'IP Application Development' Files for U.S. iPad Trademark

I still think that iPad could be the software suite over the hardware.

Sketch Pad, Legal Pad, Notepad.....

Slate for the hardware...

None of the rumored names have really grabbed me, and yet I can't think of anything better.

It really won't matter if the end product is as polished as expected though.

To quote my friend Rob at MaxiMunK.com:

"although i may wait for the iPad minipad...or the full blown maxipad for those days when i'm having heavier than normal downloads."

Horrible name.

So was the Wii, but sales of that thing still flourished. I don't know if it was because of or despite the jokes, probably a little of both.

I think it's time for Apple to give up the "i" naming convention anyway, it's getting old and sounding more a little more stupid each time it is used.

You're like the nine millionth person to make that joke.

Honestly, I hadn't seen that one before. But I don't read every thread on the topic.

I'm inclined to think the same thing... Or an Apple plan to simply spread misinformation... I think it's interesting the company applying for the rights is Slate computing... I still think it'll be called a Slate to avoid confusion with iPod.
LOL - either way, really looking forward to wednesday!
Not sure i'm a potential customer for a tablet (assuming it's a content viewer only) but i'd love to see what apple do with the idea... And how much they'll charge for it!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

IP Application Development = IPAD. Lol get it?

The name iPad isn't simiar to iPod, the iPad is replacing the iPod.

the iPad will have more sizes than you think, the smallest being the size of an iPod, they'll have an 8'', and 11'' and either immediately or soon after a 13" model. It will have a front facing camera, in the same position as the camera on a macbook pro's screen. The inteface will be more than a "hybrid" between the iPhone os and the mac os, but rather it's own very unique os, that is much "fresher" than the current mac os. The os will have an "spectacular" capability that will cause the iPad's os to become the blueprint for future mac and also some adaptation by the iphone os.

it will be able to dock with a mac w/ bluetooth, usb to be used as a keyboard, trackpad etc, positioned in the same place a regular keyboard would be positioned.

to be continued...

Sales of the wii were mainly because it was cheaper than playstation or xbox. The name still sounds daft but hey ho. I have to agree sounds like the ipad is a female product but what do i know i only just got an ipod.

Apple could just be covering all bases. No matter what the Apple tablet device is called, people will still call it iPad, iSlate, iTablet, Jesus Tablet, etc. It's better for Apple if they control those domain names if possible.

iTablet.com seems to be run by some cheeseball netbook company. Too late to get that one.

The real indicator might be discovering who owns iPadSucks.com, iTabletSucks.com, iSlateSucks.com etc. Apple might own all of them. But if they only own one, then it's a huge hint at the real product name...

This is going to replace the iPod.

the iPad will have more sizes than you think, the smallest being the size of an iPod. The iPod is obsolete. They will range in size from ipod touch size roughly, to 11-13 inches. They're not creating a name similar to the iPod, they're replacing it.

I had the same thought last week--but, I think it will all depend on the kind of margins that Apple can make on a line of tablets. The iPod is still pretty popular, last I saw it has 70% of the portable music player market or something like that.

Gruber theorized that Apple's tablet(s) could eventually replace the MacBook--I guess that's possible as well.

This is going to replace the iPod.

They're not creating a name similar to the iPod, they're replacing it.

Wrong. Bzzzzzzt.

Apple doesn't want to mess with the iPod name. They will, of course, continue to evolve the iPod family. Like they have been doing for almost 9 years now. For example: the iPod touch didn't "replace" the iPod line. It was added to the iPod line despite being vastly different and very iPhone-like.

The iPod name is too deeply embedded in popular culture. Do you think Apple wants to change the term "podcast" to "padcast"? Is Steve going to re-write that Wikipedia page? Nope.

Even if Apple did change the name of its pocket sized media devices, people would still call them iPods anyway. So why bother?

So we have "Slate Computing" and "IP Application Development" or "IPAD".

I think Apple may be trying to throw everyone off the scent with these company names. If the "latest creation" was the iSlate or the iPad then its strange that they would be trying to get trademarks using companies called Slate and IPAD - its just too obvious for Apple. Either that or the detective work being carried out by rumour sites is much better that Apple anticipated.

It shall be called - John. Or Robert. Mac Bob.

Mac Pad, iTab, Apple Tab, Booklet, John. That's the shortlist. Somewhere in Cupertino, somebody is hiding an envelope with the exact name on it, but only virgins are allowed to come close to it. Several Macrumors regulars should be fine.

I still think it's gonna be called the itouch. Just because other people think the iPod touch is already called it doesn't mean apple does...
