Wait, are you saying that it doesn't look like it?

No, not really. The only two things they have in common are that they both have text and they both have white. Other than that they are hugely drastic designs.

I agree with the OP. IMO it's change for change's sake. Some folks do like it better, but mostly just because it's different. If you presented 6 and 7 to people who had never seen either, I bet they'd overwhelmingly prefer 6. Just my opinion of course.

That said, the new functionality is really great, and that's what I care about most (by far). So I'll deal with the lifeless design and enjoy the new features.
That's pretty much what it will come down to for a lot of people (note, I'm not saying for everyone or even the majority, just a lot of people).

So true. Very few people would pick 7 over 6 if had never seen either. Best way put so far.

Well, you have to keep in mind that it's the way things are presented. It's predominantly white, not just has white. It's predominantly text and some lines, and not just has text. And don't forget the blue "links"/"buttons". So, given that the included screenshot of the Mail client, as an example, all those items are pretty much the only things on that screenshot, certainly making it look like the comparison screenshot. We are not talking about exact comparisons, we are talking about looking like something.

Anyway, I agree on the too much white. Maybe have a "night mode" option that changes the applications base white background to dark grey and vice versa. I dont know....

I don't like the all-white, but I wouldn't want all-dark, either. There are currently many apps with a night mode, including iBooks, and I never like any of them. What I want is white or very light colored background for the content, grey or blue background for buttons and other UI elements.

In other words, I think iOS 6 looked perfect, perhaps it needed a little touching up here and there, but not a complete overhaul.

iOS 6 and below looks like something from 1995 compared to this.

None of the elements in iOS 7 looks like they're from 1995 what are you going on about?

It looks boring, plain, and ugly. Apple could have had a flat OS that looked way better than that...................................... I honestly feel like people are defending it BECAUSE it's Apple. There is no way in hell people honestly think that looks good. It's like people are trying so hard to like it. I uninstalled it from my phone because it was so ugly. I'm usually enthusiastic about change, but holy ****, iOS 7 looks like absolute crap.

Ok then, so they both look like Facebook, and all of THOSE look like Google+, and ALL OF THOSE look like Android, and ALL OF THOSE look like MacRumors, and ALL OF THOSE look like...

There are almost no similar elements between ANY OF THOSE (the two screenshots included) except for VERY very very basic elements that EVERYTHING has.

If you're comparing that they're both white then yeah they look similar, but so does a blank sheet of paper. At the most, they are vaguely vaguely similar, and even that is pushing it.

I think it looks good. If Microsoft made it I'd think it looks good, if Samsung made it, I'd think it looks good.

I don't care who makes it. I dislike Android but it has UI elements that I think are really good looking. I don't like Samsung at all but the new ATIV PCs look stunning.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's impossible for anybody else to. You aren't a god, you know.

Take one, put it next to the other, and a majority of people will say that one looks like the other. If you don't agree, that's fine, but with everything you said about it it pretty much comes down to "not seeing the forest for the trees" in your case.

No they won't. They have completely different design elements. Do I need to draw it out for you?

No need, it seems we've already exhausted pretty much everything that could/should be established from that comparison.

Its amazing now many people give a **** about the design and how 'good' it looks (which is really subjective and opinionated anyway). I buy devices on functionality and price.

iOS 7, to be honest, I rather like the look of it. It does incorporate a lot of Windows Phone and Android design elements and it looks fresh. But if I had an iPhone, I'd probably be more concerned over new features rather than new look. A fresh coat of paint helps a house, but doesn't make it any better a place to live in.

Of course functionality trumps the looks but following your example, lets say that the "fresh coat of paint" was bright orange (not that iOS 7 is bright orange mind you!) and you had to live with it for at least a year, you'd rethink the option to buy that house and would look at others with similar functionality.

There's more to how good it looks (which can be the case when it comes to simple look of icons, for example), but when it comes to usability and user experience--those can and do influence things somewhat more.

Heh... you couldn't have picked a worse example. Orange is my favourite colour. If you have had said green however... :p

But I did mention that looks were subjective. Maybe its time Apple opened up some UI settings for once like everyone else. Allow people to paint their walls as such like you can on Android and Windows Phone. But to me, I can often leave a device on its default theme, layout and wallpaper without a care.

By adding colors and depth. Not that hard. For example instead of the top part of messages being plain black text on a white background which says messages. The top part can becolored lets say blue, because that is the signature message color. And the part that says messages can be in white font over the blue background. Each app can have their own signature color.Ex: Notes-> Yellow, Calendar-> Red, Clocks/timers->Green etc

Like this but with less bezel, ie a little more flatImage

Thats old iOS design. Have anything new and revolutionary?

I don't like everything apple does. I despised the iPhone 4/s and I thought iOS 6 was boring and on its way out...

You despised the iPhone 4/s and love iOS7...a re-reminder to myself that certain posters actually do not have any taste in design.

BTW, Apple stock down to $394 today (and the rest of the market was up). The preview of iOS7 has not done anything to impress the market...if the stock price is any indication at all, investors and designers with taste are thinking alike.

Its a beta and no new hardware for iOS is out. Any other financial advice Donald Trump?

There's no need to fix something that isn't broken. The old iOS design is fine. It just needs a little updating here and there, not a revolutionary overhaul.

This is how I feel about the situation.

It's like OS X, they established the style and layout of OS X when they released it all those years ago, and since then they have just made improvements everytime a new version of OS X is released, adding new features, making it faster, and making occasional GUI changes. But they never do a major overhaul, because there's no need. That's the way I felt iOS should have been, and it was like that up to iOS 6. But for some reason Apple caved in and felt they needed to change everything. Such a shame.

Imagine if they had just stuck with the old iOS design, but added the new features like control centre and got rid of the skeuomorphism effects. A few more tweaks here and there and it would have been fine for me. I was never the one crying out for an overhaul.

Tell that to RIM.

RIM had a system based on physical keyboard input, and failed to come up with a usable touch-input based system until it was too late. That is, their old system had stopped working for them. iOS 6 was working just fine. Sure, there is a lot of under-the-hood improvements that was needed, but those improvements could have been done without changing the looks of the system. Plus, I suspect that with the time and effort they spent on changing the looks, they could have added a few more feature improvements.

I mean, people who like iOS 7 are laughing at people who don't like it for picking their system based on just looks, but what about the people who said iOS 6 looks old and boring, and they'd switch to Android unless Apple changed the look? Aren't they also picking their system based on how it looks?

Oh give me a break. They pandered to their base which wasn't enough to keep them a float. Apple is innovating and thats what they needed to do.

We'll have to agree to disagree. IMO, "innovating" by focusing on the looks is the wrong thing to be innovating.

I posted an article against iOS7's design a few pages back but here's an interesting article in support (somewhat, not totally) of iOS7's design. The gist of it is that there are parts of iOS7's design that will be even more difficult for competitors to copy and rip off.

That's what they did with Mavericks and it looks pretty good to me. I'm more excited about Mavericks now but I'm too hesitant to install a beta on my only Mac.
