Steve called Jony Ive his "soul mate." I'm pretty sure he would've chosen Scott over Ive.

Either way, it wasn't just Ive that dislike Forstall - nearly all of the leadership disliked him as he was very difficult to work with.

Zero doubt that Steve would keep Ive over Forstall. I've read reports Steve "put up with" Forstall.

Steve didn't fire Forstall. I doubt Steve would have entertained an ultimatum.

I'm getting the error "iPhone 'iPhone' could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (3004)" when it tries to verify the 8.0 ipsw (iphone 6, so 12A365). Anyone else?

Lovely. I started the update on my iPhone 6 and saw this. switched it to Airplane Mode. Will it time out on its own, or is there some way to abort/cancel the download.

Maybe it's a good thing that I haven't been able to update my iPad Air or iPad 3 yet. The download fails repeatedly.

Just FYI, you don't have to put your phone in Airplane mode... just shut off WiFi. OTA iOS updates won't/can't happen over a cellular signal.

So if one ran the OTA and *bricked* the phone, then you can't try an iTunes restore because Apple have invalidated 8.0.1?

UK iPhone 6+ with 8.0.1 updated OTA, it broke the Touch ID and phone service.

I did try downloading the 8.0.1 ipsw file, but Apple invalidated that as I was about to use it, so that didn't work.

So I downloaded the 8.0 ipsw file, used the shift and check for update (Windows 8.1), and reinstalled 8.0 over the top of 8.0.1. My phone is now working perfectly, no restore necessary.

I've written this up for iPhone users to restore back to 8.0, feel free to share it.

Apple has pulled iOS 8.0.1 from the Developer Center and it is also no longer available via an over-the-air download. Got iOS 8.0.1 and have had the Touch ID and Cellular NO SERVICE issues? Here is how to fix that for the iPhone by reverting back to iOS 8.0.

1. Based on the model number of your iPhone, you will be able to identify which iOS firmware file you need to download. You can find model number on the iPhone’s back cover.

2. Plug your device into your computer

3. Turn off the device by holding the Sleep/Wake or Power button and swiping it off

4. Hold the power button for 3 seconds

5. Begin holding the Home button without releasing the Sleep/Power button for 10 seconds

6. Release the power button and continue holding the home button until you get a popup from iTunes that your device is recognized as being in recovery mode.

7. Now hold down the (Mac Option/Alt) (Windows: Shift) Key and click on the Restore button. In the navigation sheet that appears locate the ipsw file you just downloaded and click Choose. Again, this will wipe out all the data on it so be sure to have a backup.

8. Be patient and wait for the installation process to be completed by iTunes

9. Once the restore is completed you can select your backup or treat the device as a new device.

Here’s another important note (which Windows users should pay particular attention to; also, this is something that only applies if the user chooses to look for the desired IPSW file on the Internet). Your browser may change the IPSW file into a .zip file. For example, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer does this, if used to download the firmware bundle. This doesn’t mean it’s unusable. Instead of wasting time switching web browsers, just rename the file to end in “.ipsw” and iTunes will accept it.
If you use iTunes, downloading is totally unnecessary, JUST DRAG THE 8.0 .IPSW FROM THE TRASH/RECYCLE BIN. if it doesn't show, just search for .ipsw
This is why I always do a "download only" with iTunes whenever there's an update, then I have the full .ipsw for previous versions of iOS.

Alternately, you could get the 8.0 .ipsw via TimeMachine, assuming you use TimeMachine backup.

I hate where the internet and forums have gone, have to weed through hundreds of reactionary comments to get to anything valid.

Went to Verizon because I had no idea others were also experiencing this problem. Got a new SIM card yet still did not work properly. Rolled back to iOS 8.0.0 and no problems.

Get your act together, Tim Cook and rest of the Apple team. Seems like Cupertino is in such a rush to roll out products / software that QC/QA is pointing downward.

This just explains that everyone doesn't understand that Watergate was a building name. It wasn't called Water and then someone put "gate" at the end of it. So this doesn't really explain anything other than the fact that people have adopted this ridiculous way of adding "gate" to anything that is some sort of scandal.

Yes, but it has been adopted and become the 'standard' suffix to attach to a scandal of some sort. The etymology of the 'gate' suffix doesn't matter, it's more of a symbolic and well recognised way of identifying or labelling a scandal of some sort. But I agree that it's just being thrown around lightly to anything, especially here on MacRumors since Apple's "Antennagate". :D

Review

Bought the 128GB 6+ to show off. Was not disappointed. People think I must be super rich to have spent $949 on an iPod Touch. Highly recommended!

The update was sent to carriers for testing days ago. Not sure how this wasn't found, but it sounds like testing was done. Maybe someday we'll find out what happened to cause this.

Try again, your technology partners (carriers) are not there for QA. At the most, their job is to certify that the particular update works with that particular carrier. There are 2 reasons why this is Apple's fault, 1: multiple carriers are affected and 2: other components such as Touch ID have also broken.

This speaks to the mentality of Apple's development and QA as a whole.

The last thing anybody should do is listen to Apple Support when a release is this new. They aren't educated ahead of time and can only make a best-guess, which is no better than most of us here could do.

The problem with a bricked iPhone 6/+ is that's it's not even heavy enough to be used as a doorstop or boat anchor anymore.

Since the affected phones are iPhone 6's, which came with 8.0, most of us wouldn't have ipsw's on our desktop.

Ive was Steve's guy not Tim's guy. There's no way Ive alone could get Forstall fired. And for all we know Forstall was a different employee when Jobs was there and changed after Steve died.

Forstall didn't deserve that firing.

Interesting hypothesis. Really, really interesting. It could be as simple as a couple of "flags" being wrongly disabled for some builds.

I hope they explain what happened — just because I bet many are curious. :apple:

The reason I have thought that is because celluar/touch I.D are two of the main things to disappear. No iPad at the moment has those features. Maybe they got mixed up some how.
