Day 1 adopters only turn up because they enjoy high fiving the Apple minions.

Two things disappoint me about this iPad; the ram and the camera. I hope things turn out differently, but if it's a case of Apple Inc TELLING me what I need, and more importantly, what I should want, then I'll pass. I can wait 12/24/36 months.

Not sure about a "day 1 purchase" for anything, but a Retina display and front-facing camera will sell this easy. High resolution displays are some of the greatest breakthroughs in technology, I think, especially in mobile devices like an iPhone.

This is alot more of a realistic prediction for the new iPad. The iPad having a screen resolution of a high end computer monitor was a little far fetched for now.

:D:p I like that. and hey real books don't crash. They may not be portable (if you need more than one), but they work in a power failure; don't rely on batteries; and you don't get questions or stopped for them at airport security.

The problem is not faster search algorithms. to me the problem is better ones. Ones that recognize handwriting as well as typed text, you have a choice or not on matching case. The other problem with electronic books (and I know I/T professionals who don't back up). One hard drive crash or scratched CD/DVD and you lost 100's of books.

One good house fire and you can be out of 100's of books --- and you don't even have the option of being able to make backup copies with the brain dead simplicity that you can with electronic versions.

Dammit! Will one of you people please let us in on what SPECIFICALLY a Mac CAN NOT DO that a windows machine can??(Bluray aside,I get that)Otherwise you are just whining over nothing. The way you are talking Windows boxes just blow macs away.Put up or ****.And remember, whatever you come up with has to be consistent with calling Macs "toys"and not "real" computers, nut just a lag of a few months in getting some newest chipset.

Windows in the business world can do a lot things that mac struggles with .. but I don't think that is point here. People, me included, feel that Apple is putting way to many ressources into iOS and the according hardware, resources that are missing in the regular computer business.
Apples hardware has always been lagging behind Windows, but it has gotten worse, especially in the professional grade hardware. The servers are done and the MacPro is super expensive compared to the similarly spec machines. MBP's are due for an update as well.
Worse though, the OSX development seems stagnating entirely, with the exception of successful ideas from iOS that are being brought into OSX (hence iToys from here on). Even worse than that. Professional software like Final Cut has basically been abandoned.

Bottomline, that can easily be perceived as a shift of attention toward the iOS/iToys. It is not quite clear to me why Apple isn't using some of that massive cash reserve it has to bolster both sides a little better.

I'm curious, can anyone offer me a reason as to why the iPad, or any other tablet for that matter, required a dual-core processor?

They aren't for processor intensive use, what's the point, apart from checking a box, with tech fans like myself?

folks I don't think we'll see an iPad this February. I got an eMail by Apple recommending me to buy an iPad for Valentines. Apple would not dare to present a new iPad one day after Valentines...

Maybe they'll be ready by April-June with Retina, SD-Card and all our wishes. They need more time for massive Retina-production... Remember the last iPad just shipped in April.

I reckon Apple will present new MacBooks (they're really overdue) now and a new iPad a few months later...

this is the same company that released the original 8GB iphone for $599 and then dropped the price 2 months later to $399.

i don't know if it will be released in feb, as their usual product refresh on the iphone has been 1 year... so im assuming april.

As I said, current owners can wait till iPad 3. We'll get a combo of iPad 2's minor improvements and a severe memory/data storage hike.

No retina display for iPad 2 folks. You're all expecting too much. :D

Oh it better have dual cores. If not then there's something wrong with steve jobs other then his HIV/Cancer.

Everyone else such as Android, Windows phones and tablets are up to date when it comes to dual cores.

If you are going to have a dig at someone, have the common decency to get the disease correct. ignoranus.

There's exactly 1 phone due to ship in the next few weeks, the LG Optimus 2.
Everything else is vapour or prototype, i'm sure if you could have unfettered access to Apple's labs your head would be spinning.

Back under your bridge troll. :(

The existing iPad's pixel density is an embarrassment compared with the iPhone 4 and the latest crop of Android smart phones. There are going to be A LOT of Android tablets hitting the market this year, most notably the Motorola Xoom. While the Xoom and others will have similar resolutions to the iPad 2, Apple only updates that thing once each year. Do they they think they will retain a competitive advantage using the same pixel density from last year to carry them through all of this year? Don't they realize that they are just exposing themselves to an onslaught of marketing criticism from competitors?

It's funny that Apple raised the bar for pixel density last year but can't come even close to that bar with the iPad 2. I'm hoping for a surprise announcement. Look, thinner isn't always better. The current iPad feels just fine, so let's improve the specifications instead of making everything so small and thin that it falls out of your hand and breaks into a million pieces.

