Ummm, call me crazy but I have a feeling the Canadian iPad will start at $519 (16 Gig/wifi). The reason being that the old iPad is discounted in the US to $399 and to $419 in Canada (versus the old price of $549). I would imagine the extra $30 discount-after the initial $100-is due to the adjusted exchange rate and the iPad 2 pricing will reflect that.

I have no insider knowledge, but that would just make sense to me given the adjusted pricing since iPad 1 discounts took effect. Really hoping for all of us who are looking to upgrade/take the plunge into the iPad world that this is what happens.

I've been thinking the same thing. I wonder how close to launch we'll actually find out about the pricing?

Uhm, does it make sense to include the pricing of the iPhone 4 in this discussion? I mean, if you think about it, the iPhone 4 in the US is 199 and 299, whereas in Canada it is 159 and 269. Maybe you guys are right.

I am considering going to US and grab the 64gb AT&T version in black next week (assuming there is stock). My question is if we are on vacation in US, can I subscribe to AT&T data plan for that particular month only? Do I need to go to any AT&T store or it can be done straight from the iPad2?

I have a 6GB data plan from Rogers but this is only good Canada-wide. I can use the personal hotspot feature on my iPhone4. Once I cross the US it will be better to get the At&T data plan during our stay in US.

What you think?

Yes, you can. I bought an AT&T microsim on EBay and activated it when I arrived in San Francisco. You have to activate it using wifi first, then you can begin using 3G. You can't use a Canadian Visa or MasterCard to pay, as an American address is required for authorization. However, if you use a Canadian issued Amex card, you can fill in any valid American address and the payment will be accepted, and 3G service activated. You should also be able to stop service anytime before you leave the States.

Probably due to the longer contract? US is 2yrs I think and Canada is 3yrs.

Yep, it is a longer contract (we're the "lucky ones" stuck on a 3 year contract. BS). But if I remember correctly, the 3GS was 199 and 299. Oh well, we'll see :)

Thanks for the tip on using AMEX... i have Costco AMEX... :D

This made my decision to get the wifi/3G version rather than the wifi only. i don't go to US often but it's nice to have local 3g data than use the data roaming which is expensive.

When you buy the iPad2, does it come with AT&T microsim? Also does the AT&T microsim will work on Rogers or do still have to buy a separate Rogers microsim?

i have a question that maybe some here has the answer to..

If the iPad I get in the US ends having a problem (dead pixel, light leakage etc.) will I be able to bring it into a Canadian Apple Store for service at the Genius Bar. I guess a related question is does the Apple warranty transfer to Canada as well?

Thanks

The iPads don't come with a microsim. AT&T microsims will only work in the States. If you buy your iPad at an Apple store, ask if they have a microsim available. If not, you'll have to go to AT&T to pick one up.

You should have no problem doing this at any Apple store or authorized repair center anywhere in the world. The Apple store in Buffalo, NY is actually closer to me than the one in Toronto, and I've had replacements done there before without any problem.

that is correct!

Apple warranty is worldwide so it doesn't matter which Apple store you purchased your Apple product.

awesome! Has anyone visited the Buffalo Apple Store yet? Any idea of what the stock is like?

I was thinking of a slight price drop solely due to the 1st gen iPad (new/refurb) dropping to within $20 of the US price.

The iPhone 4 I never understood why they felt the need to lower it.. But I'm sure it could be related to the longer contract (though carrier like Rogers has allowed us to upgrade every year so far), and maybe also the $35 admin fee when which nearly brings the price inline with 199/299.

From what I heard, the iPad 2 is pretty much sold out everywhere. I was thinking about making a trip to Buffalo this weekend, but I think it would be a huge gamble.

I tried the Buffalo store today. No luck. The guy was kind of short with me...well, not that I blame him. I'm sure "Do you have the iPad 2 in stock" is the only question he gets asked all day.

I remember when the same thing happened for the iPhone 4. I was almost feeling ashamed to ask the question, 'cause I must have been the 200th person on that day. Oh well, eventually, it's his job, nothing I can do about it.

Will you guys line-up on Day 1? I have a feeling that if they keep March25th, the stock will be very, very little.

Or maybe stock has been somewhat tight in the US because of preparation to launch in an additional 25 countries? I guess only Apple knows. But I'm sure they've planned it accordingly. Just seems that demand is high.

With the loony higher than the USD, we're gonna get hosed if the price is above $499!!!

I hope so, but I think not even Apple was planning to sell so many iPads during the debut. And the iPhone 4 lunch still comes back in the back of mind: I had to lineup at 2 AM in October (!!) to get one.

In October? Damn, you should have lined up on launch day and you would have been able to get one. It has been one of the most difficult Apple products to find after launch for several months.

My guess is $519 as well. See my original post:

I'm not sure it worth something but I registered for 2 contests to win an iPad 2 16Gb Wifi and they say "A $549 value" ...
