im totally with you on being skeptical about what this guy says. But he does have a point, I hadnt noticed it but he is right one side is very clearly more dotted than the other. Thats definitely not a printing error. So idk, although I find retina iPad 2 very unlikely.

i see it from the top of the "2" to the bottom. the bottom looks so clear while the top looks light and pixelated. i mean it could just be the way the photo was made as it does look as if they did it really quickly or it could be a hint. apple has put stuff in before we hadn't expected and they are getting a lot of competition from all directions this past year.

also im thinking mobile me announcement. they took it off the store today and people have no way of upgrading right now and they are doing work tonight to maybe prepare for the upgrade. also there was code in an early beta of ios 4.3 that talked about mobileme stuff. plus most of their events are an hour and a half so they need stuff to fill it up. ipad and 5.0 would not last more than 45 min im guessing.

my prediction

-talk about sales
-talk about ipad and how revolutionary it has been
-announce ipad 2
-show new features
-ios 4.3 comes with it, free download today
-preview ios 5 and what it has in store, developer preview later that day
-one more thing, mobile me and new overhaul

seems logical to me and there is nothing that i can see why they wouldnt do these. they normally do an ios X.0 preview at the end of march or early april so they push it foreword a few weeks.

EDIT: if you also look at the ipad invite the screen shows that line across it. maybe to represent an antireflective display. the "2" then fades into a clearer image maybe representing the transition to retina. if you look at all the other invites from past events they look so clear but this just looks pixelated until you get to the bottom half of the image.

a nice marketing ploy for the ipad 2 would be "hey, we're doubling everything we had from the ipad for the ipad 2."

i could definitely live with that. double the resolution, double the speed, double the battery life (haha, that'd be INSANE), and half the weight.

that would be a cool marketing idea if possible, but unlikely.

isn't that what they did for marketing the iPhone 2
"double the speed, half the price"

Apple would not hold an event for 512 MB and a camera on the next iPad ... there is more to iPad II.

Well, it has more than just that.

It has better speakers, I'd argue a tad bit better resolution, though not retina display, yet. It has probably light peak.

Anyone else wondering how they are getting 10.7 Lion AND iOS 5 out the door at the same time by summer???

Either they have finally beefed up the OS teams, or one of these will be pushed to later. If not WOW I will be very impressed!

Yay Apple, here's to CONTINUOUS CLIENT APPLE ECOYSTEM! :)

it sounds weak cause your thinking of that amount on your computer. This is a phone, individual apps generally only take 75-100Mb's. Thats true on desktops too even.

I have at least 1 app (djay) that crashes OFTEN due to low memory. We don't all buy $800 iPads to play angry bird games.

I don't see why everybody is so upset with these specs it seems to be in line with most other tablets and the only real thing its missing is the Retina Display(meaningless marketing tool) and to tell the truth that that rumor just got out of hand. However I am rather hoping that iOS 5 destroys Honeycomb and brings iOS ahead of the game.

See you say the hardware is equal to the other tablets, so what makes the iPad 2 special?

The iOS which relies on apps, which you can use on the iPad 1. So what the user want to upgrade to 2? Facetime? Gyroscope? Thunderbolt? The only "wow" factor would be a Retina Display.

When ever Apple has an event they always make fun of the competitors, either by accusing them of copying or poor hardware or something else. I believe that those that thinking of shopping for a tablet and they factor everything they will look at apps (which again why spend for an iPad 2 when 1.0 can use the same apps), hardware features such as facetime (which can only be use with other people with facetime) and a higher resolution screen (which I might add that no other company has in the pipeline).

I will hold off if the iPad 2 is basically an "iPhone 3GS". That's what I did when I got my iPhone 3G, I didn't think the features of the 3GS warranted an upgrade. The iPhone 4, I did upgrade and I love the higher resolution and quick response compared to my 3G.

