Am i the only one who thinks that iOS8 didn't seem like it had anything big or major other than the messaging app updates which are very good to get out of group messaging and all that, the pics update I am still unclear on? I thought all pics we take always end up in iCloud, lost me there. Did not really see anything else?

The do, but they only store the last 30 days or the last 1,000. You would have to download these to iPhoto in order to keep them (you also have them on your phone until you delete them). This time around, all your photos will stay in iCloud FOREVER. No limits on the number of photos or days.

BEFORE:

Multiple keyboards, WHY!? Apple's keyboard is perfect, Swipe is useless!

Widgets? What for? You can just go into the app, they waste battery!

AFTER:

OMG, multiple keyboards is fantastic! That Swipe thing is amazing!

I always said Widgets are awesome and necessary! I'm glad Apple finally invented them in iOS.

Anyway, with that out of the way. It's an OK update, the developer and behind the curtains updates are FAR more impressive than user updates. SDK and APIs are very impressive.

There is still no way to set default applications
Delete/Hide stock applications
No Data usage monitor
No Multitasking gestures - Zephyr
And most importantly, there is no access to files.
Getting everything would be great, getting some things that are perhaps more important and/or would be more useful to more people overall is still rather good.

Your mind is blown by things Android has had for some time now.

So? Many people here obviously prefer Apple/iOS for a variety of reasons. And that's okay. You like Android, other people prefer iOS. To each their own.

Yes, it's pretty good, no doubt.

I'm just don't like Apple's insistence of file obstruction. With iCloud Drive though, that could open up a bit.

iPad 2 and iPad mini non-retina are supported, but not iPad 3rd gen. Oh dear. Time to replace my wife's iPad.

No, the iPad 3 is supported - Apple's website is very confusing, as seen below.

Allez my iPad 2 - meaning no upgrade for me this year. :( Now sounds like a wise investment though, despite its shortfalls (poor screen compared to Retina models and rubbish camera)!

Looking forward to using Yosemite on my still-current iMac - phew! I honestly thought it was going to be replaced.

I am under the impression that the 3rd gen iPad is supported, it is listed on Apple as iPad with Retina, and in the presentation they said 8 will be available to all devices that run iOS 7, so your iPad 3 will be good to go! I also have the 3 and will now be keeping it for another year!

Sounds like things are being opened up. We'll see to what degree exactly. But it's still progress in the right direction, which is good.

Well, now I've just read some details about it and even though it's not a proper replacement for a file manager, it definitely is a step toward the right direction. It can indeed be useful if apps start to support it soon.
Exactly.

Predictive typing, quick reply. This is amazing! This is the release we've been waiting for guys. Awesome keyboard and the refinements we've wanted. Group messages and enhancements? YES APPLE. I WANT NOW!

There is an app called "Swiftkey" that already does the predictive typing. Voxer is an app that let's you send audio messages and it works across platforms (iOS and Android). I didn't see anything worth giving up my jsilbreak for. Although I'm getting the iPhone 6 so I'll lose jailbreak anyway.

I was not blown away. The only thing I really liked was the ability to use your phone from your desktop or iPad and getting the non iOS text messages on other devices.

LOL, yep! Had it on my S3 and SwiftKey was one of the best that I used. Still, it will be nice to have it on my iPhone and iPad. My mind is far from blown, but it looks like they are finally trying to catch up to the Android community.

This. Glad they have woken up and smelt the coffee. The Extensibility feature also straight from Android, many things in iOS 8 are in fact, I'm glad. :)

A lot of people will say it's "just" copying but honestly google copies Apple on some stuff and Apple will have to copy android on some. It's just the nature of innovation. You can't always innovate EVERYTHING

Exactly.

Btw, the iCloud drive works like a file manager except that it only works online. I don't know why they're trying so hard not to add a file manager by implementing various workarounds.

why does it have to be revolutionary? Do you really expect Apple to change the world every year? No company does that. Relax with the hyperbole.

Who said I like Android? My guess is the # of Apple products in my house exceeds yours and many others here.

Probably not, but I disagree - it's not the core features, mind you, that will make or break iOS 8 but rather the extensibility enhancements to allow 3rd party apps to integrate with each other much more freely. That will allow the developers to really make the platform rock.

This is how many industries have worked. And for those of us who use Android and iOS daily, this is just awesome, I'm glad iOS is getting more functional.

I was stunned to hear this, but then I checked Apple's US website (there isn't one for other countries) and realised it was true!

Perhaps Apple made a big mistake and the A5X and PowerVR SGX543MP4 aren't going to be powerful enough to feed that retina display plus the (admittedly rather minor) add-ons, which is really surprising.

"iPad with Retina Display (3rd Generation)" IS the iPad 3's other name, IT IS supported by iOS 8.

Actually, Apple copied Android on this. Again. Timmy can harp about how many people may be still using older versions of Android (due to keeping older phones), but those older versions are still by and large ahead of IOS.

Android is ugly. iOS looks better and I'd rather use it. Sure, it's been missing key features Android has horribly implemented... But now that they're there, im pretty happy.

It's called personal preference.
