u tellem. I am pleasantly pleased that that this thread was mostly populated by clear thinking comments by users who understand the iPad ecosystem. I for one have a difficult time going back to the OSX environment, but-whoops, Lions gonna change everything!

what about the rumor of a "real iPad 2" with retina display and coming in september??:confused::confused::confused:

Thanks :p:p:p:p

I will make it easy for you. There will be no new iPad coming in September, or anytime in 2011. Anyone who thinks Apple will release two consecutive iPad refreshes a few months apart from one another is on drugs.

Apple would not hold an event for 512 MB and a camera on the next iPad ... there is more to iPad II.
I feel you on this I don't think its retina display but they must be adding at least something extra to the OS before 5 to fight off the xoom

If the only difference in iPad 2 was the cameras, I would upgrade.

If the only difference was thinner and lighter, I would upgrade

If the only difference was the new CPU and Ram I would upgrade,

If the only difference was the new gpu, I would upgrade.

So yea I am definitely upgrading
BINGO

Wow, I'll take that as an insult. So since when did you decide what my priorities are? And what I want to spend my money on.

If he had the money, he would not have said that... I would find it stupid to upgrade because I don't have the money :D I don't even own the first iPad :D But if I had the money, I'd buy iPad 1 March 1st, and iPad 2 March 2nd ;)

I agree, the refresh cycle will be every year just like it is with the iphone.

Yup, thanks for confirming what I already knew. Apple loves people like you.

Actually, I have the first. And plenty of money to buy the second.

I just have the intelligence to not throw my money away thinking that im getting an amazing new product when im not.

Try again.

Anyone else wondering how they are getting 10.7 Lion AND iOS 5 out the door at the same time by summer???

Either they have finally beefed up the OS teams, or one of these will be pushed to later. If not WOW I will be very impressed!

Yay Apple, here's to CONTINUOUS CLIENT APPLE ECOYSTEM! :)

Heres hoping for this to be a plan, and somehow Mac OS 10.7 and iOS 5 will be linked firmware wise to maybe easily accomplish tasks, bla bla bla.

Why do so many on these forums feel that Xoom is something Apple needs to "fight off"?

Moto is probably going to sell one Xoom for every 10 iPads sold this year... Is that something Apple needs to worry about, let alone base their business and design decisions upon?

iPad 2 is so last week. Bring on iPad 3 already.

So agree...

But I will defiantly be delaying my purchase of an iPad for another year and using the money to give me 3 year old BlackBook a little refresh. I am determined to get a good 1-2 more years out of it! Hopefully though I can find an original iPad for sale cheap after the iPad 2 is released because although the features of this iPad 2 at least not from their predictions make me want to buy one I'd still enjoy having an iPad to use. Just don't feel like paying full price for what people think is in store for it. Plus I like the original design some of the mock ups aren't exactly my cup of tea by the way they look.

... So if the original iPad was "magical" where does that leave iPad 2? Where do you go from here?!?

I'm much more interested to hear what iOS 5 will bring to the table than I am about the iPad itself. We pretty much know all of the reasonable options for what could appear in the iPad hardware, but virtually nothing about what will appear in iOS 5- and it's iOS that will ultimately determine the success of the hardware.

True. Just not enough to matter. The screen is the #1 battery-burner for almost all uses, the CPU #2. Keeping the memory warm is probably less than wifi and maybe less than bluetooth.

The screen is the #1 battery burner when the device is on. When the device is in standby, the #1 battery burner is DRAM refresh. So you want half the standby life on your iPad? That's shorter by 2 weeks less battery life!

+ 1. The Xoom is going to crash and burn. But that's due to Motorola more than Apple.

If the Xoom came out at the $500 price point (or at least various models) and at a reasonable time frame, it would completely destroy the iPad.

Tablet competitors just need to take a page from Apple's playbook and do more with less (which may sound counter intuitive, but the average consumer doesn't care about specs). The Xoom, Playbook, and TouchPad all outspec the iPad (and from this, the iPad 2), but they won't sell as well, because these competitors over specing their devices makes the price point less enticing for the tablet shopper.

Sadly your entire argument that 1 gig of ram would kill battery life kills a lot of your creditably.
double the ram might cost what 1 min of lost battery life.

The big power drainers are Screen, CPU, and wireless.

When the iPad is turned on, sure. When it goes off into standby, the ratio of power consumption is a whole different issue.

How many devices have you designed that have nearly a month of standby time with instant on?

I agree to a certain point but I think more important than that is the App store. Until other tablets can beat the App store, they can't beat the iPad.

I feel that they'll need to fight off a strong anti-apple mentality thats not only brewing in the "nerd community" but in the mass consumer market it's not so much the xoom but what it symbolizes, the ability to make a good tablet thats not apple. Now the xoom as well as most of the other tablets can't beat is Apple low entry point at 499 ,the ecosystem , and no frills eco system that they may just expand with free mobile me.

Would you consider yourself a compulsive upgrader? ;)

I've designed computer hardware that's sold in the millions of units. Your credentials please?

This being the internet... I invented and hold 3 patents related to said invention a component that is used daily by millions of people worldwide. It is also fundamental to the success of the iPhone, iPad and all but 1 Android phone.

I have also invented a propulsion system that is a paradigm shift from current rocket based technology and will see 1/10th LS achievable with in a specified time frame.

I am also the author and publisher of 3 NY Times best selling books.

I also won a Gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and am on the Apple board in an advisory capacity.

It goes without saying that I am a modest man. I have used the hardware you designed that sold in the millions. It is because of the innovation and foresight you envisioned that led me on the road to my achievements.

You were a pioneer. I just followed

I'm doubtful

As well, as long as Apple still prevents full multi-tasking, ie. multiple full programs running at the same time rather than just a few specific processes, 1GB isn't really necessary. 256MB was limiting in causing Safari to reload pages between tabs, but 512MB should be enough to solve that.

I'd be interested to see whether iOS 5 will be a major revamp. Certainly notifications is due for a change, but certainly a UI refresh could be useful seeing the increased competition from Android, WP7, and WebOS.

It'll also be interesting to see whether the iPad will continue to be out of sync with iOS 5's introduction. The reason for the original iPad being out of sync was because the iPad was a secret so the iOS 4 team didn't know about it. But now that shouldn't be the case anymore with iOS 5.

As much as I agree with you, I doubt iOS 5 will see a major revamp in the UI. Looking at OSX Lion tells me that. Apple's making noise about how they're bringing features from iOS back to the Mac and some of that includes the UI features of iOS. If they do a revamp of the iOS UI, how are they gonna promote that?
