I was planning on an two-year cycle for iPad purchases, so this is my year to skip since I have owned one since day one. However, if Apple really blew the first iPad out of the water with revision 2 then I would consider making an earlier purchase. A retina-display on its own might have been reason enough, but I am still going to wait and see what Apple does. It would be nice to have more than one iPad in the family.

The last time Apple did a CPU/RAM bump on an iOS device they crippled all older devices (iPhone 3g, iPod Touch 2g, etc). I wouldnt mind so much, but Apple were still selling the 2g as new up until the end of September!

This means iOS5 will be even more bloated - its getting like iTunes! :(

For me (read that again if you are a troll - for ME, so I cant be wrong) the new iPad is going to be a pretty major fail. They will redesign the back to make it look new and 'magical' and boast about statistics of how faster it is, even though on iOS4.x it doesn't NEED to be any faster. the performance to power usage ratio is perfectly fine, but they will still bump the specs simply because thats all they can do. Camera is a pointless addon (I'm not willing to be the prat walking around using an iPad as a camera, and if you do this you are a seriously sad, sad person).

yea im sure the Wall Street Journal has a "source". that source is probably someones son that surfs the internet that knows what the current rumor is. source, please. you only wish you had a "source" Wall Street Journal

It's funny, but I don't remember hearing many complaints about the iPad screen before the iPhone 4 was released.

How come it's suddenly become so rubbish? :)

Feels like the iPhone all over again. I bought an original iPhone on iDay. The 3G didn't wow me, so I held off until the 3GS. Then again, I bought an iPhone 4 a year later.

I've had my iPad since day one. I might sit out the first revision, again, and wait for 2012 to upgrade.

Hard call at this point. My heart says buy and my brain says wait.

Haha, you are the exact opposite of me! :D

I held out on the first-gen iPhone, then got 3G in 2008. Got an iPhone 4 last August. I sat out on the first-gen iPad but will probably get the second-gen! :)

I feel like, unintentionally, I've had good timing so far. Obviously, the 3G added 3G, GPS, and cheaper price. 3GS was not a huge upgrade. Then, I'm eligible for an upgrade just in time for the iPhone 4, which is a big design/spec change! Likewise, the first iPad is excellent but HOPEFULLY the second-gen will be worth my wait and I'll pick one of those up instead. :)

No surprises with the specs.
The REAL news is the fact the WSJ is reporting it, and from past experiences, lets hope that we'll be getting an announcement real soon!!! :D

That's extremely judgmental. Why does using an iPad as a camera make you a "seriously sad person"?

This is my question, too. Is it that bad? I don't have an iPad. When I've used one (friends/store) the screen seemed fine to me. Extra mem and thinner/lighter are the winners for me (plus not having a iPad). Day one!

Thinner...lighter...dont drop it.

So the better processor opens up my apps a split second faster.

More memory...OK..not bad

Same display...nothing about it being better for outside use.

Front camera...no biggie.

No reason to upgrade.

Thinner...lighter...I thought rev 1 was too heavy

Faster processor...I felt the processor on rev1 was sluggish

More memory...only 256mb was a deal breaker for me

Same display...no biggie

Front camera...should have been on rev 1

Glad I waited for iPad 2. :)

Double or nothing

There are only two ways Apple is going to increase dots per inch on the iPad, either shrink the screen physically, or exactly double it. Doing anything else would create a third iOS screen size, something developers have not been prepared for. I don't see either thing happening.

The story is believable, faster, thinner, front camera and none on the rear.

Higher Res would have been great, but as long as all the other things are true (more RAM, better CPU/GPU), i'll still be buying one! :)

MY iPad 2 predictions are that it will be
  • Thinner
  • Lighter
  • Faster/More RAM/Faster Processer
  • Front and rear facing cameras
  • MAYBE Retina display, but probably not
  • Better speaker
  • come with 4.3

Regarding performance:
-Apple will never DECREASE battery performance generation-to-generation, so don't worry
-a BIT more performance would be good. Apparently iOS is implementing fast app swapping throug the 4-finger swipe, which is switching full-screen apps in like 1/4 second.
-Who knows what iOS 5 will bring? Hopefully better notifications, tablet-optimized home screen a la Honeycomb, etc. that will need more performance?

Regarding the camera:
-No, the iPad does not make a good point-and-shoot at the dinner party. But what it IS good for:
-showing someone on FaceTime what you're looking at
-Augment Reality apps like Yelp
-Medical applications
-Cataloging images for inventory, law enforcement, etc.

So there are legitimate reasons for a performance upgrade and addition of a camera...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; sv-se) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I did not get the iPad 1 because of the late launch here in Sweden so I'll got this one for sure.

wooow, what a news.
Is there anyone on earth who think, they are producing a new ipad that is thicker, much heavier, with a slower processor and with less powerful graphics proecessor?
No, but they could have done the same thing as with the iPhone 3GS, kept the form factor (and weight) pretty much the same, just swapping in faster processors.
I think if there is one criticism of the iPad that has some weight, it is that it is a bit too heavy for one-handed use without resting the iPad on something.

Lighter, thinner, faster >> Retina display
(also more RAM would be nice).

I'd say lighter and thinner is not so important for a device of this size. It's not going to be as mobile as 7" tablets anyways. It will require some kind of support to use (lighter or not). And it will get more RAM. These days, 256MB is an embarrassment. The question is - will it get 1GB (like XOOM)?
