No rear camera? Those cases all had holes for it.

Not a surprise, but for me... no 2048x1536, no sale.

I'm there with you. When they jump up the display--I buy.
Everything else sounds excellent, though.

It's only a matter of time before this thing becomes the darling portable.

It's not going to be as mobile as 7" tablets anyways.
If you can't handle the portability of an iPad, you should just give up on life.

iPad 2

look guys, i will buy the ipad 2.. i dont care if it has the freaking retina display, i wait a whole year because i think ipad 1 is ****.. so i am buying this thing, and then sell it in a year and ill buy the ipad 3 and so on..

Because its painful

Puhlease. Heaven forbid you ever have a kidney stone. Or worse: use an ATM.

I drove a Lexus for the first time last week. Yet I'm still perfectly capable of driving my little Hyundai.

The precious diva-ism about screen resolution and pixel-density is just ridiculous. Virtually every single other display anywhere in the world ever, back through the millennia before, is not like the iPhone 4, yet you get along just fine. Reminds me of the pretentious girl I knew who claimed she could only eat Belgian chocolate.

4:3 or 9:6?

do you think ipad 2 will keep the 4:3 ratio, or go 9:6 (iphone, ipod touch) or even 16:9 (cinema display)? i would like to see 9:6...

I'm pretty happy with my iPad. I've never had it crash or slow down yet. I can't same the same for my iPhone 3G though ;)

Amen. With the new OS, my iPhone 3G has gotten really slow, many apps keep crashing and the google maps GPS is about useless. Half the time it will not even update to show me where I am, and it locks up.

My rev 1 iPad works great - and with twice as many apps loaded. About the only thing I would want on it - is the camera for facetime (although not a reason enough to buy a new one). And mine is a wifi only model.

Seriously thinking of maybe not getting another iphone; and just going with a regular phone and a mifi. My contract is up in April. So come July, the iphone 5 better be killer or iphone 4 marked really down in order for me to consider another one. I know my wife does not want another one. She only wants something for email and texting. oh and for facebook

The last time Apple did a CPU/RAM bump on an iOS device they crippled all older devices (iPhone 3g, iPod Touch 2g, etc). I wouldnt mind so much, but Apple were still selling the 2g as new up until the end of September!

This means iOS5 will be even more bloated - its getting like iTunes! :(

For me (read that again if you are a troll - for ME, so I cant be wrong) the new iPad is going to be a pretty major fail. They will redesign the back to make it look new and 'magical' and boast about statistics of how faster it is, even though on iOS4.x it doesn't NEED to be any faster. the performance to power usage ratio is perfectly fine, but they will still bump the specs simply because thats all they can do. Camera is a pointless addon (I'm not willing to be the prat walking around using an iPad as a camera, and if you do this you are a seriously sad, sad person).

Flame away...

I don't have an iPad yet, but I plan to buy one so any revision big, or small, I'm still going to get the iPad. (Sorry if the sentence sounded weird;))

yea im sure the Wall Street Journal has a "source". that source is probably someones son that surfs the internet that knows what the current rumor is. source, please. you only wish you had a "source" Wall Street Journal

Actually, I think the source for the WSJ is Apple Inc. They have an uncanny reputation for being correct when it comes to Apple. And this is the WSJ we are talking about here. With their reputation, they have to go on more than just rumor and speculation which is why some, myself inlcuded, believe that they are the organization Apple goes to when it wants information published.

MY iPad 2 predictions are that it will be
  • Thinner
  • Lighter
  • Faster/More RAM/Faster Processer
  • Front and rear facing cameras
  • MAYBE Retina display, but probably not
  • Better speaker
  • come with 4.3

LOL i think this is everyones "predictions".....

do you think ipad 2 will keep the 4:3 ratio, or go 9:6 (iphone, ipod touch) or even 16:9 (cinema display)? i would like to see 9:6...

I think the 4:3 form has worked very well. A wider aspect ratio might make it a bit useless in the portrait orientation.

Because its painful going from my iPhone 4's beautiful display to my iPad's. It's like going from a high quality print to a screen. All I see are pixels. I never had this problem before the iPhone 4, but now I'm spoiled. That is all.

