This really is shameful. How do these problems slip past quality assurance testing? I mean, really! Shameful. There's probably a lot of engineers sweating profusely at Apple right now, at least I sure hope so because if they aren't it means they are over-confident and/or just don't care. This has affected a LOT of people unnecessarily.

Count me in that group of hosed users. No cell or touchID

Been using FaceTime calls to stay on top of things

I didn't say Ive did it himself. Ive and keeping him happy is the #1 job of the exeutive team. He was always Steve's #1 guy. He didn't like Forstall. Forstall is gone.

Cook's fault entirely. Steve liked Ive but not enough to fire Forstall.

All I can say is Apple QC is terrible these days. For a company that prides itself on delivering the best products in the market and claims it focuses on the best user experience, this kind of shoddy hw and sw testing is inexcusable.

This is just hubris, counting on the fact that you have a captive audience which isn't going anywhere.

How do you let an update like this go live without testing? Esp when all you have to test is 1 single device, unlike the hundreds of models Google/MS have to test when they do updates.

Steve called Jony Ive his "soul mate." I'm pretty sure he would've chosen Scott over Ive.

Either way, it wasn't just Ive that dislike Forstall - nearly all of the leadership disliked him as he was very difficult to work with.

I was able to restore my 6+ with the 8.0 IPSW file and everything is back. Once I downloaded the file, it didn't take long for the restore at all and it wasn't a destructive restore. Everything was still installed as before 8.0.1.

So I have to do a clean install?

It takes forever to restore from iCloud and the backup to iTunes doesn't seem to restore apps and photos.

The update was sent to carriers for testing days ago. Not sure how this wasn't found, but it sounds like testing was done. Maybe someday we'll find out what happened to cause this.

This honestly isn't even funny. I know some dumb people, but I doubt any of us here are really that dumb.

I thank you for wasting your time on my not funny reply. And wasting my type replying to you. I really don't care what you consider funny.

Typed from my 6+ too. If you can't have a little fun, why live at all.

1 single device? There are a lot more than one.

Supposedly Apple had already given 8.0.1 to carriers for testing last Friday. I'm sure Apple is pretty mad at the carriers right now...

That's the question - were they given a phone with 8.0.01 already applied or did the carriers try to do an OTA like end users would? If they took the firmware and applied it the problem would not have surface.

Plenty of blame to go around - I am hoping Apple takes this as a lesson for their next release.

You should be able to click option-update instead of restore, then select the ipsw, and not have to do a full restore.

But he's not the only one who didn't get along with Forstall according to many reports. According to Bloomberg, Bob Mansfield wouldn't take a meeting with Forstall unless Cook was present. According to the WJS one reason Mansfield decided to stay after already having announced his retirement is because Forstall was leaving. According to John Gruber Phil Schiller also had issues with Forstall. Ive might have been Steve's #1 guy but that doesn't mean he's Cook's #1 guy and Cook (and the board) make these decisions, not Ive.

Just read about this again a bit ago. Ive and Mansfield BOTH couldn't be in a room with him. It said Ive wouldn't meet with him unless Cook was there to mediate. A lot of them were against Forstall. Ive was one of the two that were most against him.

It is difficult to imagine how something this obvious slipped by their QC.
