EDIT: for those having issues with the "option check for update" solution... i was also unable to hold the option key and click check for update... here is the solution: click on "check for update" first but HOLD DOWN the click on your mouse and THEN press option, that should do it... worked for me

So this happens on server patches on a regular. That is cause they are called hot fix. This was a hot fix hence the .0.1. This happens just never to apple. I do not think with or with out jobs or Scott or any one it would be different if they want to fallow the road map they have laid out. Simply out they went to big to fast on core os code base. I agree with many here growing pains. This was a nasty one cause it killed cell and Touch ID. I suspect this will get fixed and come back out. There was a patch for OS X not long ago did some nasty things they pulled it as well came back a few days latter smooth sailing.

This changed my future updating habits forever too. After this, there's no way I'm updating on day one

That's actually very smart, best to wait a month or two after a x.0.0 release prior to using...

That said, this was a big flub on Apple's part as this is supposed to be production software (i.e. a patch to production software)....there's a few things they just can't do and the main one is roll out a patch that essentially brick's people's phone's (and Apple's most profitable product).

They need to take their time, be careful and not rush...even though there's alot of pressure to do just that.

The problem for the iOS engineers is that iOS is necessarily tied to new iPhones, and Apple is not going to move their iPhone release date very far from the September timeframe since that is optimal for marketing and sales. I'm not excusing it because it's clear iOS 8 was in fact rushed and not ready for prime time, but they really are hamstrung by the iPhone/iPad release schedules, and to some extent also ties to OS X.

There's so much major new stuff in iOS 8, including Extensions (and third-party keyboards), HealthKit, HomeKit, iCloud Drive/Photos, Continuity/Handoff, Apple Pay, new device screen sizes and scaling, etc. Not to mention Apple Watch and I would bet you anything that some of the iOS/OS X people were pulled off of those to work on the Apple Watch OS. I really think they are just spread too thin right now, getting a little unfocused, and unfortunately, it's showing in the products and services.

It's definitely not too late to recover, iOS 8 can and most likely will be great, but they really need to get back to focused product development with comprehensive testing (before it gets in the public realm), and overhaul their perpetually dreadful web services department.

Exactly, Well said

I think many are being slightly unfair, blaming Apple —*as a whole company, identity, and brand — for a mistake that is likely to have been caused by one person's neglect.

There was one guy that messed up, yes, but a company in Apple's position should have more stringent QA policies in place to find bugs like this. It is absolutely justified to blame the company as a whole.

Welcome to Apple's version of Vista.

Ok, I admit it....I'm a troll but you have to admit this is not Apple's finest OS release. My iPad 2 reminds me of my old PC running Win XP.

Can i ask how you did this exactly? You downloaded the IPSW, I've got that now. then from iTunes you did hold down option/restore, and selected the IPSW you downloaded?

When you click on check for update you need to hold down the option key on a Mac or Shift on Windows and then it'll ask you to browse for the file.

As an update I'm thinking this was meant as an internal build or something. While I was away on my lunch break I noticed that I can delete all the built in apps and tested it by deleting stocks. I know that would make a few people happy. :) Also, the podcast app is just crashing on me. Since I have cell service restored using the iTunes method I'm going to hold off rolling back to 8.0 for now since I would expect a fixed build sometime later today.

Hope these clowns get their Thanksgiving holiday taken away. 2 freaking hours of my life gone restoring my phone.

I buy Apple products to avoid having to troubleshoot and deal with this crap and pay quite a premium to get that piece of mind.

Totally unacceptable.

Still Bricked

I've tried this from every angle - restore from ITunes renders no action but to tell me 'are you sure you want to restore' - then NOTHING.

dead in the water...

has anyone found a way to go back to 8.0

Why is it whenever there's a scandal they just add gate to it? What's the significance of gate? I don't get it
Because people are stupid and think they're being clever by slapping 'gate' on the end of the word, either forgetting or just simply not knowing that Watergate was the name of the office complex at the center of the scandal with the same name!

Or pretty much anyone else on the executive team. Sorry Ive isn't the CEO he doesn't had the power to fire anyone.

I didn't say Ive did it himself. Ive and keeping him happy is the #1 job of the exeutive team. He was always Steve's #1 guy. He didn't like Forstall. Forstall is gone.

On the plus side, I was able to get 8.0.1 onto my 3rd gen iPad and the lag I was experiencing with 8.0 is noticeably better.

Every cloud....

Download the iOS 8 ipsw from here http://www.iphonehacks.com/download-iphone-ios-firmware for either iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 plus. Then in itunes "option click" on update and select the update you just downloaded and it will UPDATE your phone back to 8.0 so no restore needed. Worked for me.

This worked for me, thanks! I previously tried the same process with the 8.0.1 update file but apple removed it in the process and I got a message that it was not the correct device (or something like that).

Did the same process with the 8.0 update file and it worked great.

First, it seems that the only devices broken (loss of cell service, TouchID) by the iOS 8.0.1 are iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+.

All other devices that were able to install iOS 8.0.1 are working as expected.

But due to the those issues, the 8.0.1 update was pulled and Apple is no longer "signing" them to be installed.

Those who are now trying to update or were caught in the middle of updating to iOS 8.0.1 and get the error saying it cant be verified due to loss of internet are not broken. This is just because Apple isnt letting you install 8.0.1 now. This will be the case with either over the air (OTA) or iTunes update methods.

If you are doign this OTA, then you can delete the update file by going to Settings, General, Usage, Storage/Manage Storage and delete the iOS update file.

There is question of those iPhone 6/6+ owners who only did the iTUnes update method before it was taken down. Seems those people are fine. Some iPhone 6/6+ users who did the OTA upgrade, only to have it cause the issues, then re-upgraded using the IPSW via iTUnes, reported it was successful, but others said it presented other issues (blank calendar, broken stock app, etc.)

iPhone 6/6+ owners who are stuck (like me currently) can use iTUnes to resotre to iOS 8.0. by downloading the IPSWs (linked in previous messages) and restoring, after doing a backup of you phone (to iCloud or computer).

The problem is I'm not at home and dont have my Mac, and even downloading the IPSW now is taking forever, even if I wanted to try to restore via my work PC.

But hope this clears up which devices are broken by 8.0.1, which arent, and what the errors people are now getting when trying to finish the upgrade since its been pulled.

Have you tried downloading the ipsw seperately and then alt + restore from iTunes?

I wish macrumors would ban the word "gate" from the site. bunch of unoriginal hacks here who run jokes in to the ground

Enough with the gate talk. Has this been fixed yet?

It's been pulled, that'll be as fixed as we'll get, probably for a couple of days - while they try to figure out what went wrong.

The folks that got in trouble will need to roll back to 8.0 (or finish the 8.1 update?) via iTunes (guessing there).

Those looking for a rollback process, here is example one for going from 8 to 7, but the process will work fine just going back to 8.0.0 (just use the 8.0.0 file, instead of the 7.1.2 file, for your phone):

http://www.iphonehacks.com/2014/09/downgrade-ios-8-ios-7-1-2.html

Here's the ipsw files for iPhones (8.0.0 is at the bottom, choose the right one for your phone type, it won't work otherwise):

Good luck everyone....
