The new design isn't that great.

The speed is irrelevant since no one will put out an app that won't run on the original iPad at least for a long time, (most apps aren't even designed for retina display yet) and there's no speed issues with the current iPad.

I've used facetime maybe 3 times total on my iPhone 4, it's a gimmick.

I've never used iMovie on my iPhone and I bought it on day 1.

I've got a MacBook for GarageBand.

No reason for my to buy one, which sucks because I'm desperate to spend 400 quid on a tablet. Guess I'll have to wait another year.

Because they know people will buy it anyways. If they re-released the current iPad, people would still rush to the store to buy it.

I guess it means those specs are irrelevant and don't suit consumer's needs at an appropriate price, then. I agree.

Not to mention the iPad 2 will likely to have the fastest CPU and the GPU combination as well as the display of the best quality.

I think many are missing the point. The iPad 2 does have some nice features but Apple does the 'slight' upgrades to get you excited about the new one only to do it again 6 months to a year later just after you finished paying for the one you just purchased... ingenious!

how do you use 6 to 12 months to pay for something

See that's the thing. Can't give you too much so the iPad 3 will have better display, 1gb ram, 2.0 dual core, etc. better cameras. Got to keep people buying the newest product and not skipping an year.

If it had what you're suggesting, it would cost consumers $2000+

Considering the new design (thinner/lighter), the new processor, new graphics, two new cameras, gyro, upgraded RAM....all at the same price...what did you expect? I for one am surprised at how much was actually included. I only expected a CPU bump and a front facing camera.

For those unable to see the quality improvements, go find a similar spec'd tablet for the same price.

Love it. With it being thinner I hope it fits on my ipad keyboard dock I love so much.

1. Its good that you know there wont be any specific ipad 2 apps for a while.
Like there wasnt any iphone 4 apps for a while after launch? oh wait there was.

2. iMovie is more a desktop replacement then the iphone version
3. Same with garageband.

Just because you dont use stuff, doesnt make it ****, but if you enjoy your macbook dont buy, its not for everyone, allthough as steve said, pcs are trucks.

Utter hogwash. While Apple is indeed the master of the constant upgrade path your assertion that this is a minor upgrade is absolutely absurd. A "minor" upgrade is the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS. This upgrade is far more akin to the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4. Practically every aspect of the device has been upgraded except for the screen. This is anything but a "slight" upgrade.

Uh...what?

You don't use software that takes advantage of the iPad 2. The iPad 1 is plenty fast for your needs.

But an even faster iPad 3 is what you're waiting for?

Why?

A "minor" upgrade is the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS.

You've listed the wrong models. The original iPhone to the 3G was a minor upgrade. The 3G to 3GS changed far, far more things.

Quote your source for more RAM? None was mentioned, nor is there any indication of it on the new Apple iPad spec page.

Give it time, you'll see I'm right. THere's no way with garage band they are sticking to 256. More ram is a given, if you dispute that you are just trying to be argumentative.

To the people 'paying it off' - stop using credit cards :)

To the people saying more speed is irrelevant - No, it's not. A good many of us don't give a sh(& about games and whatnot, but want faster internet.. particularly those accessing photography stuff.

@che - my bad.. hdmi support indeed!

Interesting reaction:

- Android tablets double the number of core with a drastically faster GPU and more RAM, lighter and thinner casing === OMG, Apple is doomed! The dual core (quad core, hex core, etc) Android tablet is so much better!

- Apple tablet doubles the number of core with a drastically faster GPU and more RAM, lighter and thinner casing === It's only a slight upgrade! They are just baiting us to buy the new one.

Well said mate, during the press conference when i saw the dual core, much faster graphics, two cameras, sensors, lighter, thinner i thought the price would come up. i mean, look at android tablets. but no it stayed the same, and blows any tablet out of the water, for the price/specc.

The new design isn't that great.

I love how people make statements like this when they 1) haven't held the device in their hands or even seen anything but a few photos of it and 2) seem to think that their opinion is objective fact.

Sorry, but your opinion is NOT objective fact.

You're underestimating this update. It's much more than people were expecting.

Apple won't update the iPad for another year again.

"This year we haven't done **** and just re-releasing the overpriced crap that we had last year. Don't let the significant improvements to weight, thickness, and technical specs fool you -- it's more of the same. And if even if our competitors are now behind, they are still better than us. If you see an Apple employee give them a kick in the ass for not having done squat this year. We suck. Please buy one to justify my $1 salary. Thank you."

Chill out, it's just my opinion and I've seen enough photos to know that the design isn't that great.

People complain about iPad pricing...? Really? Tell that to Xoom and galaxy Tab.

What does it even matter if it has iOS5 or not? iOS upgrades are free.

It matters a HUGE amount to me. Whether they are free or not isn't the important part, it's that in my case the deciding factor to stay with an ipad or start looking elsewhere was based much more on the software than the hardware. Once again these are just my personal needs in a tablet device. Even though it's not the point at all, iOS upgrades aren't free, they are just included in the cost of my ipad/iphone.

I know it sounds kind of stupid but the jump from the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4 in terms of the retina display was the biggest feature apart from design when upgrading. I wanted the same from the iPad 2, that's all.
