Maybe there are two tablets, the iSlate being the smaller one and the iPad being the big one.
Again, I will reiterate that there are no credible supply-chain rumors that encourage the presence of two tablet form factors.

If you read all of the recent supply-chain rumors, everything is focused on a 10" device. There is absolutely no evidence of a massive order of 7" flat screens.

I would Be willing to bet my life that the tablet won't be called "iPad". The obvious reason is because it is phonetically too similar to "iPod". Incredibly bad move from a marketing/branding position.

I called this on 8-13-09 on Appleinsider's forums: "I find this whole, will they release the "iPad" in September or will they release it in early '10 kind of stupid already. Here's what we know. 1) It's coming. 2) They've shot a commercial for a "secret new product," so it's coming soon."

For everyone who has ripped on the name, I honestly don't get it. It makes perfect sense considering it's an extension of the iPod Touch/iPod. It certainly sounds a lot catchier than "iSlate" or "Slate." The whole argument of "oh, they would never call it that because it sounds like a feminine product" is ridiculous. It will allow juvenile thinkers to go there for five minutes (of which I *am* one btw lol), then everyone will get over it and forget all about it, and reference to an iPad will become commonplace.

Honestly, by that logic, you couldn't own a PAPER pad, because omg, how can you call it that?! Come on.

It's not like they're calling it "iDouche."

Hmmmmmmm... allllthoughhhhh, now that I think of it...... ;)

I see a much stronger connection between iPad and Maxi pad versus paper pad and Maxi pad. Not sure why, maybe it is the physical order of the letters. Anyways, your argument is convincing, but I still think that name sucks. iPad? It just seems like a lame name for what will probably be a cool piece of gear.

And others see no connection at all. It would have never occurred to me, be like worrying about confusing an iPod with a pea pod.

Again, anyone with a drop of star trek in their blood has been waiting for their PADD to become a reality and if the rumors are true this device will be all that and more.

'Slate' speaks of antiquation - 'Tablet' makes it sound like a generic table computer. a Pad is great and won't make anyone with the emotional maturity over 13 think of a feminine sanitary napkin more the once or twice if at all.

I like Pad better than iPad. I say ditch the i. Don't know why, but iPad bothers me, but who cares, I'm not financially backing this venture. :)

As an AAPL stockholder, I AM backing this venture and I have no problems calling the device "iPad."

If I am wrong, I may lose money. If I am right, I may just laugh myself on my way to the bank.

Guess what I'm betting on... :D

Sorry, but the name iPad has been bantered about as the name for the Apple PDA/tablet since 2000.

My thoughts exactly. Especially in non english-speaking countries the confusion between the two would be immense.

"We believe it's likely that Apple is behind the IP Application Development company's actions, though no further evidence links the two companies"

There is other evidence in that the IP Application Development company also appears to use exactly the same law firm and address as Apple does in Australia.

Remember when everyone and their mother claimed that "Nintendo Wii" was the stupidest name ever? Yeah. Remember how poorly that sold?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.1; en-gb; Nexus One Build/ERD79) AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/530.17)

What happens if it isn't apple behind it?

Does this company apply for trademarks on behalf of other companies so as to keep things unlinked from the company after the trademark? (I hope that makes sense!) :p

The goal is to use a small startup for two reasons. First, getting through courts and regulators is easier because this is a small company claiming an unused trademark, so it looks legit and the big company lets it go when the cash is waved around. Second, it keeps competitors and the original owners in the dark that they're dealing with "deep pockets" Apple. When a small company wants an unused property for cash-in-hand most CEOs will jump.. unless it's Apple, Walmart, McDonald's then it becomes trying to inflate the value.. or worse the current owners start shopping the property to other competing companies like happened with some small outfits Apple wanted to purchase lately.

It's not an unusual tactic at all. Places like Walmart and McDonald's have whole teams of contracted real estate agents to buy up interesting property from farmers and abandon factories 5 years before it's "valuable" when a new housing or highway is installed. It's all about getting the "fair" price right now without the owner seeing $$$.

That all makes sense mabhatter. Thankyou!
