There's more support here from the 4%ers than normal, nice. Count me too, iOS 6.1.3/4 on my 5/4S/iPad 2 until they succumb to the test of time.
-----
Did everyone but me throw their iPad 1 in the garbage? 4% for other seems low, no?
Remember, as the total amount of iOS devices increases, that number stays roughly the same, so it makes sense for the percentage to be low. Considering Apple has sold upwards of 800m iOS devices (as of 6 months ago), it's also worth noting that there's still millions of people in that 4%.

To hell with this poll...
They just forced the damn update download onto my phone when it was not plugged in but on WiFi only.
I was wondering what was draining the battery.

I never could understand this metric. Since all new iphones have come with ios8 preinstalled, and they're selling millions, the number is gonna climb since people have NO CHOICE but to use ios 8. Nor do those who upgraded to ios 8 from 7 have the CHOICE to downgrade if they decided they didnt like 8 (at least not without a huge complicated process).

The only real metric of ios 8's popularity would be people who chose to upgrade and were actually glad they did. So these numbers seem irrelevant to me.
The metric of "people who chose to upgrade" is irrelevant to everyone else. Developers and other people creating contents for iOS only care about how many devices run a given OS version, not which version of iOS iPhone owners like the most.

And on top of that, there's going to be a natural progression with time. Added, replacement phones, phones that had to be upgraded due to technical support and other unique reasons.

The metric is, I think, for app developers to know the install base, and probably to show that Apple is capable of keeping its install base up-to-date, at least to a larger extent than Android. Explicit, conscientious user preference is not the point.

Apple seems to have dug itself in to a hole. They have sold users on untethered devices and OTA updates rather than plugging in to iTunes. But they have also massively expanded the size of iOS, so installing iOS 8 required what? 5GB? And they went three years without doubling storage capacity. They are going to continue to see a lower adoption rate until storage capacity catches up to the iOS installation space requirement, or they somehow miraculously shrink the size of iOS.

Exactly. One more thing; iOS is now pushed to many devices involuntarily. You have no choice but to upgrade if you want your space back.

Health App Bug

I feel that my health app has a bug. I thought when you ride a bike it's supposed to calculate how many miles you ride, I may be wrong that it's supposed to do that. However mine doesn't and wondering is it only me that's it's happening to?!?!

Am I the only one that sees a parallel between iOS 7 and XP? That 33% number may be with us for a long time...

7 lost 10% in 1 month, XP lost 10% in 8 years... That's quite a strech there... The most likely to keep 7 is 4S and Ipad 2 users, everyone else will eventually upgrade. So, it will reach about 80% within 3 months.

So, you think they sold 10% of the installed base in 1 Month? (they probably sold 20-25M phones in that month, that's less than 10%) Even for their crazy sales that seems high. If people upgraded to 8 before buying their new phone, you wouldn't get any increase if they retire this old phone, only if someone keeps using it.

NO Absolutely do not update past whatever you're on. iOS 8 is the most horrible update Apple has put out. I'm on an iPad 3 and the thing is barely useable. Text input takes five to seven seconds to respond, app switching might as well have a beach ball attached to it and the battery life is much worse than in iOS 7. I've restored it to new three times and it's still the most sluggish device I've ever used. DO NOT UPDATE if you want a useable iPad. Apple for whatever reason is starting to make sure that their devices become borderline unusable after a single large update, probably to get people to buy a device that should work flawlessly for at least 5 years.

Funny have 2 people (my sister and mother) on Ipad 2 with 8.1.1 and its perfectly usable. You must have a broken down "special" product...

----------

I haven't upgraded my iPad 2 from fear it would become near unusable, but 8.1.1 is supposed to have helped some.. so, really, is it a good idea to upgrade such an old model?

Depends, some people say it makes it sluggish (before the 8.1.1) update, others don't. Its more about you than the update itself. Try a Ipad 2 that's been updated first to see in which group you fall in :).

Please enlighten me on how to go to "space usage and delete the update".
Can this be accomplished on a 7.0.6 phone with no jailbreak?

I believe that may be an iOS 8 feature, ironically. I've seen it done on iOS 8.1 but never had to deal with phones running iOS 7 so I can't say about that. It would be displayed as "software update" under settings > general > usage > storage (or whatever the usage menu looks like in 8).

You can delete the downloaded update as of 7.1.

I think this is a skewed stat. If you aren't savvy enough to update your phone, there is also a good chance you aren't using the App store.

Also, if you have a phone running earlier than 6, there aren't many apps available to you on the app store, anyway. That means there is little incentive for those people to even attempt a purchase on the app store.

There isn't much of a take-away with this, as it's also fair to say that if they aren't downloading apps, then you don't need to be developing apps for them. I'm just pointing out that this is all based on app store participation.

Or if you're like me and you REFUSE to update because you just KNOW that the next update will cripple your iphone. I still have my old iphone 4 running on ios 6.1.2 jailbroken. I will NEVER update it. I use it as a backup alarm clock. I don't care about apps. I just want my phone to WORK in case I need to use it as a backup phone.

Back in march I said "F" it to apple and vowed never to get another apple product again. Bought myself a galaxy s3, have NEVER looked back. Just bought a nexus 5 and let me tell you, it's just as buttery smooth as an iphone.

Android has come a long way. Ios is on the decline. Each new update is buggier than the one before it. Funny how android has had 5 major revisions yet ios has had 8 and STILL can't get anything right.

And Android has its own issues and bugs too. Let's not pretend there's some sort of magical flawless thing out there that is just pure perfection for everyone. Everyone simply finds what works for them, that's it.

So then... why are you still here?

I don't know if they've fixed it in later revisions, but both my parents and everyone here in college I know who has iOS 8 has had an issue where the keyboard won't show up properly. I'm afraid to update for now, plus there's only one little new feature I even care about.

Oh right... That flies in the face of every review ever written about Android, including the broken down 5.... But, hey, believe whatever you want.

I don't get it, why do these writers always point to "issues" as the reason for slowing uptake? The number one reason uptake is slower and will continue to get slower is the percentage of phones in use by business.

No sizable business using mail servers etc. will allow a phone upgrade until the IT department has fully cleared the update. In the case of our 6000 odd users, that took nearly 8 weeks.

So yeah, issues had some responsibility, but do the writers really need to be that shallow........

So that's 63% of iOS users with buggy iPhones.

Not me, if you implying iOS 8 users. It have become sort of trend around here to say buggy this and buggy that I guess. The only bug I have come across on iOS 8 is the one on third party keyboard (swiftkey)
iOS 7 would be more like Vista really, lots of people whining over nothing.

Exactly. Because whining gives people the much needed attention ;)

good luck with your new android 5 tablet. i mean really, good luck.

He will be fine with that. He can download an iOS 6 theme there and fill it with green field and stitching leather stuff :D
