It was answered in the iOS 6 thread a couple years ago.

I think your confused. While making a hotspot has been around since then, Apple made it sound like with iOS 8, you won't need a special plan from your cellphone provider to create a hotspot for just Apple devices.

No, you won't need a special setup for your personal hotspot from now on, because it will always appear in the WiFi menu and you won't need to authenticate. That's what Instant Hotspot is. ;)

Exactly. 4.7 and 5.5 are not one handed for the majority of people thus he probably wouldn't have done it.

And how quick things change. When the iPhone 5 came out everyone here was saying 4" was the perfect size for one handed use and now 4.7 is. ;)

I believe I read that Apple has a patent enabling the use of the home button as a trackpad this some one handed operation should be retained.

This is a new one

In messages the keyboard will keep its setting based on the conversation thread.

Example, I am speaking with a friend in Romanian with the keyboard language in Romanian, and in a a different thread in English with predictive on, when I switch thread the keyboard switches automaticly in my case from Romanian to English. In ios 7 the keyboard had one setting that was used system wide)

From AppAdvice: Control Centre might get customisable buttons http://appadvice.com/appnn/2014/06/hidden-ios-8-settings-reveal-control-center-and-lock-screen-customization-options

That'd be nice to see in the fall or 8.1

Air drop requires wifi! How can air drop work without wifi.. Both the devices need to be on the sane wifi right? And even Apple TV works that way. What do u mean "direct connection" .. I don't have an airdrop device nor an Apple TV, but I've read on apples website that it requires wifi

It's true that it does need some kind of Wi-Fi network, but it does not need an internet connection or an external connection, like a Wi-Fi router.

How it works is that one device makes its own little Wi-Fi network that only the other device is able to join. There's several technologies behind this like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, and Apple's Bonjour service.

Rather than rely on an already established Wi-Fi network, the devices establish a one-to-one connection. Think of it like a text message conversation (peer-to-peer) compared to trying to talk to someone in a crowded chatroom (network sharing). Not only do you not have to have a premade Wi-Fi network (the two devices make one with each other, kinda like one device makes a phone call to the other), it actually gives better performance too.

Your carrier must still allow Hotspots or you must have the hotspot option available on your plan, otherwise it will not work. All this means is that you can bypass the setup in settings, not get a free hotspot.

You do, this is just a convenience step to bypass turning on a hotspot in settings.

in other words, imitating the functionality of a blackberry trackball? Hmm, can't see any legal ramifications with that one.

Well you said it yourself Blackberry had a trackball then a trackpad, Apple is using basically a sapphire coated camera to simulate the same function and it's patented so I doubt Rim would mind

Aahaah ok thanx a ton!

Will the new quick type feature only be available for english users? I'm Norwegian, and the norwegian keyboard doesn't have the quick type feature :(

iOS 8, All The Little Things! [Features Discovered in iOS 8]

Yes, only 14 languages are supported at launch. I hope they add the Nordic Countries soon after launch though.

iWish Apple will add a option for requiring TouchID for switching the device off, and/or removing the sim card. Iwish the simcard could be memorized in the system so that if someone takes it out without consent, the phone goes into a lock mode asking for the touchID before it disables the internet.. So what I mean is, there are probably regualtions that cellular providers have with regards to the sim card, which I understand, but if the phone went into some sort of lock mode that just kept the phone online and on, then being able to erase the phone and data would be more secure.. I mean, i want my phone to stay online if it got lost or stolen, unless the batery drained of course, but in this lock mode, the OS can disable all batery draining services and keep the phone tracked.. Also, i want Apple to ad the option to require the phone to request a password or touchID to turn off the phone or if one tries to switch it to airplane mode. I mean, its the easiest thing to steal an iPhone if u switch airplane mode on from the lockscreen, or switch it off. Ive written down many ideas like this, but im gonna start posting it on places like these for everyone to see. Cause what are my ideas worth to me at the end of the day anyways? Maybe someone else can at least patent these ideas and sell them. People want more security, shouldn't this be a basic??

Are you sure?

I am 100% positive that I have never had the hotspot option on my plan and I can send texts from my MBP using the connection to my iPhone. Believe it or not I still have the original unlimited data plan from iPhone 1 and it works. The only thing was I seem to need to receive a text from a person not using iMessage before I can text them. After that it works all the time. There is nothing in my bluetooth menu or wifi menu about connecting to my iPhone either.

The day Apple ads Afrikaans dictation and Siri, thats the day allot of South Africans will start buying iPhone's.

That's something different. First is the personal hotspot. Did it work for you before iOS 8?

what you describe is the messaging (Contnuity) with that you can send normal sms with your Mac throu your iPhone! that does not need a hotspot.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but now if you open direction from safari, google maps open and have bar on top to quickly go back to safari, nice little touch!

No. Why would you pay $99 for something you will get free in a few months? I seriously don't get this at all. As others said, it's beta and had bugs in it. Me, I rather let the developers deal with the bugs, frustrations, and get them worked out. They know what to look for, and send the info to Apple.

One of the many reasons why I don't mind paying for an app. The stuff the developer has to go through must be a pain. Have a phone crash on you when you're trying to make a call or something. Any you just said your banking app doesn't work, so now you have to find other ways to do your banking.

I wouldn't fully agree with this observation. For many people, spending $99 to have a new iOS 3 months early is worth it. I'm not a developer, and I happened to be offered a UDID slot for iOS 7 by someone in another forum for free. And I feel lucky to be able to try all the new functionality and feel that I'm participating in the beta process by reporting bugs. In the grand scheme of things $99 isn't a lot of money. Hell, spend 10 minutes in Starbucks listening to the amount of money people pay for overly sweet coffee concoctions and $99 seems like a bargain

The only workaround I've found is to always have the mail app open. Notifications still don't work 100% of the time, but you'll still get the vibrate/new mail sound.

Not new. This was an update to Google Maps a few versions ago. Apple does not update or include anything in 3rd party apps.

That is not a hotspot.

A hotspot allows you to take your phone and turn it into a Wi-Fi base, allowing devices to connect to it and use the internet via your data connection.

Can anyone tell me if getting "green bubble friends" texts on iPad is functional yet in beta and, most importantly, **does it require an iPhone to be present to function?**

Many thanks! I volunteer teach seniors how to use iPads to communicate with their families this feature will be HUGE- but most are in assisted living homes and do not have iPhones...
