iPhone iOS 7 Clean Install = Improved Battery Life?

I'm going to wipe the phone before the install, but then restore from my backup. My backup is only a month old so I won't have any problems.

Is it best to do the upgrade via iTunes or can you do a "clean install" over the air? Can I wipe everything right from the phone and then upgrade to iOS 7? I remember when Jobs said that we are now in a "PC free age". Is that really true or do I still need iTunes to do everything correctly?

Do you keep your app data if you do a clean install and manually downloaded your apps? If not how can you hold on to your app data and also do a clean install?

It is best to install via iTunes. If you develop battery issues resync w/iTunes and clear syncing errors