This is true for me as well. The iPhone4 display is a revelation even in comparison with the iPhone3. And the resolution of the iPad display, nice as it is, is lower still. 2048x1536 would simply make everything look better, and anything text related a whole lot so. It's an obvious added value.
I don't understand why people seem to think that a higher resolution display would mean greatly increased cost, the cost of LCD display manufacture is largely independent of resolution. The costs for a device like the iPad would mostly be associated with beefing up the system, CPU/graphics/memory size/memory bandwidth, sufficiently that the user experience doesn't suffer from unsatisfactory responsiveness.

If the high resolution display isn't there, I'll simply sit on my money until it is, for me and my elderly parents both. (They would use it almost exclusively for reading.)

Expected, but still a bummer. No retina display = no iPad for me. After using an iPhone 4 for about half a year, I can't look at the iPad's pixelated screen!

Current iPad resolution is awful for reading text-intensive documents, which is the main reason I had an iPad (I sold it due to the screen being horrible). Will wait for a better screen to buy.

While I feel those words are too strong, after getting my iPhone 4 the iPad doesn't look nearly as good. I sold mine because I couldn't justify it since the iPhone 4 is basically a mini iPad but better in certain respects, but it is tough to read small print, but the iPhone 4 has made everything else look worse unfortunately.

It's just unfortunate that a screen with double the resolution as people have been discussing would eat up a ton of power, I would assume anyway because of being more graphically intensive.

The iPad needs a more powerful graphics processor just to run 1024x768 properly (something it should have had from the beginning, so basically this is a catch-up). Anything significantly higher-res will need a much, much more powerful graphics processor, which doesn't exist yet for this form-factor as far as I know.

I hope its a minor rev. I just got an iPad for Christmas and I don't need a new super duper model coming out this soon. :D

Im bummed about it not having a higher res display, but oh well. I can do with that, but that weak of a camera? idk why it cant have the iPhone 4's camera. Is the current iPad thicker than the iPhone 4? The next iPad doesn't need to be paper thin as the iPod touch. I'm still excited to see what it will be like.

+1

how hard is it to release this for t-mobile?
come on apple this is starting to get very old!

Not hard at all...

AT&T probably paid Apple many millions of dollars to keep it off of T-Mobile.

So all you might have to do is to out-bid AT&T, and offer Apple several million dollars above whatever the AT&T exclusivity contract buy-out amount is.

When are you going to cough up the dough please?

All the negatives due to "No Retina" are seriously puzzling me. I mean, the display is equivalent to the best computer displays that Apple sells -- just about the ppi of the 11" MBA with the hi-resolution display.

Sure, there might be a difference going from iPhone 4 to iPad, but there will be a difference going from iPhone 4 to any other computer! Are you seriously not buying an iMac or MBP because the resolution isn't "Retina"?

I just can't wait for the "Apple is hosting an event on [insert date here]" rumours. Although speculating is fun, it would be nice to have some solid facts about the release date.

Exactly - this is the rumor I am waiting for (and of course the pre-order day ... I will get up as early as required to pre-order the minute the webpage is up for preorder)

This rumor didn't even add anything new or unexpected to the rumor soup ... it is basically summarizing the realistic, too be expected upgrades.

This is my question, too. Is it that bad? I don't have an iPad. When I've used one (friends/store) the screen seemed fine to me. Extra mem and thinner/lighter are the winners for me (plus not having a iPad). Day one!

Rob

It's good but not mind-blowingly good like the iPhone 4. When you're talking about a device that is 99% display, resolution is important. I think that an increased resolution (not necessarily Retina) would be beneficial for reading on the iPad, which you do a lot on compared to the iPhone. Photos also look ridiculously good on the iPhone 4, and photos is one of the major uses of the iPad!

But, I understand if there are technical limitations...Perhaps Apple does not want to jar developers with too many changes for a platform that is only 1 year old.

I think the iPad will get a faster processor too. Also, there just might be a camera in it as well. Don't quote me on it though.

I'm confused...what does "similar resolution" mean?

Similar =/= identical.

Are they suggesting we'll seen an increase in resolution with the iPad 2, but not a "Retina" display? Interesting.

You are placing too much faith in the English language (or at least the use of it).
