To me it has to have a USB slot or a slot for an SD card. Somewhere to stick a memory card/stick. I don't want to carry another dongle around. Just so I can insert a little 1" card. They have to allow the ability to allow apps acces to documents on the mem card/stick. I hate having to open my MBP open iTunes add document to app and then go use it on an iOS device. Why not the ability to use the document from mem card/stick itself and this way I can go back and forth between iPad and mac easily without using iTunes. (Which I think may see a name change soon or a different app to connect and update devices.)

My first generation iPad is fine for my needs right now, so I'll wait for a few generations to be released as I see nothing earth shattering about this one.

I've been waiting to see what the iPad 2 will offer before buying an iPad at all. As you say, I don't see anything too awfully exciting about iPad 2 if the rumors hold true. I will likely wait for the announcement, which will also involve the inevitable drop in price for iPad 1, and then buy a used iPad 1 relatively cheap. It seems that the "leap" between iPad 1 and iPad 2 will be similar to the leap between iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, which was relatively minimal.

I held off buying the iPad because of the speed and memory issues. A buddy of mine from work complained that it was a bit slow and there was some lag when surfing and switching to different pages. Looks like that will be addressed.

Now that the camera is there, this is perfect so I can Facetime with the family while I work nights. They won't be limited to the small iPhone4 screen now.

A higher resolution screen is a non-issue for me. I won't watch movies on it and it's mainly a tool for surfing for my wife and educational games for the kids. Right now, they use the iPhone 4 for that and while it works, I'm sure my wife will appreciate surfing on a larger screen and the kids will love the educational games and books on the iPad.
FYI, movies look great on the current iPad.

If the resolution of the actual ipad (or the next) is not good enough to read books and documents, how does it compare with the resolution of a dedicated LCD readers like the nook? is it really much lower?

To all those people saying "no retina, no purchase" comments:

Think about this, folks. The iPhone display was 480x320. Doubling in each dimension--4x the total pixels--brought it up 960x480. On the iPad, the resolution is already higher than that: 1024x768. Doubling that in each dimension is a MASSIVE increase in the number of pixels, from 786,432 to 3,145,728. The retina display on the iPhone is only 460,800 pixels.

To go to a retina display on iPad, we're talking almost SEVEN TIMES the pixels of the iPhone 4 display. SEVEN TIMES. On a mobile device. Where you can't just use the hottest GPU available. Where battery life is major concern.

Even a year from now this is going to be pushing it.

It's going to be thinner, lighter and will come with a faster processor!!!

WOW how do they know?? I was sure it would be thicker, heavier and come with a slower processor!!

I just sold my 16GB Wifi only iPad on Craigslist for $400. I figure there is a chance that the current 16GB will vanish or have a $399 price when the iPad 2 is released. I decided to sell now to get top dollar. I have owned the iPad since day one. I paid $530 including taxes. It cost me approximately $13 a month to own over the last 10 months. I will order the iPad 2 as soon as it becomes available. I am hoping the 32GB model will now be $499. I don't think I need the 3g model so I will stick with the Wifi for now.

So what is the point of getting an iPad 2? So it's thinner and a little faster, that's worth spending another $700? And for me at least, the front-facing camera is useless as you have to be on Wi-Fi (unless you jailbreak, but even in that case the networks are crap).

Current iPad resolution is awful for reading text-intensive documents, which is the main reason I had an iPad (I sold it due to the screen being horrible). Will wait for a better screen to buy.

I solved this problem with buying a Kindle 3 from Amazon - the best electronic device for reading texts/eBooks on the market. For everything else, a real notebook is the better tool anyway.

Not really. Comparing the similar res between the iP4 and iPad is APPLES to ORANGES...as one is 3.5 inches vs. 9.7. Regarding the GPU gripe, the tech exists to power such a display (processing text/images at 2048x1536 does not take a GTX 580 for heavens sake). Developers could still code their games to 1024x768, for robust fps, and the crazy dpi of the new screen would make reading/image viewing transcendent. Like ive said before...Apple is totally pulling off a 3GS maneuver...Lame dude, totally lame.

Nope - its APPLES to APPLES ;)

That's the point of view I take too and it's served me very well with iPads, iPhones and MacBooks. It's surprising more people don't analyze their costs this way. IMHO it makes for better buying decisions. I've enjoyed a lot more--and more timely--hardware as a result.

If it's thinner, lighter, and has a front-facing camera-- finally, that would be the product that they should have brought to the market in the first place. Kudos to the early adopters, who validated the market for Apple and third-parties. But in my opinion, what's coming isn't really rev. 2-- it's the completed version of rev.1. Which is exactly what the market needs right now.

All the 1st gen people are trying to play down this announcement because they are in the hole for at least 500 bucks right now on old technology. I don't blame you, but those are the breaks when you buy a 1st gen Apple device.

As for myself I'm getting this 2nd gen device. It's going to be great!

I didn't buy an iPad 1 because I was waiting for my "dream pad":

7" retina display.

I guess that's never gonna happen :(

I waited on the first one to "see what happens" with other tablets but I really don't see anything even coming close for cost/performance/applications.. etc.. I love my HTC Incredible running Android but other than the Samsung Galaxy which although cool still isn't a iPad.

Get real - there's a huge market for used Apple devices. I've never taken much of a financial hit when upgrading - can always sell the old one.

What's the deal with "similar resolution"? It's going to be a waste if it's 20% better or something like that. It'll only cause compatibility issue with no benefit.

Even more so on a second gen Apple device, all the big changes will happen next year, as they always do with Apple. If I can expand, it would be like the difference between an iPhone 3GS compared to an iPhone 4, but you will always be there. A year late.

This seems like it will be a sensible upgrade. It is directed to new buyers. People who have been hearing about the iPad for the last year and are looking for the safe choice in their new shiney. In spite of the many posts from people here ready to upgrade, I don't think this is primarily that kind of update. Apple can coast thru this one. Selling millions to those wanting to get in on the new thing. Deserved or not from the spec standpoint, Apple is still the market leader and this cycle will not change that. You know they are working hard on retina for the iPad and it will be a major step when it happens.

For me, it doesn't have to be "retina" but a boost in res would be nice. If it has the same res I will not buy.
