The name iPad isn't simiar to iPod, the iPad is replacing the iPod.
This makes zero sense.

They will be two separate product lines. iPod is an established line of pocketable multimedia devices, the market leader. iPad would represent a brand-new non-pocketable tablet.

Changing iPod to iPad would be confusing to the marketplace and adds zero marketing benefit to a highly recognizable trademark. It would be like Apple arbitrarily changing their computer line from Mac to Mick.

hmm, so there's still a chance that it won't be called the iPad then?
Of course there is still a chance that it won't be called the iPad.

Until Apple makes the actual announcement, no one here knows for sure.

While MacRumors is reporting a rumor that increases the chance of the new device being called the iPad, there is nothing in the article that says it's a done deal. For all we know, they could call it Newton X.

However, an increased flurry of worldwide trademark grabbing activity by a mysterious entity lends one to believe that this is a plausible course of action by Apple. It is likely that a major corporation is utilizing its resources in pursuing this trademark grab, not some random schmuck speculating on the importance of this trade name. It's one thing to grab a domain name and squat on it. It's something completely else to file for trademarks in multiple countries.

Apple almost HAVE to reveal a tablet now, can you imagine the crowd's reaction if they didn't? :p

What if the "iPad" is a part of the "iMac" family?

With the rumors swirling about the potential for a touch screen iMac I say that it's plausible. The price point it comes in at will be interesting.

I say that at $500 we'll see a 7" touch screen device with 32gb of storage, beefed up iPhone OS, subscription based newspaper and magazines and 3G service provided by Verizon (or AT&T). They could also throw in a 10" version priced at $799 with 64gb of storage. Beyond that, Apple will probably introduce a new set of iLife Apps designed specifically for the iPad. The invite is pretty clear that they will aim this device at least partially at amateur content creators. At least one advanced paint and sketch program will be demoed. Also the rumored iWork lite is a given.

A $999 a 10" screen "iMac Air" would be pretty revolutionary but unlikely.

Do not want.

Some people may think of "iPod" when they read "iPad"...

but for some reason I think of "iPeed" :(

Why is everyone against this name?

Mature people will never associate it with women's pads.

It'd be iPad as in notepad. Simple, no?

Cannot wait for Tuesday.

iPad Trademark also registered in the UK

On 21st October 2009 IP Application Development Limited
registered the trademark word-mark for use with:

Class 09:computer software; application software; computer software for application and database integration; software for accessing, connecting, developing and managing applications; computer software for controlling and managing access server applications.

Class 38:Telecommunications

Class 42:Scientific and technological services and research and design relating thereto; industrial analysis and research services; design and development of computer software

See the link to the UK's Intellectual Property Office, here

It seems as though there are now trademarks in most potential tablet launch countries...

I like iPad.

I never thought of a women's product until someone mentioned it on the forum.

iPoon would of been good though.

Why are we associating this with a Laptop again? I think using the Mac OS with your fingers is ridiculous.

Again, the tablet serves a different purpose.

Apple have been working on the tablet from well enough before the iPhone project for the iPhone to be a spin off of the base project they said as much at the iPhone launch. Indeed for all we know Webkit was a spin off of the project. This tablet project in it's current form could well have been running for 10+ years waiting for the tech sweet spot it needs.

It would seem odd to leave trademarking the name till after you've done most of the artwork for the launch event.

When we know the real name I think we'll be surprised how long Apple have had it registered for.

So everyone who doesn't like iPad do you think of a pod when you hear/read iPod? No, because it has been drilled into your heads over and over and over again what it is. The iPad will quickly lose whatever associations it currently has to become synonymous with the Applet Tablet.

Based on the most plausible rumors, this device would not have an Intel processor nor would it run desktop OS X. It is likely an ARM-powered device running a hybrid of the iPhone OS.

Thus, it is unlikely that Apple would market this device as a Mac or even a computer.

More likely, Apple will market this as a multimedia player and gaming tablet with a few lightweight computing capabilities, but not as a notebook nor netbook replacement. Without a physical keyboard and strong processing/battery performance, it is unlikely that it would be spun as a productivity or creative tool (office applications, Photoshop, Final Cut, Logic, etc.).

I doubt that they will release a 7" device initially. The most plausible supply chain rumors all state that the display will be around 10". There are no supply chain rumors of a massive amount of 7" displays being ordered.

My guess is that WebKit has little to do with the tablet project.

As far as I know, WebKit's origins are as a layout engine for the Konqueror web browser (Linux) in the late Nineties and Apple forked the code, presumably to create a browser for their next-generation operating system, OS X.

Exclusive photo of iPad: REVEALED

Who cares about the NAME?! I call my MBA 'My Air', my ATV is 'My Apple', the Mac Pro is 'My Pro', this will be 'my tablet/pad'.

That being said, "this is a heavy month, where's my iPad?"

As unfortunate as it is, the 'i' moniker actually makes more sense here than it does for most of Apples other 'i' products. I mean, the original iMac name was a contraction of "internet Mac" and this will be a Tablet/Pad/Slate/Book thats primary feature will presumably be its integration with internet delivered media and services.

I so want it to be iBook

Many of the predictions here could be seen a good foresight. Though lets see another view which I think hasn't been mentioned yet.
  • Slate is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash through low grade regional metamorphism. The result is a foliated rock in which the foliation may not correspond to the original sedimentary layering.

More importantly Slate is frequently grey in color especially when seen en masse covering roofs. ***However, slate occurs in a variety of colors even from a single locality.

Apple had a banner invite for this event. Within this banner were a variety of colors splattered ALL over. This could signify that the rumored "Tablet" could be introduced as a multi-color product (much like the nanos'). Now a diffierent path could be ONE single color which is grey, to truly represent the color of the device.

  • Pad could just be a variation of either "name protection" since they're "rumored" to release a tablet device, pad could simply be a protection against copiers.... Also Pad in certain definitions mean "Tablet of Paper" or "Dwelling, room" for those who don't speak proper english, they tend to use the latter.
