I'm with you on this...I think people's expectations are way too high way too early. Just because the iPhone 4 has a retina display, does that mean that every device that Apple puts out from now on should be retina? The iPhone has a 3.5" screen and it can be done on that size...but for a 9.7" screen? The cost would be outrageous.

I wouldn't mind a sharper screen but it's far from a deal breaker. I'm really looking for a faster device, especially when it comes to web surfing. The iPad is decent but it's certainly much slower than sufring the web on my desktop.

But is the only way to have a sharper image is to quadruple the graphics? I must admit I am lost on this one  could they not up the resolution and ppi a bit without going all out or is the size of the ipad a deal breaker with bringing up the ppi even if its not Retina levels? :(

Anyone else noticed that

all the 1st Gen iPads have been shunted into the refurb section on the apple store web page. Usually a dead giveaway for an imminent range refresh.

BTW, Retina, schmetina, Toshiba was doing 313ppi on a cellphone back in '07. Revolutionary my arse.

God no HDMI, USB or Retina display what are you thinking apple! I'm out, waiting for iPad 9.

;)

No better resolution. No thanks. I'll save my money for iPad 3. Looking at my iPhone 4 screen and then the current iPad, there's a huge difference in clarity.

the same here, really would love to have iPad, casual browsing at home and stuff but comparing the current one to iPhone 4's screen is what stopped me from buying one. Maybe if they increase resolution only slightly, not to match iPhone 4 but let's say to 1280xwhatever. It would probably make the display look better.

Yup, there will many thousands of people skipping this upgrade. I want better resolution for reading ebooks. Without that, it's just not a worthwhile upgrade.

They should make a new OS for tablets like Google have done. ios on a tablet looks very dated compared to honeycomb.

Depends on one's needs.

I study Japanese and I can tell you that a 1024x768 dipslay renders Kanji (Chinese Characters used in Japanese) pretty awful. Simply ... not ... enough ... pixels.

133dpi is great for Latin alphabets. Yet I'd say the majority of people on this planet do not use the Latin alphabet. And for all those scripts a Retina Display would make a huge difference.

For me a higher res iPad display was the one feature I would have liked. Not having to constantly zoom-in and zoom-out because one can't decipher a Kanji character in the pixel mush.
Or how well does this look on your iPad: 豪徳寺で水曜日の表題? Unless I zoom in a lot, it looks crap on mine...
A lighter and slightly faster iPad? Meh! Won't help at all with Kanji...

Ah well, let's wait another year...

Not a surprise, but for me... no 2048x1536, no sale.

The existing iPad is no better at content consumption than my 13" MBP.

When the screen is sharp enough to make reading easier, I'll buy one.

Then go and buy a competitor Tablet with 2048x1536 resolution...

Oh wait...!

I'm curious - how many people who already own the first one plan to buy the second one?

A tablet seems like the kind of thing that could last a few years and im just wondering how many people plan to buy the second one (doesn't seem like it will have any earth shattering features).

I own one - and I will get the new one in addition. But this is mostly because my family finally saw the value of the iPad and now we keep fighting over it. I would order a second one right away, but that close to the release of the new one I'm going to wait.

So my case is not replace the existing one, but to get an additional one.

Ios looks bad compared to HoneyComb.

good one - you are really funny - got a good laugh out of this.

This is very good news... because I'll have no urge to upgrade to iPad 2. Whew.

Lol I'd have to agree. I don't understand why no retina makes it a complete failure. The screen isnt the eeentire experience. Yes I know the iPhone 4 looks orgasmically awesome. I fell into that trap too and said last summer "the iPad screen looks horrible!!! Not getting one now!". Now that I have an iPad I don't even think about the differences in the clarity because of the rest of the user experience with the iPad. Granted, there will be some cases where the current res is a problem but for all you non-gen 1 owners that are prospecting on the 2, don't jump ship just yet. Let's see what they announce and then you can go play with one to see if the res is something you could overlook. Really i didn't notice how freaking cool this thing was until i got it home and was able to use it in the comfort of my own home.

This is what I'm talking about! Very excited for iPad 2.. Should help me a lot so I don't have to bring my laptop to school anymore! Front-facing camera Is a given, and as long as it's higher res, I don't care if it's actually retina, bc Id be viewing it from further away than my iPhone screen anyways.

Now that WSJ chimed in on iPad 2, how close do you think we until the announcement? Still first week on April?

iOS 4 ***** all over froyo, gingerbread, and honeycomb. Let alone how much iOS 5 is going to **** all over it. Honeycomb still runs droidphone apps so it's not really that different than what Apple did with iOS for iPad, other than making an interface that's completely different for users and flashy, rather than functional (windows vista cough cough). Apple knows what they're doing. And with the introduction of those multitouch gestures for app switching, closing, and app drawer opening, iOS 5 will be that much more superior in functionality and familiarity.

WOW Wall street journal... you are so cool.

State the obvious months after it has become obvious.

The story is that it is in production. That means the release is probably weeks away. The WSJ doesn't dabble in baseless rumor mongering. By the time they report something, it is almost certain.

Yeah I'm not sure what the big deal is about Honeycomb over iOS - they showed widgets, which we already know Android has and iOS doesn't. Other than that, they showed some tablet optimized apps similar to what the iPad already has (nothing new there). And they showed that you can switch between apps with a small screenshot of the app instead of with an icon like iOS does it. Wow. Earthshattering improvement!

I do think the multitouch gestures for navigating around iOS make the experience more fluid and are a nice improvement.

My first generation iPad is fine for my needs right now, so I'll wait for a few generations to be released as I see nothing earth shattering about this one.