The Xoom and Playbook will kill the iPad as productivity devices, especially for business and IT people. Look at the UIs on those other tablets. They are designed for productivity and show you appointments, incoming messages, emails, etc. right on the home screen as it should be. Not a hundred cute, candy-like gummy icons that tell you nothing about your day.

Apple really needs to step up its game. They are the 800 lb gorilla right now, but the amount of competition that's coming is staggering. How will Apple survive the competition unless it speeds up its product cycles or out-specs everyone on day one?
This is exactly the point. Apple's introduction of "Retina" set the standard for the industry, and Apple only needs to measure up to its own standard. "It just works" makes sense when the iPad 2 works like the iPhone 4, released Summer 2010, and the iPhone 5, to be released Summer 2011. The display is what matters first and foremost--people won't care that it's slightly less than 300 ppi, vs. slightly higher than 300 ppi on the iPhone; it will look magical, and the experience of holding that quality display in your hands will be akin to the magical feeling described in the first iPad informational/promotional Apple bits.

iPad as primary computer

At the moment the iPad needs to be connected to another computer with iTunes for the full experience.

I hope soon this is no longer the case and an iPad can be sold as a stand alone machine rather than an excessary.

My question also. I have not dropped my IP.1v yet, but.......

1. It is not confirmed that the glass will be thinner; it is rumored that the device will be thinner.
2. "Thin" is a measurement of thickness, not durability or toughness.
3. If you want a portable computing device that you can drop, buy a Toughbook.

Apple wants this too. You may have heard of the grand datacenter in North Carolina. iTunes as a cloud service is not too far away.

Back camera: Scanner+

Front camera: faceTime+

That's it.

Actually, the one question raised by the low resolution back camera rumors is how well it might work for the (very useful) scanning function.

For some folks, such as myself, the back camera is what would actually make FaceTime useful - being able to show someone else what I'm seeing. I just don't care as much about the front facing camera ... as do apparently pretty much all of the mobile device designers - anyone notice the better cameras seem to be stuck on the back?

The only valid point I've ever seen for not putting a rear facing camera on the iPad is that is that many security sensitive places don't allow cameras on site. Why don't they allow cameras? Perhaps because cameras are such a powerful tool for quickly capturing a huge amount of valuable information?
Some people would like to be able to easily integrate this power into the productivity capabilities of the iPad that are made possible by it's larger display (iWork, etc...)

I'd be willing to bet that the rear camera will probably be the key feature that Apple will use to market the iPad this year. The rear camera will open up the world of AR to the iPad, and the extra processing power that is rumored here will be able to power some pretty impressive AR effects. AR will be a totally new experience for most people --- effectively 'magic', which fits pretty well into how Apple originally started promoting the iPad.

That's it.

Back camera needs Autofocus to serve well as scanner. Back camera on the iTouch does not have Autofocus, so it will not work well with GoogleEyes and similar applications.

I must have dreamt up the two alerts of appointments in my calendar, the dozen or so audio and counter alerts on my candy icons.

Just cos android's notifications are a bit more elegant right now, the one thing you're not going to get rumours from some analyst or supplier is. iOS 5.0

Keep your whinging to yourself til Mid march.

The crappy part about this is:
1. 1GB RAM is only a couple dollars more
2. iPhone 5 will be released a few months later, WITH 1GB RAM

A better processor is part of it, but it also needs more RAM in order to work with more data at once. To use games as an example, more RAM could accomodate bigger levels, or higher-resolution textures. I'm actually sort of disappointed if they're only going to give the iPad 2 a perfunctory bump to 512 MB. I would say that's hardly forward-thinking, but of course "forward-thinking" to them means giving us a reason to buy an iPad 3.

+1

Once iTunes sync is in the cloud and all your purchases are available to retrieve, then iDevices will properly stand apart.

I think this makes more sense. The most reasonable complaints about the ipad are related to how poorly it handles fingerprints and glare/outside reading. There are very few sensible complaints about the ipad's screen resolution. I would applaud more power and the addition of cameras front/back too but would love for Apple to rebuild the ipad to be more holder friendly. I love how nice holding my Sonos controller feels as it has a hard rubber back. When I place it down, it doesn't slide and it is much more comfortable feeling on my lap (albeit smaller but I am speaking about the material feel).

I disagree... I think it's:

But hey, so far Apple products have worked perfectly for me.

Will buy iPad 2 on the first day of sale. The wife and I share one right now and it was always our plan to delay our second purchase until iPad 2 came out. And, I, being the tech person in the family, she insists I get to own the new one.

However, I can see us trading up every year from now on, with the oldest tablet being sold on the cheap or given away.
