So after doing some testing, I have found that the carrier update 18.1 is the culprit behind the battery drain on iOS 8.1.2 (*Note that by default of 8.1.2 it comes with carriar 18.0) and not the 8.1.2 itself. Since I'm on AT&T Network, ATT has released their 18.1 carrier update setting on Mid-December.

At first I couldn't find out why but I've searched on google about this and seems like quite a few have been reporting battery drain after they updated the carrier update 18.1. So there is nothing wrong with iOS 8.1.2 (Carrier update Setting 18.1 has been released after the 8.1.2 update so even when you factory restore, it will back to 18.0)

From my testing with the ios 8.1.2 with 18.1 carrier update, I noticed that I would go from 100% to 99% with only 30 minute of usage or less depending on what day. And after 1 hour of usage it would be down to 90%. Heck even it drops 2% an hour even without touching the device, which pretty annoyed me.
So last night I have decided to do a factory restore and set it up as a "New" and this time I have decided to ignore the carrier update setting and stay on 18.0. I can definitely say that my battery life is back to normal. With just 45 minutes of usage I can go from 100% to 99% (which is what I have been getting in the past). I will also have to test it tomorrow and see whether it does the same.

So I suspect that Carrier settings 18.1 is at fault here, well at least for me. But YMMV.

On my iPhone 6, iOS 8.1.2, the carrier update is the 18.0, and I have a very good battery life.

Which is exactly what I did with my 4 and 5 models.
Basically the dots show the very bottom of signal strength scale. 1-4 and you are in a weaker area and to expect variations of quality and speed. In a city near towers when it says 5 bars or dots you may really have a 10 equivalent. Something near -40 dBm. You don't know since the bars peak out. I know I measured it. 1 dot is closer to -120 dBm.

Anandtech's new bars agrees with my findings.

The point is that two users each with 5 dots may vastly be consuming different battery drains. And certainly someone at 3-4 is consuming more battery. The difference for me at home and in the city can be an hour or more or less usage time.

iOS 8.1.2 Battery Life

+51dBm would be +126mW. Not likely

The number that links is the -92 where the dots would be.

That is -92dBm...92 dB below 1 milliwatt. Although the number is not strictly RSSI. It's more complicated than that.

So yea I suspect the carrier update 18.1 is the issue. That is why I factory restored and went back 18.0.

I've been on 18.1 and doing fine.

Dear all,

I was reading this thread in hopes to find my solution. But now I wish to share my experience. If ANYONE has any suggestions, I would be extremely happy for the help.

So, I am too having the chronic battery drain in iphone 5s, the drain had started after the iOS 8 update, and in every other update in iOS 8.x.x the battery drain remained.

The drain is that enormous that my phone can last maximum a full 7 hours with the very light use of 1 hour. All the settings are changed to save power, and I have done all resets, reinstalls and started using phone as new many times. So I did everything there is possible to do.

Recently, I lost my hope and decided to install iOS 8.2 beta 3. And I have to say, that result is THE SAME!

Is that even possible?

P.s. with backup bot and apple help combined I have establisehed that my phone battery is at healthy 92%

For some reason iOS7 killed the stellar battery life I experienced from my iPhone 5 on iOS6. No amount of clean installs or 7.xx updates ever cured it, and my battery checked out fine. I never got to the bottom of it before moving onto my 6+.
So in my experience, these things can happen but it isn't comforting when others report no such issues.

My batt. usage on my Verizon 5s seems fine with my light use on 8.1.2 and carrier 18.0.

Forget about the settings: they are just going to cripple your device without any real improvement in battery life. If you are absolutely sure about battery health, and you restored add new, the reason could be a very poor and spotty network coverage.
Did you try, for a while, not to configure any email accounts? I mean nothing at all.

Actually iOS 7 strange behavior with iPhone 5 was noted since the beginning even by reviewer like ArsTechnica...

have you done at least 2 complete battery drains???

when there is a new OS installed, the phone needs to recalibrate the battery..... after a few weeks, i've noticed my battery lasting me through the day.. also on the location settings, i have everything off except for the apps that use the locations services only "when being used."

My battery life is terrible right now on my iPhone 6. My Usage and Standby numbers are exactly the same. I've done a reset on all settings. I turned off background refresh. What the heck!!!

Delete your email accounts, reboot and then add them back.

In your opinion is it worth to update the iphone 5 to the latest update? I am sorry to ask this, but since i didn t really find a thread here about this i don t really know.. Like i would like to know the good and bad aspects about it aswell as the battery life! Thank you very much in advance!

Some would, some wouldn't. It's very subjective.
If it helps, I would prefer that my 6+ was running 7.1.2

The iP5 is said to be a little laggy with iOS8. I had it on a 4s for some time and it was ok but definitely not as snappy as previous 7.1.2. Only you can decide if the new features at a little less speed is what you prefer over more speed and less features. I guess specifically look at the features you will gain and decide if those are worth having for you. Of course security plays a part too so newer iOS it typically more secure.

Hey!
I appreciate your comments and suggestions A LOT! I am sure that with such experienced minds I will find a solution to my frustration.

Could you try to disable spotlight completely?
I've done this right after the update to 8.1.2 and seem to have better battery life on my iPhone 6 then with 8.1.1

Yes I did, spotlight is completely off for some time and the situation is the same.

And this is also been done. Right after the ios 8.1.2 one of the clean installs I left the phone for a couple of days without apps, and once without SIM. Insanely it did not had any help to the battery, it was still dropping without use. But I will do that now on the ios 8.2 beta. And will let you know if this can be an issue.
By the way, I am using Gmail app for the email services.

Thank you for the information, it is news to me. Now I am using ios 8.2 beta 3 for 3 days, so there was around 7-8 charges. But non of them was a complete drain till the phone goes off. I'll do that tonight, and see if there are improvements.

I am attaching a sample of my battery use, of one of the lucky days where phone stayed alive for 7 hours.
Bluetooth is used rarely for syncing data for the MI band, and is not ON all the time :)

Refusing the carrier update is no longer working for me. I restore, refuse the carrier update, but it updates it anyway.
