Teasing it out

I wonder, is Retina for this size display simply is not ready, or are they just teasing out the upgrades as a marketing strategy?

Whatever the case, no sale for me until Retina and 4G.

No better resolution. No thanks. I'll save my money for iPad 3. Looking at my iPhone 4 screen and then the current iPad, there's a huge difference in clarity.

i spend a lot of time surfing on the ipad. when surfing the text is all vector...so what would i gain from an increased resolution? practically speaking, what missing-benefits would i get that im not getting now?

I didn't buy an iPad 1 because I was waiting for my "dream pad":

7" retina display.

I guess that's never gonna happen :(

Perhaps with another manufacturer for now. I too would prefer a slightly smaller device. Though after using my iPhone for almost 4 years now I can't imagine going backwards to another non-iOS device.

Thinner...lighter...dont drop it.

So the better processor opens up my apps a split second faster.

More memory...OK..not bad

Same display...nothing about it being better for outside use.

Front camera...no biggie.

No reason to upgrade.

uh, who said theyre designing it to make early adopters upgrade? its the new year's model, w/ the latest feature set.

is the 2011 Mustang designed to make the 2010 obsolete? um, no.

Sharper, cleaner lines that are easer to read and easier on the eyes. Just look at the iPhone 3g/3gs vs iPhone4 for an exmaple.

3 things that iPad 2 will need to compete with Android

The iPad 2 may be in production but that does not mean it will produce something that we will consider "magic" or something that will "change everything" again when compared to these other tablets on the market.

Here are 3 things that the iPad will need to kill its Android's Honeycomb platform: http://goo.gl/9zD3H

never said they did...only gave my reasons why I won't if this is all you get.

Soo it wont even have a better res screen at all?

Its got to have a little better.

Sounds like a controlled leak to me. Dampen unrealistic expectations, whilst raising iPad awareness into the mainstream media once again.

Exactly!

I also want a better resolution for reading. But seriously, 2048x1536? My expensive-ass dell ultrasharp IPS doesnt even have a resolution that high. Apple doesn't specialize in miracle making. I hope we do get at least a small rez bump with a solution for using older apps included (some sort of window maybe?). Fingers crossed.

the res of the 13 MBP on a 9.7 IPS would suffice for now I think.

Okay I'll give you "Clarity", but now be truthful.

You prefer reading books on your iPhone 4 over the iPad?

You prefer surfing the net on your iPhone 4 over the iPad?

You prefer viewing videos on your iPhone 4 over the iPad?

A simple yes or no will suffice.

haha you ask the tough, albeit obvious, questions that no one wants to answer! I would have to guess no on all though...
:p

For me, it doesn't have to be "retina" but a boost in res would be nice. If it has the same res I will not buy.

I think a boost in display quality (brightness, anti-glare, pixels closer to the screen) is more likely.

Resolutions between the current one and 2x in each dimension will have either scaling issues or require developers to target yet another screen res. Doesn't seem worth it.

Changing the screen to a higher resolution would mean ALL the ipad app graphics will be stretched or need to be resampled to fit the higher resolution. Unless they are vector. Most are not. So keep this in mind. Developers would go nuts.

Plus the retna is more practical on the iphone anyway. We are just not ready for "super" high definition yet (SHD). We will see this in the future. Hang in there.

Comparing the similar res between the iP4 and iPad is APPLES to ORANGES...as one is 3.5 inches vs. 9.7. Regarding the GPU gripe, the tech exists to power such a display (processing text/images at 2048x1536 does not take a GTX 580 for heavens sake).

I think you missed the point: there's still a 7x difference between the number of pixels on a retina display iPhone and a retina display iPad. That's a pretty huge number.

Is the world going blind or nuts?

Well let me understand, Apple just released the iPad, now rumors of the iPad2 and even iPad3.
So, without considering that already the iPad is a very fragile heavy notebook without a keyboard or worst a bigger iPhone but it's not a mobilephone and it is absolutely unuseful, for the Love of God why somebody that even like iPad and already have it, should be so idiot to buy the iPad2 on March when iPad3 is coming out in a few months? Why waste money?
Is the whole world going blind?Crazy?IQ is dropping so faster?

Makes sense to wait for iPad 3 in September.

Enjoy the never-ending technology waiting game. In September you'll debate waiting for the iPad 4 the following March. Rinse and repeat.

Me, I'll be enjoying my iPad 1 until the iPad 2 hits, then I'll enjoy the iPad 2 until the iPad 3 hits, then I'll enjoy...

(Fortunately Apple products' ever-excellent resale value makes keeping up with the latest and greatest relatively painless.)

ipad 2 — 2/22/11

was thinking randomly this morning, going along with the whole "2" idea for the ipad 2, this month is the 2nd month of the year, maybe apple will have an event for 2/22/11 this month to announce the ipad 2. it's not totally crazy, though it's probably too early for it, but that day is a tuesday, which is pretty normal. maybe they'll send out invitations next week for it?

at least i think (hope/wish) :/

some reports i've read today point out that at&t is putting a lot of ipad accessories on clearance starting tomorrow. this usually means a new product is coming out soon.

ipad 2, i hope, may come sooner than we thought.

If there is no resolution upgrade iPad 2 will fail, at least the fixed the case so you can put it on a table without wiggling around ...

iPad 1 was a complete new product so everyone wanted to try out. Then you notice ... omg this screen, all those fun apps ... it is just for surfing around, some reading. Its not for serious working with.

I get a feeling that Apple is trying to make a family of iPads just like 13" or 15" or 17" macbook pro's. After all, its a mac for the masses.

I think that Apple is trying to accommodate 2x resolution on iPad Pro (that's what I believe its going to be). It will be priced $99 more than the current version of the iPad with a set of new features which might not make to the iPad series of iPads. I guess this would be a smart move if there are not to piss off iPad 2.0 OR just iPad byers.
(Just like macbook pro's are called macbook pro's every year, Apple might not rename iPad to iPad 2; if they don't I'm more than sure that iPad Pro is in the works).

This is taking into account that iPad 3 is rumoured to be announced in September 2011.
