I think having an X would be easier, but then swiping it away would look more Apple like and neater I suppose.

one shouldn't overuse the swiping.
we're still navigating a OS, not thumbwrestling our phones ;)

the lockscreen swiping, to me, looks kind of dorky. the small icon, the small slider and all that.

i'll take a little (x) to dismiss, thanks ;)

Yeah you're right. I would also take the little X.

I hate to keep pushing this, but anyone who hasn't seen webOS notifications needs to YouTube it. I don't have an agenda, but settling for an inferior notification system on the basis of ignorance isn't a valid excuse.

I'd be surprised if Apple doesn't tweak the notifications to push the screen down and add quick dismissal like MobileNotifier does/has (since they hired it's author). If not, then lets just say I really hope they add that in a future point update.

For those that keep complaining about a notification icon in the status bar to confirm if you have any notifications in notification center: What did you previously do to know if you had any notifications?

You can still use badges on your apps.

I can see the usefulness of having such an icon if you're within an app, but to be honest all you have to do is swipe down if your not sure. Because either your ready to deal with notifications or not. If you are, swipe down and take a peek. If not, don't.

If you forget, once you get to your home screens, you can still use badges to inform you of stuff awaiting your attention.

Baby steps people. 4.3 was a big step...5.3 might be just as big. Apple needs to polish all these new features and then add capability on top. While I don't see any harm in adding an icon in the status bar, I think the current iteration is leaps and bounds above what we currently have.

My point for the OP is:

Even if the notification pushed down the screen like in webOS rather than overlaid itself over the screen, you would still have the same problem. You are about to hit the back button but instead it gets pushed down before you have a chance to react and you hit the notification instead.

I will give that if you have the reflexes to stop yourself from tapping the screen webOS allows you to hit the back button w/out waiting for the notification to go away. But it does not solve the problem of you accidentally hitting the notification instead.

I think this is a bug in the developer beta and it'll be fixed in the final GM release, though I could be wrong.

I agree. If not, I suspect subsequent iOS releases will address this. Keep feeding Apple with feedback and I bet they'll fix it. They are pretty good about making sure they're OS is aesthetically pleasing.

I think that if you ignore a notification while the phone is unlocked, a little icon in the status bar should appear letting you know you have a notification waiting. This could just be me, but I often look away from my phone when its unlocked, and I have missed seeing the notification appear entirely.

I agree. I can understand how all cases are covered - either you pick up the phone and see notifications on the lock screen, or you're already using the phone and will then will see incoming notifications.

But some sort of icon in the status bar, even if it is just one to summarize all notifications that will appear when you pull down the notification window would be nice.

My problem isn't that my memory makes me hit it in a certain spot that I think the back button to be, it's that the notification literally covers up the button so I can't hit it. So no, if it moved it down, I would still have full access to the button and would be able to hit it.

No, what I thought you were saying was that right as you are about to hit the back button the notification appears and you end up hitting the notification instead (cause you said you ended up in programs you didn't mean to so I was taking that as you inadvertantly hit the back button).

I did acknowledge that webOS's version does allow you to hit the back button before the notification disappears. I agree that is an advantage. But... for me I don't think that's a huge deal that I'd say that the new notifications are bad (just that they could be done even better).

Personally, I'm not sure I like them cause for me if I'm playing a game having the notification appear while I'm in mid game preventing me from hitting that part of the screen could cause me to "lose" (in games that require more quick reflexes like for example Prince of Persia). So, in that case, I agree with you (least WebOS would let you adjust but you'd still have access to controls though personally part of me almost thinks I'd prefer it to just pause my game like it does now but I know depending on my mood I find that annoying too :p ). Well, actually, I think I'm going to like them but I think I will find that to be a problem at the same time. But, if you want your notifications to be somewhat intrusive (and I actually do want them to alert me that something has happened, and if I didn't I'd just tell the app not to notify me at all), there is going to be some intrusiveness in some way.

Honestly, everything has its good and bad points *shrug*. I don't think for pop up notifications I cared as much that they paused what I'm doing but I did care that they stacked and it was annoying to go through a list plus it was easy to miss notifications that way (and you couldn't go back and go to the other notifications, you had to pick which one w/out even knowing what the other ones were that you wanted to pay attention to). For me the biggest improvement was the notification center that allows me to go back and look at other ones I decided not to look at right away.

Nope, my problem is that when I go to hit the back button and the notification comes up, the notification covers up most of the back button, so I have to sit there and stare at it until it goes away so I can hit back.

Nah, it doesn't really cover it up all the way. I was just able to hit the back button from a sub-menu in Settings. Just had to be more precise with my tap.

Ah, yeah, I can see that. No way to try to tap right under it (I notice a little of the back button hangs below)? Just thinking at least maybe you could get away with that.

Other than that, I agree with others that maybe you should point that out to Apple. Cause while I don't think it's something I would find that aggravating (rather I could overlook it), I do think you have a point.

Yep, like VSMacOne says, you can tap it if you're real precise with it. It's still a pain though, or maybe I just have fat fingers. There's been a few instances I tried to tap back and hit the notification.

Yeah, it's definitely not easy to do it. I can see how it would be a problem with some people, or if you're simply not careful enough.

I think it would be fine if you could swipe up to instantly dismiss the notification

This! Like you are flicking it up into the Notification Centre to read later. I don't like the idea of squashing the screen at all, so a quick swipe up to hide the alert sounds perfect to me.

I still think there needs to be a little icon in the status bar as well to indicate that you have notifications waiting. Perhaps a mini version of the badges that sit on app icons, telling you how many notifications you have waiting?

I think if all of us send bug reports to Apple to fix the notification blocking issue and the lock screen notification issue, they'll fix them in Beta 2.