I don't see Apple announcing iOS 5 at the event. iOS 5 will not ship in time for iPad 2, so they will not want to give consumers any hint that they should wait to purchase iPad 2.

My event prediction:

1. iPad 2
2. iOS 4.3 touted/previewed including demos from major AirPlay-ready app developers
3. MobileMe becomes free

iOS 5 will be previewed at a developer event at Cupertino in Late March or April (after iPad 2 ships) just like all the years before. I wouldn't be surprised if iPad 2 ships on March 18 and Apple holds an iOS SDK event the last week of March.

But the upgrade to iOS 5 is free. So why would buyers want to wait?

Sadly your entire argument that 1 gig of ram would kill battery life kills a lot of your creditably.
double the ram might cost what 1 min of lost battery life.

The big power drainers are Screen, CPU, and wireless.

Ram is so far down on that list that using that to scrap up better battery life is weak at best. If anything it showing yet again apple is willing to rip off its customers

Hello iPad 1.5

There is something wrong when a 8 month old iPhone has as much RAM as a new iPad model , or shall I say minor revision.

Your posts are always so negative

A week ahead of Apple's iPad media event, Engadget revises its claims about we can expect to see at Yerba Buena.

Enagdget's previous claims included an SD card slot and a "super high resolution" display for the next iPad. Those claims generated a fair amount of discussion surrounding the possibility of a Retina display for the iPad 2. The site is backtracking on some of those claims now, saying that "engineering issues" have caused a change of plans:Engadget stands by its sources and says we will still be hearing about a faster processor (A5) with more RAM (512MB). A FaceTime camera, of course, is still expected and likely a rear one as well.

The site does reveal that we'll likely hear details of iOS 5 next week which will be available to the public by summer alongside the iPhone 5. No other details there, but we should hear more on March 2nd.

Wait, let me make sure I understand this. Because they want to release the iPad in a particular month, and they can't get a hold of enough Retina displays in time or are having a problem running them, they decide to release an incomplete upgrade instead of waiting a few months until they can release a real upgrade? Why in the world would they do that? Is Apple seriously thinking they can milk people twice, once now and then again when they come out with the Retina display version, just because many have so much money that they don't care about spending it for two versions in one year? Can't think of any other reason. Maybe they have a point. Most people probably care so little about technological innovation that they buy anything with the label "new". In addition, "new" is relative. Millions bought an iPad two months ago for Christmas after all.

We don't even know when or what iPad 2 or 3 will have. Chill

You'd have to be pretty stupid to buy an iPad 2 if you already have the first.

(Assuming the cpu/ram are the only major differences)

Last I heard, the next iPhone was pushed back to September. Hopefully not.

Because none of the previewed features of iOS 5 will be available at iPad 2's launch.

That's not how Apple works. They don't announce products, then promise to update them with features months later. They ship what they have ready with a feature set that's set in stone.

This is going to be a big flashy (Apple PR at its finest) event in SF. They don't want to muddy the marketing signals.

Wow, I'll take that as an insult. So since when did you decide what my priorities are? And what I want to spend my money on.

If the only difference in iPad 2 was the cameras, I would upgrade.

If the only difference was thinner and lighter, I would upgrade

If the only difference was the new CPU and Ram I would upgrade,

If the only difference was the new gpu, I would upgrade.

So yea I am definitely upgrading

So within the 130 mW of power for the mainboard, somewhere within that number is the DRAM consumption. So the DRAM is some % of less than 1/10th the power consumption of the device.

Apple was being cheap with the DRAM decision. I don't really buy power consumption as an excuse since they doubled up the RAM on the iPhone.

You might have designed computer hardware, but maybe you're missing the plain details here about Apple and its general margin motivations.

These are just rumors. A Thunderbolt port would be awesome though...

If you invest in a new MacBook Pro

I'm thinking about selling my 2009 2.26 Ghz/4GB RAM/250 GB 13" MacBook Pro one that cost me almost $1400... You think it would still sell for that much?
