guys (and gals) the op is just saying (although he did muck it up at the beginning in explaining it) that in certain viewing angles the new ipad actually appears fatter and thicker, and it does, he is right. I too am not that much of a fan of the shape, I d rather they made it thicker and kept the (lovely looking) curve, or that they made it completely flat a la iphone, or maybe that they even tried some wedgy looking design like the air. But I am sure when I hold it I ll appreciate the size and weight difference.

That's fine but from what I can see he went further and tried to spin it as "brilliant marketing" I'm not even sure what he was trying to do here. So it looks thicker from the angle and the new thinness somehow doesn't matter because it's all marketing even though it's actually thinner because it looks thinner only from the front?

It's a visual illusion and a damn good one, that coupled with equally brilliant marketing, has everyone giddy over it. In reality it'll actually look thicker.

I know its a little early for "Worst Thread of The Year" award, but I definitely nominate this one.

Why is everyone so excited about the iPad 2 being 8.8 mm? I mean, other than the surprising fact that it's just a little thinner than an iPhone 4, in real world use, it will LOOK thicker than the original iPad.

If you look at the picture, you can see that the entire width of the 2 is thicker than the sides of original iPad, which because of the heavily-tapered back is technically all that you see when someone is using it in the real world.

So by your logic, the three ring binder I carried in school was maybe a quarter of an inch thick because I don't measure the thickest part? I always wondered why I didn't carry 10 of those things in my backpack.

Now I am confused...

Is it lighter too? Or is that an scaloptical illusion? If so, I would like the scale they use so I can tell everyone I lost weight but I am still thicker around the middle.

Basically you're arguing one visual illusion (seen from the back) is more important than another (seen from the front) while tip toeing around the fact that it is in fact significantly thinner physically. And you wrote something contradicting as the thread title. That's not "semantics," that's just confusing the readers of this thread.

Besides, we're arguing about the look of the iPad's back when others look like this? The new iPad makes all competitors look dated.

From the front, you can't even see how thin/thick it is. We're talking about from the back and sides. I never "tip toed" around the fact that it is physically thinner. That part is true. You can't argue with that fact.

I've been talking about how it looks during use. And let's not even mention the competition. However the iPad looks, it'll always look better than their offerings.

The flat back on the iPad 2 isn't flattering.

I'm definitely not a huge fan of it either. It's the exact same form factor of the new iPod touch and when that came out, I remember noticing right away how even though it looked thinner lying on a table, in your hands, it felt even thicker.

It may sound weird, but watching some of the hands-on videos (long before this thread), I also thought iPad 2 looked kinda thicker, and at the same time, the other half of my brain contradicted with actual numbers, which means thinner. So I see where the OP's coming from.

:)

So Apple with all of their marketing "nouse" have employed a factual claim that the iPad 2 is physically 1/3 thinner than the iPad 1. I think they've got every reason to market the hell out of this fact!

  1. It's thinner than the old model
  2. They've managed to pack all of this tech into a very thin package
  3. It's thinner than most of their current competition
  4. It's going to feel less unwieldy to its users

You - contrarily - are obsessing over the fact that it looks thicker. You may have a point but you've got your visual illusions reversed - it IS thinner - but looks thicker...

Hey dude, i love how you can something before using/seeing/holding the device for yourself. Just great.

hahah this thread is retarted. Just like some other people have already said, the iPad 2 is thinner and it looks thinner as well. That's what a taper does. This is what you'll actually see from both when looking at them from any natural viewing angle. It's the same type of taper as on the MBA.

It's not thinner ... it's ... it is MAGICAL!

They do have every right to market it is 1/3 thinner because it is. I'm just saying the thickness is a little misleading. Whether or not it was intentional is another point of debate.

Most people won't notice this though. They'll only be fixated on the 33% number.

How have I got them reversed? That's what I've been saying all along, that is thinner, but looks thicker.

But it does look thinner too.

You've got it reversed because you're saying they're marketing a "damn good visual illusion" and that "everyone is giddy over it". The visual illusion (which you yourself acknowledge) is that it looks thicker (which it isn't) not the reverse.

If you had titled your post "Is it just me or does the iPad 2 look thicker than before?" - or something of that nature - nobody would be taking the p1ss.

I totally understand that the OP is talking about, but the new iPad does not look thicker at all.

So you don't understand what the OP is talking about. Don't worry though, I don't think he/she does either.

This is right.

I didn't mind the design of the iPad 1 and maybe would've liked it more if the iPad 2 had the same design but with an extra 3 hours of battery life.
