What is the fixation with female sanitary napkins?

As someone else said that never occurred to me at all until someone mentioned in this forum. A pad is a a pile of paper connected at the top, a PADD is a device from Star Trek with potentially similar forward thinking applications. A slate is a writing media from the dim past.

Pad ~ Tablet >>> Slate

Wrong. Bzzzzzzt.

Apple doesn't want to mess with the iPod name. They will, of course, continue to evolve the iPod family. Like they have been doing for almost 9 years now. For example: the iPod touch didn't "replace" the iPod line. It was added to the iPod line despite being vastly different and very iPhone-like.

The iPod name is too deeply embedded in popular culture. Do you think Apple wants to change the term "podcast" to "padcast"? Is Steve going to re-write that Wikipedia page? Nope.

Even if Apple did change the name of its pocket sized media devices, people would still call them iPods anyway. So why bother?

Of course, Apple could call the new device some variation of iPod...

kinda wish they would drop the whole "i" thing
Why?

It is probably the strongest and most effective branding strategy in the history of consumer electronics.

The average consumer would have a tendency to assume that any high-tech device that begins with a lower-case "i" followed by an upper-case consonant is a product from Apple.

The only thing that even remotely comes close is Sony's "Walk----" branding.

There is no way that the new tablet will be called "iPad" and I can't believe that so many people think it will be.
All of this "iPad" trademarking is simply Apple protecting their brand. Just like M&Ms wouldn't tolerate another company calling it's chocolates "M&N"s, Apple doesn't want another company coming out with a product called "iPad".
Plus, calling the new tablet the "iPad" would create a marketing/branding nightmare. Only the most innept of corporations would blur the lines between their brands like that.

Exactly. Thank you for articulating what I was too lazy to write.

You said it well. I'd much rather prefer the name Canvas or even iSlate.

Yo!

Has anyone seen this chiznit?

"iPad is a good name.

Less is more. The world is too noisy these days."

Agreed. More, the name capitalizes on neuro-associative conditioning. My 20+ years in marketing/advertising gives it a thumbs up.

Never liked iSlate. Sounds like a block on concrete.

This. 1000x.

Whether you like it or not, iPad is the PERFECT extension to Apple's branding. I mean, seriously, how many people have you heard call the iPod Touch the "iTouch?" The "i" is virtually ubiquitous throughout its consumer product line. As soon as I heard "iPad," it fully clicked -- I thought, "That's it." iSlate is just too awkward sounding.

Two final points:

1) iPad and feminine hygiene product jokes -- really? Grow the f**k up and get a girlfriend.

2) If you think that Apple is going through the trademark process "to mess with us," you're batshiat insane. In both cases, the trademark registration is being made by companies with names that are logical extensions to the product, so that any trademark disputes Apple potentially has in the future have a leg to stand on.

Put on your business hat...

OK, MacRumors. If you want to up your cred a little, why not put on your business hat for just a sec before posting these things verbatim from another unreliable source.

As an example. Apple filed for the iPhone trademark worldwide through proxy companies starting *five years* before they even announced the project for the first time:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone#Intellectual_property

Do you really think they are just getting around to filing trademarks just now for a product they are *probably* announcing in three days?

That seems rather unlikely, don't you agree?

Use just a touch of your brain power before posting this stuff please.
