hours at step 4 of 4 and then it had only transferred some 5000 of 12000 tracks. when I tried to remove them to reduce the number, I had 20Gb of "Other Data" which I couldn't remove without deleting all settings and contents under General and then restoring from a backup.
You have quite a lot of music, have you tried out Pandora? Try iTunes Radio when it is released. Personally, I don't sync all my music w/my iPhone, I like to find new music while on the road, so I use these more when not at home. Another option, go down to 64kbps, you probably won't notice a difference in sound quality unless you are an audiophile and also have an outstanding sound system in your car. ...In any case, I had some issues syncing my music w/my iphone 5 (w/iOS 7 beta), especially when I first put iOS 7 beta on. I'm hoping this will be fixed by the time GM is done (I also use the 128kbps option, but less than 1000 tracks here).

...It will look cuter than iOS 6. That's the way Apple is going these days.

From what I've seen there isn't a lot of new functionality, which is very sad.

For the first time since I bought an iPhone years ago I'm looking at alternatives.
"From what I've seen?" ...If you are going by pics and blogs and such, you are really missing out, iOS 7 gains much in the way of functionality. (People tend to be loudest when complaining and/or negative). ...But, wait until public release, try it out on someone else's idevice first, and also check that your frequent use/important apps are not having issues w/iOS 7, as some apps will need updating....

Erm actually it's only visible if you have over a certain number of albums/artists/songs (depends which view you're looking at). And it's always been this way. The threshold may have been increased recently, however.

Then it still has the capability, you just need to have enough artists to necessitate the feature.

I totally agree that the current look needed a major overhaul. I totally understand the recent "flat" design trend. But they want way too far with it. If you notice the progression of OS X you will see how its slower subtle changes over time. The gradients became smoother and less bubbly and shinny. I just feel they went about 30% - 40% too far on the flattening.

Hell, look at the camera app. Its a damn single color circle. It looks like a wireframe!

From whatever I've read and felt about the iOS 7, sure people are going to grumble about the drastic changes. But with time, they'll learn and stop complaining. Back in 2007, when Apple launched the 1st iPhone and iOS, my biggest complain was, how the hell does one operate this OS? But once I really started using it, it took me hardly any time to master it.

IMHO, reception to the redesigned icons has been similar to iOS 6 Maps. But then again, people will stop bothering after some time.

do you really need everything dumbed down? by now it should be clear where to click. like i dont even think about it anymore where to put my thumb on the screen. the OS could be in mandarin for all i care and id know how to navigate. thats whats so great about iOS, you dont even have to "know" it just works without thinking about it. i dont mind the texture but i can see how devs may not like it ^^
No, I don't need everything dumbed down. You see, I understand that it is not all about me. I am disappointed because I see there being a backlash from regular people. Sure, I could use iOS 7 but I will not enjoy it as much because it looks boring like every other OS. If I wanted boring, abstract and hard to use, I'd have bought a windows phone. Even if you like the aesthetic of that design language, you have to look beyond yourself and consider what is best for the platform rather than you.

because it looked DATED. the UI and the 3.5 screen of 2007 makes it look like a toy in 2013.
"Looks dated" is such an over used phrase by people who want change for the sake of change. Change for the sake of change is a waste of time and effort. If you want change, switch to another platform. Not everyone has that much money to waste.
i havent had an issue with iOS7b5 on my iPhone 5 at all. it feels like a finished OS to me. 3 used to crash a lot and some textures were off in german but its all good now
Great, you have not had any problems but you are running a beta as either a developer or you have a friend who is one. I also am a registered iOS developer and like to try out new things but that does not mean that I want to see all of the cache of the iOS platform destroyed for the sake of newness. Go ask some regular people what they think. Start by letting someone who has never seen iOS 7 to try it out without any coaching and see how they feel about it. You might be surprised by what you find out. iOS 7 is not as user friendly and intuitive as iOS 6 was. I really don't care if you think it was dated. I care about the average joe user, not you.

Honestly, I am extremely disheartened by the actions of the current leadership of Apple. I am worried about the future of the iOS platform and the company as a whole.

You see, I am not a fanboy. I spend the majority of my time on the windows platform writing software.

I like the idea of having the bottom row have an inverted color set of icons with maybe a light border if you put them on the bottom dock. That would be pretty sweet IMO, and then you wouldn't need the frosted dock, which i'm not very much a fan of.
More concepts, yes Apple could do better than what they're proposing actually...

I feel that there are still quite a few little bugs scattered through the OS that kind of reoccur from beta to beta. Hopefully this can all get corrected over two releases, but I won't be surprised if there is an extra beta thrown in seeing that this is the first OS to have so many changes to it.

it was predictive you know, but i am really excited about the final version, the best things are saved for the final version, and the 5s would just make iOS7 even better.

Hope they bring back the AWSOME panorama background feature which let you turn iphone left/right and pan through the whole picture. Had it in beta 4 but gone in beta 5. Admit it did drown battery like hell but is a super cool feature to have.

I predict that Apple will be forced to offer downgrade rights for the iPhone 5S back to iOS 6.x because I certainly will not be upgrading to an iPhone 5S unless if they either fix the usability issues with iOS 7 or offer a downgrade to iOS 6 on the new devices.

I said the same thing when Windows Vista came out. Wait, bad example. :D I said the same thing when Windows 7 came out. Guess what? My whole company is happily running Windows 7 (except for me - but I've always been the weirdo Mac user).

A button is supposed to stand out of the background. Text is supposed to stand out from the background colour. Thin fonts are bad for accessibility.

Have you SEEN an Android device?

I actually agree with you, but Apple is simply doing what everyone else is doing. And apparently, it's working. Google is killing Apple on worldwide market share right now. I understand that there are other factors, but clearly there are hundreds of millions of people who don't agree with us.

I am testing a Samsung Galaxy S4 right now. It's highly annoying that any light-colored background image produces a hard-to-read lock screen. But you know what? No one cares. I'm literally the only person in my company of 1000 that noticed or gave a flip.

I think you would have Apple develop for just the few people like you and me.

My next phone might be a dumb phone.

I somehow doubt that. :)

This will probably be the first iPhone release I do not purchase and will end up waiting until iPhone 6. It's not that I don't have the funds, but I'm just not in the mood to pay retail on something just to have the latest. My iPhone 5 does a lot and unless there's something truly groundbreaking about iPhone 5S other than faster A chip, then I'll pass.

I rather use the money for a weekend getaway.

True....but if some discounts come towards the holiday season, I could be tempted to pick up an unlocked model.

you are right, Apple could do better, but aren't they caught in the damned if you do and damned if you don't change the icons?

Seriously, what is the point of iOS 7? Why does Apple think consumers are clamoring for an Android-like UI? It's screen size and price that some consumers choose Android over iOS, not user interface. This whole thing is a giant head scratcher to me.

I predict the backlash against iOS 7 will be so intense that Cook will be gone before the end of the year. iOS 7 will go down as one of the all-time great unforced errors in the tech world.

Lol thanks for the laugh.
