On Android

This is called Action Launcher. Interesting that these ideas came up shortly after Action Launcher posted an updated version of their launcher with these features.

I don't understand how a concept design is considered front page news on these rumor sites. Create like a separate concept blog or post it in the iOS blog, but front page news? Lol.

This is a recent patent application filed by Apple. Seems more front page newsworthy than some random joe's iOS concept.

Apple Reveals a Virtual Home Button and a Cool New Way to Access your Apps without having to unlock your iDevice

Never say never. I'm not saying they would every use it but Apple filed a patent application for just such a thing. It may not be implemented exactly like this demo, but they did file a patent for a concept very, very similar to this.

Yes I know but putting a toggle button on lock screen makes no sense. Its similar to putting a shower-knob outside the main door of house (though one can file bunch of patents on shower design).

The best way to put those toggle buttons would be either in the notification bar - like android - which I believe Apple would not do. Or it could be in the bottom of app switcher area where they already have dedicated controls like music, airplay, volume, tilt lock, etc.

Well, I fall in the middle with this. I like some of the new ideas, but I can see how others might be a little pointless. I've seen some nicer implementations of "widgets", namely as objects that take up several icon spaces and present up-to-date information, such as weather.

Now, where I would see the "widget" mode that this idea shows as being useful would be if those widget controls could be popped up from the multitasking tray. Now, that would mean that you could get at certain information and controls for other apps without leaving the app you're working in.

Something that has just occurred to me is that with the big push against skewmorlhisms, I wonder if they're going to remove the virtual pages that you turn in iBooks. I would be quite upset if they did. Those virtual pages are one of the big reasons that I prefer iBooks to any other ebook reader.

1) Does this person not understand the point of a Lock screen?

2) The Music app widget already exists. Press the Home button twice then swipe right.

Yes - this would be a big upgrade</sarcasm>

Android Android Android Android Android Android Android Android OK we get it you love your Android. Most ppl in this thread don't care how it's done on android. I been there and done that and will not be going back to android.

Ah, no perhaps you missed it but I have a Lumia 920. I'm just saying this lame update, if it did happen, wouldn't even begin to catch up to Android, which I have already left behind for an even better system called, Live Tiles on WindowsPhone 8.

iOS is boring these days. Was great when it first came out. I bought the iPhone first gen, the 3GS, the 4 and the 4S. Siri is pretty sweet, but the phone is boring as heck now. I rarely even touch the Mini. I bought it cause it was 10 oz, had LTE and could read books and live news anywhere I go with it. But for the last few months I haven't even touched it once. It seems redundant for what I just do on my phone anyway.

Don't get me wrong, still have a MacBook pro with all the goodies. But iOS is boring. It just is. It's like a little better than Palm OS was but it's just a screen a bunch of icons on it. It's app-centric and today we're more social and people centric. Hence why Samsung is selling so well. They do new things and push the envelop. I had a Galaxy SIII and it was pretty darn cool. Lumia is better, but still I'd take Android over iOS any day.

iOS has become the lame technology now. It's the least advanced OS out now. Even Blackberry has better technology now.

All I ask is that I can delete the standard Apple apps that I don't want/use (Newstand, Weather, Notes, Stocks, voice memos, etc...)

Seriously, you have to be joking. Are you THAT simple? Just to quote you:

"Isn't it a bit funny that widgets were supposedly useless and unnecessary on Android and now they may be included on iOS? Anyway, I find it amusing."

Whats your "source"?

Obviously you cannot quote one single person who spoke out against widgets back then and is loving them now. your whole "isn't it... blabla" is irrelevant.

Perhaps I could, but I won't waste my time searching through dozens upon dozens of threads to find one person who flip flopped. Plenty of users have bashed widgets in past threads. I read this forum everyday and there is ample evidence of things that were useless suddenly becoming wonderful when Apple incorporates them. I merely stated my opinion. Remember the iPad mini? Remember Steve said Apple would never make a smaller iPad? Remember the iPhone 4/4S was the perfect size and Apple wouldn't make a bigger iPhone? The iPhone 5 is now the perfect size, until, again IMHO they make a bigger one, then it will be perfect. My opinions and observations are just as relevant as yours or anyone else's. You may not like them or agree with them, but I have the same right to state them as you do yours.

I think that the main problem with notifications is that they are different to the data in the app. For example, I get notifications for GroupMe, but when I launch the app, I still have to wait for the messages to be downloaded.

Another problem is that users want to be able to stay where they are, and still interact with the app that's sending them a notification.

My solution is for apple to allow apps to have multiple actions for notifications that the user can perform at any time. When a notification is received, it will go away if the user doesn't interact with it, but if the user wishes to take action, they can do one of two things: they can tap the notification to launch the app, or they can tap the 'expand' button and take action.

The thing is sometimes you dont need to use full functionality of an app. You just need to use a portion of it. It is very useful. You may not like widgets but a lot of people find great use in them.

I have an android phone. I'm not too big on them. I only use the weather and google widget. But some of my friends have loads of widgets.

Zooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom, what was that? Oh, the point I made missing you by miles.

I didn't say I don't like widgets. I said this implementation of widgets is flawed. What's the point in having to tap to get a summary, when you can tap to get a full functioning app? The widget should show you a summary without you needing to do anything.

Some things were quite interesting, especially the homescreen ideas. But we all know skeuomorphism is going away so the stuff like Calendar and Shelf won't happen, at least not looking like that.

Trademarks could apply to the icons, and some of the "look and feel" aspects of it.

...which are mostly based around Apple's core designs for iOS, so even then there's not much he could do.

And we're assuming the Youtube guy applied for a trademark in the first place... right?

Or is this Youtube video prior art if it ever appeared in court?

Go Apple I dare you!!!!

After suing and making Samsung change it's operating system over things like 'the circumference of the external corners of icons... Put widgets for a mobile on the home and locks screens and watch Samsung put a cap in your ass!!!!

By suing so quickly and having no flexibility you've pinned yourselves into a blooming big corner

apple can come with something a lot much better than this ******

Samsung has a patent on widgets?

iOS 7 will be mind-controlled.

You just need to think of it, and it happens.

But seriously... I should take out a patent on that...

Well, we're all kinda going off what that one guy said about Apple not being able to use any of these designs cuz dude guy could potentially sue them. I don't think he would, but we're talking about what would happen were he to try.

The best bet is to wait till junes wwdc, if there is one, to see if ios 7 holds up to expectations
